dilla-dj-set

This is a link to a live mix by the man known as DJ Concept, and he did this set live in NYC. This is a great collection of music from my idol and favorite artist J Dilla. This mix covers everything from the Pharcyde/Tribe Called Quest days all the way up to Ruff Draft and everything that was in between. J Dilla was an absolute genius,  and the impact that this man and his music have had on my life is remarkable.

If you are unfamiliar with Dilla please take a listen to this mix because it really is a great collection of tracks that Dilla was featured on and produced. At just under an hour long this mix will not disappoint.

Sunday Metal Song: Helmet, “In the Meantime”

Posted in Sunday Metalhead Minute with tags on Monday, January 5, 2009 by Ryan Buege

If you haven’t noticed from the lack of posting on the site lately, everyone at mind inversion seems to be enjoying their winter break far too much right now. Things should be picking up again here shortly; I’ll be covering several awesome metal shows in the area over the next few months featuring Meshuggah, Krisiun, Kreator, Exodus, and many more. In the meantime (pun intended), I’m here to satisfy your Sunday Metal Stoner craving with some riff-heavy rocking straight from the fretboard of Page Hamilton.

These are breaks. Break it up BREAK it up BREAK IT UP!

Hello again boys and girls, it’s that time of the month again (no…not that time) for a nice little playlist to get you through these treacherous winter months here in the midwest. There’s no real flow to this thing, so it’s not a playlist as much as it is just tracks together in one spot that I’ve had on repeat lately. I suggest them all, of course, so if you’re bored or just looking for some new material to get into give these a peek. Hope you all enjoy! xoxo Erik

The Black Keys – “The Lengths”

Kurtis Blow – “The Breaks”

El Guincho – “Antillas”

Hercules and Love Affair – “Raise Me Up”

The Arcade Fire – “Cold Wind”

Evidence – “For Whom The Bell Tolls”

P.O.S. – “Goodbye”

The Scanners – “Lowlife (LA Riots Remix)”

What can I say about Tony Starks (AKA Ghostface Killah)? The guy has it all, he’s one of the greatest rappers in the history of the game, he is part of one of the most highly influential collectives in Hip-Hop history and now he has his own doll. Rhettmatic was nice enough to release this mix entitled 36 Deadly Darts: The Ghostface Doll Mix CD which has some of the classics that you have come to love by Ghost. These mix tapes were originally sold on the road with Rhettmatic (with an initial press of 1,000) and now they are being given away with the purchase of the Ghost doll.

You can go over to 4CAST Limited and buy the doll for a mere $299.99. Many of you may be thinking, “Why the fuck would I pay three hundred dollars for a doll?” It’s because this doll is made with the finest quality materials. Ghost’s chain and wristband are made out of pure 14kt gold. They truly saved the best for last, this doll has a built in voice unit that has Ghost himself delivering classic lines. The voice byte titles: “I put it in em shot up in em deadly venom”, “Ghostface, ghostface”, “Remember when i longed dicked you and broke your ovary”, “Yo bitch i fucked your friend ya you stank ho”. This promises to be a must have for any die hard Wu-Tang or Ghostface Killah fan.

Video: Elzhi & Black Milk Live @ Red Bull Big Tune in Seattle

Posted in Video with tags , , , , , , on Tuesday, December 30, 2008 by Tim Althaus

This is a video of two of the illest on the planet right now. These guys are tearing up the entire game and putting the “D” back on the map. Take a close watch as Black Milk & Elzhi go through some of their hits. Both of these guys can absolutely tear apart the show and the mic. I can honestly say that if I could see any show in the world right now, this would be the show. Make sure you stay tuned to the Elzhi set because he performs part of one of my favorite songs (“Hiding Place“) by Little Brother. Please go out and get Tronic by Black Milk and The Preface by Elzhi if you haven’t, they are two of the sickest albums of this year, and of course they are from the “D”.

Peter Gabriel & Hot Chip, “Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa” (Vampire Weekend Cover)

For those of you that don’t know legendary singer/songwriter Peter Gabriel covered the Vampire Weekend song “Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa” with indie dance kings Hot Chip. The cover of this song in my opinion is amazing. Peter Gabriel is one of those singers that you can’t help but like no matter what he is doing. Hot Chip also provides a great back drop for this track. This is an absolutely magical cover of one of the best songs of this year. Listen to this track, you won’t regret it!

Today, we at Mind Inversion are pleased to introduce a recurring feature (as often as submissions allow) where we spotlight an amazing underground visual artist that contributes to our library. We will begin this exposé with an incredible, intricate collection of drawings from local Minneapolis, MN abstract graphic artist Ben Berning. The pieces in this exhibit are primarily in ink or marker and on paper. Click on a photo or hit read more to keep viewing the entire gallery.

Sunday Metal Song: Municipal Waste – “Mind Eraser”

Municipal Waste - Mind Eraser

Surprisingly, I have remembered to keep the “Sunday Metal Stoner” song of the week column going this Sunday – it looks like I am actually going to follow through and make this column a  weekly staple. To continue the tradition, this week I’m blazing to one of my favorite tracks from the neothrash party brigade known commonly as Municipal Waste. Few tracks can beautifully sum up the brutalizing effects of a weekend of partying like “Mind Eraser”…

Video: Royce Da 5’9″ “Shake This”

Posted in Video with tags , , , , , , on Friday, December 19, 2008 by Tim Althaus

Vodpod videos no longer available.
It’s almost as if we haven’t heard a great deal of magnificent music from the city of Detroit this year. Royce Da 5’9″ dropped this video for the lead single off of his soon to come masterpiece Street Hop. If you watch the video closely you will also notice that DJ Premier makes a couple of cameos in this video, well that’s because he executive produced the whole Royce album. If you aren’t familiar with Royce you need to get acclimated with him because you are truly missing out on something special. I can honestly say that this may be one of my most anticipated albums for next year,  next to the Elzhi & Royce Da 5’9″ album (that’s right they are doing an entire album together) and Guilty Simpson & Sean Price album.

Here’s another treat by the mysterious Jay Electronica. Everything that I hear from this guy makes me crave his debut album more and more. This guy breathes life into the soul of Hip-Hop with every step and rhyme he makes. Watch out for Jay next year, he’s going to be something special.
