Jay Electronica & Mos Def Will Be At First Avenue August 1st

jayelectronica

Oh good lord, it appears as though two of the most revered emcees at this time will be at First Avenue on August 1st. Might Mos Def and Jay Electronica will surely be tearing up the Main Stage that Saturday night, and I can honestly tell you that I’m going to do everything in my power to be there. Culture Bully also mentioned that these two will be doing a whole album entitled Sympatico together in the near future. I think if these two put out an album it might change the way that people look at the game. There will be more tour dates to come as well.

All Good Things Come To An End

Posted in News on Wednesday, July 8, 2009 by Erik Burg

Like Billy Mays’ reality show (too soon?), all good things must come to an end. And so goes the story of my blogging career. I’m retiring from the Mind Inversion. The needle’s off the record, but Tim, Ryan, and the rest of the crew will undoubtedly keep this ball rolling. It’s been a solid run and I appreciate every reader not only of my material but of the site’s in general. Best of luck with all your endeavors.

This is the shit that I like to hear. Last night EV dropped the newest Step Brothers leak via Twitter, and all I can say is that it’s a gem. Evidence and Alchemist make some incredible music together and this track is truly no different. As I have mentioned in many posts before, I really can’t wait for this album because it’s going to be raw as hell. Listen to Mr. Slow Flow and The Chemist rip apart this track. Also if you haven’t, make sure you go out and get Alchemist’s album Chemical Warfare which is in stores now.

Chali 2na & Talib Kweli, “Lock Shit Down” (Video)

Here is the video for the track “Lock Shit Down” off of Chali’s new album, Fish Outta Water. As I mentioned in a previous post, this track has two incredible emcees on the same track spitting phlegm that will leave you mesmerized. The video was directed excellently by Yoram Benz & Jason Goldwatch. The visuals in this video are awesome and they compliment the track really well. Make sure you go get Chali 2na’s new album Fish Outta Water, in stores now.

Doom on the 4th of July: MP3s from YOB, Greymachine, & Bloody Panda

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , on Saturday, July 4, 2009 by Ryan Buege

It was only 233 years ago that the church bells first rang out over these great United States to signal our newly-earned independence. To be honest, I do not know what the holiday has in common with rock ‘n roll’s bastard son, doom metal, however it’s undeniable that today just happens to be a great day to listen to some slow-burning headbanding epics while you sip your beer ‘n light off bottlerockets. Today, some of the finest names in underground doom are offering up new MP3s to guarantee you get your dosage of doom amidst the happiness & excitement of the 4th.

After calling it quits in 2006, cult doom favorites YOB from Oregon are back with their new album The Great Cessation via Profound Lore Records on July 14th. Although I have yet to hear the whole album, “Burning the Altar” is a stellar track that should turn any doom fan’s head. This time around the riffs are of an even more apocalyptic, Titantic-sinking, crushing nature, with the band directing their torturous chug over the expansive, most spacious cosmic backdrop they’ve accomplished yet. If you can sync your fireworks to explode in time with the beat, this should make one sweet night for you and your metal friends!

Grey Machine

By today, both Aaron Turner and Justin Broadrick have already played in about 30 bands each, and after treading water in the same territory for so long, it was only inevitable that they’d cross paths. Late last year, they finally announced that they had formed another offshoot together called Grey Machine and would be joined by Dave Cochrane (of Head Of David, God, Ice) and Diarmuid Dalton (Jesu, Godflesh). Since the announcement, little news has surfaced about the project, but now a release date has finally confirmed for the band’s first release. The debut album Disconnected will be out August 4th through Hydrahead, and the “single” for “Vultures Descend” that leaked out earlier this year is an indication that this will be one brutal, unpredictable opus.

MP3: Grey Machine, “Vultures Descend” (from Disconnected, available 8/4)

When I first heard Bloody Panda‘s debut album Pheromone in 2007, my jaw dropped to the floor and stayed there for a while. Though the music first appeared to be of a vibe of straightforward, slow-moving doom, the soaring, cathedral-ready female vocals of Yoshiko Ohara began to push past the edges of my traditional comfort zone. As the polyrhythmic chaos layered slowly took center stage, I began to realize that this was not simply a doom metal act willing to rehash the past – this is the band with the most eerie and engrossing vision in doom that I have seen in a long time.

Fast-forward two-and-a-half years, and now we are awaiting the release of Summons, the band’s followup to Pheromone, on August 11th. If just knowing that this visionary underground act has spent 2+ years refining its craft (and is now supported by a partnership with the esteemed Profound Lore Records) isn’t enough to intrigue you, then maybe the MP3 excerpt they’ve released for “Miserere” will!

MP3 SAMPLE: Bloody Panda, “Miserere (excerpt)” (from Summons, available 8/11)

New Holy Ghost! via Green Label Sound

holy ghost record

The site/label that’s brought you great tracks from Matt & Kim to The Cool Kids is back once again to release the first Holy Ghost! track in two years. Green Label Sound, the indie-hipster side of Mountain Dew (I thought they only liked gamers) is ready and willing to give away the spooky disco single “I Will Come Back”. Brooklyn duo Nick Millhiser and Alex Frankel have been hard on the remix trail since their inception, but it’s their solo work that impresses me more often than their edits. And “I Will Come Back” is no exception, following in the disco footsteps, or dance pattern if you will, of “Hold On”, it features vocals that are reverbed and echoed to create a track that feels hollow, yet a drum kick that’s funky and fresh rounds the song into an extremely fun and danceable treat. And what else can you expect from DFA DJs, I mean come on. So turn it on and turn it up, for a free download it doesn’t get much better than this. Enjoy!

The Dodos – new album in September & 2009 tour dates w/ Ruby Suns

Posted in Audio, Concert Dates, Downloads, Music News with tags , , , , , , , , on Wednesday, June 24, 2009 by Erik Burg

dodostimetodie

Good news people, two of the most enjoyable bands are touring together. Even better news, one of them is putting out a new album in the fall. The Dodos and The Ruby Suns will be touring together this fall, and on an extensive trip throughout the entire country the two groups won’t stop in the midwest for too long, but do manage to squeeze in a show here in Minneapolis at the Turf Club on October 20th. I had the pleasure of seeing The Dodos perform live at last year’s Pitchfork Music Festival and they absolutely blew me away, so I would usually say go on that recommendation alone, but I’ve been hooked on The Ruby Suns for about a year now as well. Their album Sea Lion is completely under appreciated and should have been heard by a lot more people, but too bad for all of you missing out I guess. It’s shaping up to be one of the must see concerts of the fall so far, so get your tickets as soon as they go on sale. Here are a few MP3s to get acquainted with the bands if you haven’t heard them yet:

MP3: The Dodos – “Fools”

MP3: The Ruby Suns – “Kenya Dig It?”

The Dodos have been working on a new studio album as well, slated to hit shelves September 15th. Time To Die is the follow up to the mesmerizing Visiter back in 2007. The album will feature a new member in the band as well, upping the number of members to three, a one Keaton Snyder will be featured on the vibraphone. As Meric Long recalls in an interview about the record and their recent touring, Snyder still has a bit to learn:

“He’s a better musician than Logan and I combined. I don’t even know what’s going on with his music theory ideas half the time.” On a similar note, Snyder-a classically-trained musician-is constantly learning what ‘being in a band’ entails. In fact, he didn’t even know how to react when a chord was yanked during his Dodos debut. “After the show,” says Long, “he was like, ‘Yeah, I’ve never had to plug anything in before.’ It was hilarious.”

September 15th is the release date, October 20th is the tour date. So pencil them in, and if you didn’t get enough of The Dodos on the Miller Chill commercial I’m sure you’ll be hearing all about them come fall. Track listing below:

01 Small Deaths
02 Longform
03 Fables
04 The Strums
05 This Is A Business
06 Two Medicines
07 Troll Nacht
08 Acorn Factory
09 Time To Die
