Sunday Metal Video: The Chariot, “Daggers”

The Chariot is a band that seems to have gotten the short end of the stick during the last few years. Mostly because he left Norma Jean right before they really started to go downhill, I don’t think Josh Scogin’s The Chariot has ever really gotten the kudos they deserve for the freeform, peerless, raucous punk-n-metal noise that they create. Somehow the crappiness of latter NJ releases unfortunately tended to overshadow the consistenly awesome output that Scogin’s new band contrbuted to the music world, but hopefully some of that will start to change. Landing on the music map somewhere among an array of bands such as Converge, Lightning Bolt, Meshuggah, Sonic Youth, and Drive Like Jehu, I believe The Chariot are a band who have earned the right to be mentioned among the hardcore genre’s modern luminaries for their commitment to purely original and exciting underground punk rock.

The band just released their new album Wars and Rumors of Wars, and I’m hoping that this will finally be the one to grant them their justified notoriety as one of hardcore and metals most independently minded collectives. Sunday Metal Song: Kylesa, “Said and Done”

Kylesa just came to Minneapolis last week for a performance at the Fine Line, but with all the lavish attention thrown at Mastodon, it maybe was unfortunately too easy to overlook the incredible show that these Savannah, GA natives put on that night. This post is here to straighten out anyone who can admit to this shame.

“Said and Done” is a grandiose track that showcases all this brilliant band’s  best qualities; bombastic cascades of drum thunder are the anchor to some of the thickest guitar grooves this side of Entombed and enough nasty psychedelic metal embellishments to make anyone’s jaw drop. Kylesa is clearly firing on all cylinders these days, and they sound they best I’ve heard from them so far! Check it out for yourself – courtesy of SXSW.

Blue Ox, Tonnage, and Fatty Acid came together for a local show of every kind of fucked up stoner metal imaginable on Thursday night. From purely mammoth doom metal riffs, to stonerized rock, punk, hardcore, and death metal – and everything in between. Sunday Metal Song: Pestilence, “Devouring Frenzy”

Pestilence is back in action (kind of) with a new video for “Devouring Frenzy” from the band’s newest album, Resurrection Macabre – their first album since Spheres was released in 1993. Death metal fans will be happy to know that even 15 years out of the game the band hasn’t lost any fire; in fact, “Devouring Frenzy” indicates the dudes are only getting more vicious with age and new recording advances. Still as technically progressive as I remembered them, “Devouring Frenzy” has extra muscle where it matters. This is sure to be just one of many great many brutal death metal releases this year (Nile, Behemoth – I’m looking at you) and this Sunday Metal Minute acknowledgment is my effort to ensure that this one doesn’t get overlooked by young ones..

Watch newly recorded After the Burial pro-shot live video of “Cursing Akenaten” at Station 4

After the Burial is yet another example of the prime progressive death metal that the Twin Cities is home to these days, and even though 99% of Minneapolitans probably don’t know who they are, there are legions of fans that wait for them to play shows around the globe. With the support of Sumerian Records and a fervent underground of young “deathcore” fans (and, yes, Myspace), After The Burial is one of the few Twin Cities metal bands that have garnered enough acclaim to transition into full-blown 24/7 touring status in the last 10 years. Though they still are kind enough to grace us with a local show every now and again, these days they are proud to be rubbing elbows with names such as Machine Head, Necrophagist, Suffocation, and Dying Fetus and count rising acts such as Suicide Silence and Emmure as good friends. Whatever way you look at it, it seems like After the Burial is poised to be landing some very big tours over the next few years; in unofficial terms, I think you could unofficially christen them as this generation’s ambassadors of MN metal. Better yet, Minnesota’s ambassadors of the breakdown!

If you’ve yet to hear After the Burial and their technical-yet-catchy death metal/hardcore punk hybrid, watch this video of  “Cursing Akenaten” they recorded last month at Station 4 in St. Paul to get acquainted.The dualing guitars on foreign-sounding 8-string lead are undeniably cool, and the young band has an arsenal of twisted breakdowns that were guaranteed to make the hometown crowd move. It’s nearly impossible to get good footage out of Station 4, so I’ll give them big kudos for shooting a high quality (seemingly pro) live video there either way! It gives you an accurate picture of what it’s like to see a show at this venue, and it’s a great representation of their powerful live set. Cheers to the future, guys..

Sunday Metal Minute: Fear Factory, “Self Bias Resistor (live at Brisbane in 1997)”

Anyone who’s followed Dino Cazares in the press in his post-Fear Factory days knows how much he loved to talk shit about his former bandmates. In the interviews he’s given for Divine Heresy, he’s taken pretty much every opportunity possible to deride Burton C. Bell and company for tarnishing the name of the influential industrial death/groove metal band that his riffs had played such a fundamental role in establishing – which is why it was so unbelievable to read that Dino and Bell and reunited in a new music group this week. Though the pair’s new band has yet to announce their name, they have revealed that they will be joined by current Fear Factory bassist Byron Stroud and legendary drummer Gene Hoglan (Dethklok, Strapping Young Lad, Dark Angel, Death, Testament) for a number of shows this summer as well as on the recording of a studio album. Either way, I’m very happy to see these two have made up; the feud always seemed juvenile and pointless to me, and Fear Factory’s landmark albums contained some of the best melodic metal songs of the 1990s. For now, I leave you with this AWESOME live video with from the band’s earliest years, long before their feud; the pro-shot song is “Self Bias Resistor”, taken from the band’s third album, Demanufacture.

The Crinn plan to enter Signature Tone Studios to record Nuclear Blast debut in May

St Paul’s  technical/jazz metal wizards in The Crinn, recent signees to the prestigious international Nuclear Blast metal label, have checked in with a new update from the rehearsal space where they’re working to prepare their forthcoming NB-label debut Dreaming Saturn. As the guys said in a post at their blog, it’s been quite a while since they’ve “posted anything & played anywhere”, but just because we haven’t heard many new songs doesn’t mean The Crinn isn’t hard at work. They’ve finally finished the writing stage and are now ready to move to recording. The guys will move their operation to Signature Tone Studios in Minneapolis on May 15th to begin tracking with Adam Tucker with Zack Ohren at Castle Ultimate in Oakland, CA doing the mixing and Alan Douches at West West Side in New York doing the mastering. While we’re waiting until October 9th (the official release date) to get our hands on the album, the band was kind enough to post several videos from their writing sessions to give us a taste. We’ve posted the most recent one below for your viewing pleasure. Enjoy!

Sunday Metal Minute: Graf Orlock, “Run Over By A Truck”

Man, if there were one song title that aptly described how my head feels right now on Sunday morning, it’s this one. But nonetheless, I’ve got a lot of stuff that I have to accomplish today, and Graf Orlock‘s “Run Over By a Truck” (from their new album Destination Time Today) is giving me the proper kick in the ass I need to start my chores.

As a fan of of the heavy, I just can’t help but love a song that sounds so fucking sick and nasty. The heavy riffage on this gem of modern grindcore is caked in dirty, crusty grime and the vocals are spastic and chaotic like no other.  Not more than 3 minutes ago I was grudgingly accepting the fact that I’d be in a hard-headed mood today, but the refreshing  grind of  Gorlock’s “Run Over By A Truck” has helped me thrash the bad vibes out instantly. Thank you, Graf Orlock.

Metal A/V Roundup: Slayer, Isis, Glorior Belli, Converge and more

Slayer, Psychopathy RedThe thrash legends in Slayer have planned to issue their newest song, “Pyscopathy Red”, as a 7″ vinyl release as part of the annual Record Store Day on April 18th! Only 5,000 of these limited edition blood-red vinyl 7-inch vinyls will be made available, the first sounds that were recorded in a Los Angeles studio last October for Slayer’s forthcoming untitled full-length record of back-to-basics RiB thrash. So don’t forget to get out to support Record Store Day on April 18 and listen to the new “Psychopathy Red” online now while you wait. The list of participating stores is here.

Anyone who knows me well, knows that I’m a total Isis nut. I’m following the release of Wavering Radiant closely (and not allowing myself to listen to a leak until its sent to my doorstep), and have been anticipating every minute. The new song “20 Minutes / 40 Years” has me confident that this album tops their most recent ouput, and now they’ve got a new in studio video that making me just itch when I wonder if it’s true. The clip sounds more like House of Low Culture than Isis, but it serves to prove that the band has only further fell in love with their art of heady psychedelics.

French black metallers Glorior Belli just announced the release of their next album, Meet Us of the Southern Sign last week, and now they have graced us with a new track of aural psychosis entitled “In Every Grief – Stricken Blues”. Taking a page from the book of Opeth, they play one of the more alluring adaptations from black metal that I’ve heard recently; a far different approach than much of the very raw BM that has been predominant the last few years. This song is a slow, gorgeous, heavily-layered buildup (with clean vocals!) rather than the blasting chaos you might expect, and could find a welcome audience outside BM in the same way that their fellow Frenchmen in Gojira have found crossover appeal outside of death metal. Give it a listen at MetalKult, and don’t forget to catch them on tour at Station 4 with Absu in June!

Isis, Wavering Radiant

Isis is back. In only a few weeks, their new album Wavering Radiant will be officially unveiled, and this guy couldn’t be happier! Really, when it rains it pours; within a short 24 hour period I’m getting my ears on the first tastes of music from new Converge AND Isis – I think my head is about to explode. Isis just posted the song “20 Minutes/40 Years” over at their MySpace website (UPDATE: we’ve got a free MP3 linked below), and I’m now, for the indeterminate future, dutifully listening on repeat to this precursor of the divine psychedelic doom metal that is coming to everyone’s ears by April 21st. You’ll all likely just have to resign to the same lifestyle as well, and Isis seems to think it should be enough for now. In their words:

We feel this [“20 Minutes/ 40 Years”] is a good representation of [Wavering Radiant]. Our friend Matt Santoro is working on a video for this song which will be completed around the time of the records release. This is also the song we showcased on the ATP tour we did back in December. We hope you enjoy it. There’s lots of “ear candy” in this one, so be sure to listen on some headphones – or, better yet, wait until the vinyl is released for full sonic enjoyment.

Cattle Decapitation, Regret and the GraveCattle Decapitation – music video released this week for their first single (is it really called that for a grindcore band?) from The Harvest Floor, “Regret and the Grave“. It’s one that leaves little to the imagination; haunting, scary, sick’n’twisted, in-your-face blasting, grinding, gritty madness!

Amon Amarth, Guardians of Asgaard

Amon Amarth – their second music video from their recent Twilight of the Thundergod is now available, created for the defiant Viking death metal battle hymn “Guardians of Asgaard“. The song features Petrov from Entombed, and the video is epic and fucking awesome (in plainspeak). Nothing more needs to be acknowledged other than the fact that Amon Amarth owns, and the video and new album are further proof of their exalted status.
