New, raw audio has been leaking out from the Boston MA legends of technical hardcore & metal experimentation in Converge over the past year. First as background music to certain Deathwish podcasts in late-2008, then early this year in their select live shows, and now as a rehearsal in-studio video. It’s a time to be excited; this is the first truly audible recording of the forthcoming Converge album to hit the web! All I’m gonna say is that it sounds like Kurt Ballou has been working overtime (the riffing is out of this world, but man, that tone is fucking incredible!). I’ll let the music do the talking… Continue reading

Converge recording new album in May; plans Chicago “residency” beforehand

Posted in Sunday Metalhead Minute with tags chimaira, mastodon, Metal, spring 2009 on Sunday, March 22, 2009 by Ryan BuegeWoot! Back from my spring leave of absence and ready to assault the web with more writing! For my past few Metalhead Minutes, I’ve been delving into some band’s from the obscure underbelly of some of metal’s rising artists (in my eyes). This week I’ll bring things back a bit closer to the surface; some of the commoners might actually be listening to the choices I’ve selected for this post. These songs come from two albums that will be unavoidable for anyone who even passively associates themselves with metal in the spring of 2009!
First, take a listen to the lead single from Mastodon‘s newest album, Crack the Skye. As a reminder, this album will be in stores everywhere on Tuesday, and “Divinations” is an epic, psych’n’roll metal masterwork that is only an indicator of the direction these Georgian metalheads have decided to take. I’ll have my review of the album posted on Monday, so I won’t get into the specifics now, but just enjoy the preview video for now to tide you over!
Video: Mastodon, “Divinations” (from Crack the Skye, available 03/24)
Maybe this is an unsuspecting choice for anyone who’s followed my tastes on the site, but honestly, Chimaira is a band that has never let me down. Despite the harsh treatment the band has endured from the community in general over the past few years, I’ve always seen them as a band that is thinking outside the box and pushing boundaries rather than being confined by them. Over the years, their attack has continued to be refined and “Secrets of the Dead” indicates another progression. The track comes from their forthcoming album The Infection, an album that will be sure to cement the band a permanent place in the metal history books. Though it still clings tight to the trash and groove metal centerpiece that Chimaira fans will know and love, death metal, epic doom metal, and black metal are all nuanced, as well. Simply put, “Secrets of the Dead” seems to meld my favorite aspects of all things brutal, and I hope the rest of the album is of the same caliber. In theory, a song like this could’ve been a mess, but Chimaira seems to have hit created a legendary sound for their newest evolution. Listen to “Secrets of the Dead” now and see what you’ve been missing!

Posted in Music News with tags all the saints, darker my love, hardcore, Metal, minneapolis, minus the bear, post-hardcore, post-rock, progressive, Psychedelic, split, these arms are snakes, touch and go records, triple rock social club, young widows on Monday, February 23, 2009 by Ryan Buege
These Arms Are Snakes are pushing the art of the split release like no other these days, and have announced plans to put out a limited split 7″ with upcoming tourmates, All The Saints. This is the fifth split they’ve planned in the last two years, and right now it’s one of two that are expected this year (the other is the Minus the Bear split that was already announced). Despite releasing an amazing new album at the end of last year entitled Tail Swallower and Dove that provides enough furious and progressive post-hardcore to satisfy those looking for new material, TAAS still isn’t able to sit still and just tour like normal musicians.
On this split with All the Saints, These Arms are Snakes side of the split features the track “Washburn” (a Japan-only bonus from the Tail Swallower.. album) in addition to artwork from Alicja Trout. Apparently, Touch and Go Records will be releasing the split within the next month or so, but there’s no word whether the massive (and very sad) cuts that Touch and Go announced today will hold up this release. My guess is that the vinyls have already been pressed, but who knows?… Hopefully it will be available in time for when TAAS comes through Triple Rock Social Club in Minneapolis with All the Saints and Darker My Love this Thursday, February 26th. Either way, it’s been a few years since I’ve had the chance to catch their gig and I’m looking forward to a wild show.
Keep reading for all the band’s upcoming US tour dates… Continue reading →
Metal & Hardcore video roundup; Mastodon, DEP, Lamb of God and more
Posted in Video with tags dillinger escape plan, lamb of god, mastodon, Metal, psyopus, st. vitus, the obsessed, wino on Tuesday, February 17, 2009 by Ryan BuegeIt’s been a busy week between my first week of tests and a crazy amount of good live shows coming to the city, but I dug back a couple of days and found all the newest metal and hardcore video you should hear about. Turn up and tune in!
Dillinger Escape Plan, live from NJ basement
Dillinger Escape Plan play “briefly announced”/secret New Jersey basement show in area smaller than their tour bus. Rolling Stone actually covered it and posted great review of the ceiling breaking, 40 drinking, bone breaking, super intimate show from this band that built its fame off the intensity of these very same DIY type of shows in the late 90s. Watch this video as they barrel through “The Mullet Burden”, “Panasonic Youth”, and “43% Burnt” before the power goes out. They have a DVD coming out soon entitled We’re Not Trying to Impress You that will feature live footage from all of their phases as a band..
Mastodon, in studio recording Crack the Skye
Mastodon is soon to release their new album Crack the Skye, and its that time where they start treating us to treats such as games and previews and such to whet our appetite. In keeping with this tradition, they have released their very first in studio video, and from the sounds of Brett Hinds (who is definitely not normally this sober) they band is more focused than ever. If this really is “their” Led Zeppelin IV, we’re all about to have our minds blown..
Lamb of God, “Set to Fail” music video
We reviewed Lamb of God’s forthcoming album last week and were pretty impressed; this week they released their first music video from Wrath, and it happens to be from one of their best, most catchy songs off of the album, “Set to Fail”

Psyopus premiered “The Burning Halo” music video from their new album Odd Senses, in stores today!

Concert Photo Recap: Meshuggah, Cynic, and The Faceless @ Station 4
Posted in Concert Reviews with tags cynic, death metal, live, meshuggah, Metal, minnesota, obzen, progressive metal, st. paul, station 4, the faceless on Monday, February 16, 2009 by Ryan BuegeWow! I don’t think I should be allowed to review this one beyond that one word, seeing as how all these bands place among my favorite active music groups (uh yeah, if you didn’t realize yet, I’ve got a very soft spot in my heart for progressive metal). Years of anticipation for both Meshuggah and Cynic to play again in Minnesota were met with great rewards on Friday, February 13th at Station 4 in St. Paul, MN, with both bands dishing out equal servings of old and new mind-boggling progressive metal. Though nearly half the age of the members of the other bands, The Faceless were right at home on the bill and seemed to turn quite a few heads.
It’s always very difficult getting any good photos at Station 4 when you don’t line up a photo pass. When Station 4 is packed with a metal hungry sold out crowd that is switched on into tornado-mode, thrashing to Meshuggah, it becomes nearly impossible. I did my best, and surprisingly got quite a few keepers. Here are the photos from the Meshuggah, Cynic, and The Faceless show at Station 4:
Keep viewing the gallery! There’s still many photos of Meshuggah, Cynic, and The Faceless left, so just hit read more to continue… Continue reading →
Video: Burnt By the Sun first studio recording sessions for final album
Posted in Video with tags burnt by the sun, dave witte, hardcore, heart of darkness, jon adubato, Metal, mike olender, relapse records, ted patterson on Friday, February 13, 2009 by Ryan BuegeWe were on the ball in reporting this a few months ago, but if you missed it, there’s a newsflash: Burnt By the Sun has reunited to record one final album! Apparently, after Dave Witte and Mike Olender heard some of the material that Jon Adubato and Ted Patterson had been recording after they left, they were simply compelled to rejoin with them and make one last record together. Witte has been having great success playing drums for the incredible Municipal Waste during the last few years, and it’s not like he really needed to go back to BBTS. So, with that in mind, I’m predicting that this is some of BBTS’s most incredible material to date. Right now, this world needs more BBTS, and I’m hoping that their final album, Heart of Darkness, will help earn and solidify the prestigious place in the history of hardcore and metal that they rightly deserve.
Keep reading below to watch their web video featuring interviews with Witte and Olender and the studio recording of the song the sparked the reunion, “Goliath”: Continue reading →
Ozzfest is officially over, but who really cares?
Posted in Music News with tags California Metalfest, hardcore, LA Murderfest, Maryland Deathfest, Metal, New England's Metal and Hardcore Festival, ozzfest, robot mosh fest, rockstar mayhem fest, scion rock fest, Texas Metal Up Your Ass on Thursday, February 12, 2009 by Ryan Buege
As Blabbermouth reports today, Ozzy’s too busy with his shitty new reality show and half-assed music to put on another Ozzfest this year, but we don’t really need his shitty festival anyway!
Ozzfest has had its time in the sun, and after a year of hard economic times it’s not surprising that an expensive touring package of this kind would have a hard time succeeding unless it’s extremely well put together. Although I admittedly have not been to the show since 2001, I have heard many rumors that the recent experience was not nearly up to par with what I experienced and certainly not comparable to the shows’ glory days of the mid 90s.
For what my money’s worth, I would much rather go to a great destination festival of the traditional European variety. As MetalSucks reminds us, many new underground metal festivals of this kind have been popping up all over the United States during the last several years, and now many are getting quite reputtable lineups. Examples include New England’s Metal and Hardcore Festival, California Metalfest, Maryland Deathfest, Texas Metal Up Your Ass, LA Murderfest, Atlanta’s Scion Rock Fest, and even Milwaukee’s Robot Mosh Fest. With the high number of brilliant package tours being lined up as well, who really needs a bloated, commercialized Ozz-o-rama on wheels? Not me, and surely not most metalheads.
For those still craving the Ozzfest format, don’t worry! The Rockstar Energy sponsored Mayhem festival tour looks like its getting more success than ever. From the looks of their recent lineup additions for this summers tour, it will be worth every penny that you’ll pay, whether you agree with the shows corporate nature or not.
Album Review: Lamb of God, Wrath
Posted in Music Reviews with tags lamb of god, Metal, metalcore, Richmond, Virgina, Wrath on Tuesday, February 10, 2009 by Ryan Buege
Somewhere along their path during the last 7 years or so, the brutal metal-meets-hardcore Richmond, VA-based Lamb of God went from being just some metal band to the biggest fucking metal band on the planet. It’s unclear to me how they were really so successful in their climb to the top; their thick, riff-heavy style never really bowed to the passing trends of the Scandinavian-influenced metalcore movement to the absurd degree that many bands did, nor did they really ever create a new genre either, or even strive for much lateral thinking in general. And for that matter, Randy Blythe’s vicious roaring and screeching doesn’t exactly translate too well in “radio-friendly”, does it? Really, was it just the luck of the draw? I’d say ‘not quite’; their management has been extremely skilled at landing the band on headlining and supporting tours year-after-year-after-year that put these guys in front of exactly the right crowd. With this kind of support, Lamb of God has always been free to just do what they do; make some very badass boot-stompin’, face-splitting metal. It is now the eve of their fifth full length release, Wrath, and it appears Lamb of God are more aware of what people have come to expect from them than ever. While they clearly seek to shatter those expectations, Wrath is a well-produced release that sees them both expanding and stepping back to rely on their tried-and-true tricks, for better or worse.
Anyone who’s familiar with Lamb of God might be a bit taken back by the acoustic intro from this typically “ready, set, go” band. The first two songs taken together offer a much more progressive version of Lamb of God than we’ve heard before, with “In Your Words” segueing through a wider variety of vocal ranges and chord structures. In fact, the song vaguely sounds like Lamb of God have been melded with the progressive death of their brethren in Gojira, and it’s a welcome adaption in truth. However, after the shocking 1, 2, 3 punch of “Set To Fail”, “Contractor”, and “Fake Messiah”, it’s obvious that we’re back on Lamb of God’s home turf. While lyrics like “black liquid assets fuck the mujaheddin // paint their picket fences red with the American dream” might not rub some of you the right way, the riffage is just so blistering, crisp, and memorable that it’s impossible not to headbang along. The rest of the tracks on Wrath continue in the way that it was begun, with Lamb of God’s gritty bloodcurdling metal and anthemic vocals melding surprisingly nicely with some of the more varied textures that were introduced on Sacrament and embraced on “In Your Words”.
To me, Wrath is mostly successful. Despite the fact that it occasionally sounds like a band that’s slowly shedding it’s old skin and going through some slight growing pains, by-and-large this is some of the best ‘commercial’ metal the U.S. has to offer. The only important question at the end of the day is ‘will Wrath play well live?’ and the answer to that is a resounding fuck yes! It’s important to remember that Lamb of God probably doesn’t want you to intellectuallize their music; they make this shit to guarantee that the pit keeps spinning around.

Spinal Tap plan first album in 20 years
Posted in Music News with tags Metal, passion, pretension, rockumentary, spinal tap, stonehenge on Wednesday, February 4, 2009 by Ryan Buege
Who the fuck saw this coming? Not me, but then again, AC/DC and Metallica had some of the best selling tours in the world last year, and old school metal vibes are back in a big way in recent years in the underground. Plus, the awesome Anvil documentary that came out last year proved that there still are many good stories to tell about aging rockers like this. I hope Rob Reiner can get the old crew together and go the extra mile so we can see a part 2 of this Rockumentary, 25 year later.
For now, please watch this hilarious video of the reunited Tap playing their progressive metal classic “Stonehenge” live at Live Earth in 2007. :)
