Northern Outpost Ep. 5, Bouncer Fighter and the ongoing Minneapolis music renaissance

Northern Outpost, the only Minnesota based online music television show worth talking about, has posted their fifth episode from their first season online, and this episode features the very awesome, dissonant, organic, epic progressive punk of the super active Minneapolis based band Bouncer Fighter. On this week’s show from Uptown’s Owl Recording Studios, the interview hits on a number of interesting topics such as the effect of Minnesota weather on the music of Bouncer Fighter, the cultural influence of the big city on a small town country-boy, and the closeness & undeniable greatness of the current MPLS scene. The Second Supper Issue 151, Cabin Fever

second-supper-151 Sorry that my posts on the Second Supper are tardy folks, things on the blog as well as in my life have been crazy as of late. Needless to say I am back with a post about last week’s issue (issue 151), Cabin Fever. This issue holds especially true to all of us here at Mind Inversion because naturally we are all from the Midwest. All of us here know what it’s like to be cooped up in doors during the entirety of winter, and not being able to rejoice until March. All of the articles in the paper have to do with snow and winter activities.

Sadly after the Cabin Fever issue we will no longer read the great words of Maria Pint. This is her last issue, and I highly suggest you check out her goodbye, it’s very good. Ben Clark writes up an interesting article on the always interesting sport of Broomball. He also discusses the league for Broomball that we have in La Crosse. Amber Miller writes about her favorite activity in the winter (Tai Chi) and what she does to get out of the house. Briana Rupel writes up an article on her bowling league (which by the way has the best title ever, (Fuck it, Dude, Let’s Go Bowling) and her experiences in it. Last but not least Emily Faeth has an article about the Polar Plunge in La Crosse. She also provides a nice amount of insight and history on the event that raises a lot of money for a good reason every year.

All in all this is a great issue. It makes me feel good that spring is right around the corner (knock on wood), and the folks at the Second Supper can sympathize with what I’ve been going through. As I said we are going to be saying goodbye to Maria Pint (You will be missed), and we here at Mind Inversion wish her the best of luck in all of her future endeavours. Mogwai plans to revisit Minnesota on 2009 U.S. tour

After their First Avenue show was abruptly cancelled late last year due to Martin’s heart complications, many Mogwai fans were left a bit shocked and bewildered. Thankfully, he was quickly on his feet again, and the band has stayed true to their promise to return to the midwest as soon as possible. So far, no openers have been announced for their rescheduled show on May 10th at First Avenue in Minneapolis, and I hope it stays that way. The Hawk Is Howling had some of my favorite songs from last year on it, but I’m definitely in support of giving the band plenty of time to honor their classic albums, as well.

Muja Messiah freestyles at Peter Parker’s on B96

Via Culture Bully, B96 recently had the the self-proclaimed “hottest thing cooking” in Minneapolis, Muja Messiah, in the studio and he displayed his incredible flow on air for the rest of the city to hear. They discuss a range of topics, from fake and stupid MCs to Muja’s own steadily rising career, and after a few minutes Muja freestyles over his own beat that he brought with him into the studio. Hit play and watch the video to see why this guy’s name never stops coming up in the local hip-hop conversation lately.

While they’re hyping his show at Axis next week, I want to remind everyone about the awesome set that’s planned at Fine Line next week featuring sets of Atmosphere meets Brother Ali, Muja Messiah meets M.anifest, Toki Wright meets St. Paul Slim, and DJ Jimmy 2 Times meets DJ Plain Ole Bill. Clipse & Rick Rubin “Cooking Up” Classics

149402clipserubin525 It looks as though your favorite Cocaine Cowboys and one of the most legendary music makers of our time are “cooking up” some classic material. Clipse & Rick Rubin have been in the studio recording material for Clipse’s new album Til the Casket Drops which is due out sometime in the summer. According to the article that I read on Pitchfork, they have finished one track and they will be recording one or two more tracks together in the studio. I can’t even imagine what the outcome of this collaboration is going to be, both Rubin & Clipse are at the top of their game.

The first single off Til the Casket Drops, “Kinda Like a Big Deal”, will be dropping on March 9th and it features Kanye West and DJ Khalil (who did one of the best beats on the Weatherman LP, “All Said and Done“). Til the Casket Drops, like many other albums, is going to be one of the highlights this year. Make sure you stay tuned to Mind Inversion for updates on the album.

Peter Bjorn and John have “Nothing to Worry About”

Peter Bjorn And John’s new album Living Thing hasn’t dropped quite yet, out officially March 31st, but a few of their singles from the new album have been leaking out. Most notably is the overly-happy and upbeat “Nothing to Worry About.” It’s a track that changes a lot of what PB&J have been known for. Gone is the clean style and extreme likable-ness in exchange for distorted and nearly lo-fi vocal choruses. I’m personally a huge fan of the track, I think it’s a great step for the band especially after the under-rated SeasideRock instrumental album. Some of the instrumentals on the track are very derivative of what they created on Seaside Rock, but the vocals are nothing like their past material… No whistles, sorry guys. Though “Nothing to Worry About” is certainly a track you could find yourself whistling to. It’s a fun song, very danceable, very fun, and yet nothing too outlandish or silly like some tracks of Writer’s Block. It’s a great track, hands down. Check it out below, Enjoy!

I promised more remixes and Mash-ups too, so here you go. It’s one of the most sampled and mashed up tracks I know of- B.I.G.’s “Party and Bullshit” with the new aforementioned “Nothing to Worry About.” And while many of the crazy mash-ups out there today fail miserably, this one actually does a pretty fine job of staying sane and accomplishing what any remix should do, it makes you want to put a giant grin on your face and groove your feet all night long. I love this edit, I love the original, I love music. And I hope you do too, Enjoy!

Lykke Li gets a blast from the past on Nardwuar

This is a great interview, simply because of the crazy number of props this dude is hiding in his bin. Lykke has a hard time responding to the questions because she’s just so amazed by what this wacky Canadian keeps pulling out, and it’s quite hilarious. She gave an incredible performance a few weeks ago at the Varsity in MPLS and Culture Bully captured the whole show. Anyone who’s asking themselves “why should I care?” should quickly set themselves straight; dig deeper to find out what you’re missing from this beautiful Swede.

Fargo’s Battlefields set release date for Translation Loss debut

This is just a short update to bring you up-to-speed on one of my favorite mind-expanding metal bands from the area, the young Fargo-ND ethereal post metal/chaotic hardcore innovators in Battlefields. Their debut full-length on Translation Loss Records (Dysrhythmia, Intronaut, Total Fucking Destruction) is now scheduled to be released on March 31, 2009. Listening to some of the goodies from the album that they’ve got on their myspace gives me the impression that (even after several months of waiting with these snippets on repeat) I’m not quite ready for what I’m about to hear. Post-metal truly hasn’t sound this fresh, defiant, and unstoppable to my ears since it first became my drug of choice. It’s too bad the album won’t be available before they play at the Triple Rock Social Club on March 11th with rising psych/prog rockers Irepress, Minneapolis’s Frontier, and our friends in local doomgaze lords Vernal Pool, but that’s no reason to miss this show. With all of these bands supporting unbelievable new material, there’s no doubt in my mind that this will be one of the the most impressive “local” underground metal shows lined up for the remainder of the 2009 winter. Can’t miss!

To round out some great pre-coverage of this show, we’ll have an excellent interview online next week that we conducted with Vernal Pool at their stomping grounds in NE MPLS a few days ago about the show and their forthcoming debut full length album. Also, they’ll will be playing a verrrrry late set on Saturday at the 400 Bar for the Devil’s Work Shop 5 Year Anniversay Party, so metalheads shouldn’t fail to stay around til bar time to be impressed before the Battlefields/Irepress tour sweeps through the city.

Disfear incite “Fear and Trembling” with new track

Disfear
Sweden’s long-running D-beat hardcore devotees in Disfear have recently posted the brand new track, “Fear And Trembling”, for listening at the band’s MySpace: MySpace.com/Disfear. This track is the first public release they’ve made from their recent highly anticipated split 7” release with Doomriders that recently became available. As I hoped, “Fear and Trembling” is the perfect introduction for anyone who has not heard this incredible band yet.

It’s a much longer track than you’re used to hearing in hardcore, and the driving rhythm and galloping riffage quickly makes you lose sight of this. It’s an anthemic gem, bristling with power and gaining steam as each verse sets loose into its own vicious chorus. During the brief interlude, the dense atmosphere that Disfear creates is lifted, and the never-ending beat is stripped down and given some breathing room in the spotlight. Not for long, as the madness quickly creeps back in dissolving the surroundings back into the unforgiving sickness..
