Rhymesayers rocks South by Southwest

Rhymesayers has been all over the map the last two years, and putting on a showcase at South by Southwest seems like the perfect thing to do. I’ve been loving the material that all of these artists (besides Abstract Rude, he’s got a new one coming) have dropped in the last year. I love hearing Brother Ali talk about the live show that an artist can bring to the stage. To me he is pretty much the epitome of a sick ass live show. It sounds like Jake One & Freeway are going to be putting out some jaw dropping material this summer with The Stimulus Package. The chemistry that those two displayed on Jake One’s White Van Music was ridiculous, and I can’t imagine what an entire album is going to sound like. Make sure you check the video because Rhymesayers Entertainment is going to be doing some huge things this year.

Method Man forgets to pay his taxes because of blunt smoke

Posted in Music News with tags , , on Sunday, March 29, 2009 by Tim Althaus

method_man011508031457gif I laughed hysterically when I saw the headline for this article at HipHop DX. The headline read “Method Man Says Marijuana Made Him Forget Tax Payment”. Apparently the IRS showed up at Meth’s house and seized his 2008 Lincoln Navigator because he owed money in backed taxes. People had apparently thought Meth was short on cash, but this apparently is not the case. He was quoted as saying “Myself, I’m a pothead. It’s no secret. Everyone knows that, I go out on the road and forget everything else”. He also addressed the cash flow issue in the article as well for all of those thinking he was broke, “I’ve found checks from 2005 that haven’t been opened yet. We are talking about significant accounts of money!” The whole situation was summed up best by Method Man at the end of the article, “Because I got high, I forgot to pay. It was stupid. I’m an idiot for that”.

I think that this is funny as hell. Method Man is one of those guys that is always smoking everywhere you see him, and he definitely isn’t shy about it. I think it’s great that Method man just told everyone straight up. Any way you look at it, this guy is fucking awesome.

Make sure you go out and get Blackout 2 when it comes out, because the album is going to be crazy. The first time these two blacked out I loved the album, I know they won’t disappoint with this one either.

The Roots jam “The Next Movement”

This video is a testament as to why I want to see The Roots so damn bad. These guys pack so much energy live on stage, and from what I’ve heard these guys put on one of the best shows you will ever see. In this video Black Thought is spitting the track “The Next Movement” over a super jazzy uptempo beat that ?uestlove and the other members have concocted. The one thing that impresses me so much about these guys is that every single thing that they do seems completely natural. This video is something that is a must watch for any music fan in general. Make sure you peep The Roots alongside Jimmy Fallon every weeknight on NBC.

P.O.S. covers Pearl Jam, “Why Go”

Posted in Media, Video with tags , , , , on Wednesday, March 25, 2009 by Tim Althaus

This video is just another testament to how talented Stef really is. This video shows him covering the Pearl Jam tune “Why Go”, and may I mind you it’s very impressive. I love how he has the MPC right next to his keyboard and he tears the shit out of both of them during the duration of the track. Make sure you go out and get Never Better now because that album is truly some great material.

Talib Kweli & Hi-Tek talk to HipHop Official at SXSW

Posted in Media, Video with tags , , , on Wednesday, March 25, 2009 by Tim Althaus

Man Kweli & Hi-Tek really have me anticipating the new Reflection Eternal album. This interview is making the anticipation grow at an alarming rate. Hi-Tek basically says that this new album is going to be the next level from the previous Reflection album, and that makes me really fucking excited. Notice how Kweli talks about updating their formulas with the times (Gang Starr shit). Hi-Tek says that the album is at a “strong 50%” which means that we should look forward to seeing it relatively soon. Also make sure you look close in the background, you can see Hi-Tek punching on the pads of the MPC in the background (are all producers doing this now?).

Black Milk rocks Manchester

Posted in Media, Video with tags , , , on Wednesday, March 25, 2009 by Tim Althaus

Watching this video was pretty much the highlight of my day. It also makes me want to see a live Black Milk show more and more. Watch this video as he completely destroys his set and tears it up for the fine city of Machester. He starts off the set with one of my favorites from Tronic, “Long Story Short”, and then follows with “So Gone” which was a track from Popular Demand. I love when Black jumps on the MPC and starts playing around with the beat for “The Matrix”. This guy has some serious skills and there’s no reason you shouldn’t check this. If you haven’t picked up Tronic yet I don’t know if there’s any hope for you…

Here we are again folks with another episode of  “your favorite podcast about nothing in particular”. This week’s episode is about the live Diggnation show at SXSW, as well as Nic’s trip to Texas, music, movies and wine. This is shaping up to be one of my favorite things to watch on the net. Make sure you check out the video, and don’t forget to check out their site here.

Mos Def gets “Ecstatic” about his new album

Posted in Music News with tags , , , on Monday, March 23, 2009 by Tim Althaus

mos-def-the-ecstatic2I was over at Okayplayer the other day and this news article definitely caught my eye. I’ve been looking forward to a new Mos Def album since his last one. I sadly wasn’t a huge fan of Tru3 Magic but I know that Mos has it in him to make another classic. They were saying that the date that is tentative for the release is June 9th (not official), but I’m not going to count on it. Make sure you check out the video below which has Mos spitting a pretty dope acapella.

Black Milk is having “Dreams”

Posted in Downloads with tags , , , , on Monday, March 23, 2009 by Tim Althaus

artist_blackmilk-realdMan it seems like the year that Black Milk has been having can only happen in a dream. He released (in my opinion) the best album of last year, and is coming out with more deadly venom this year with a wide array of projects (Random-Axe, Tracks on the new Slum Village, working with KRS on a track).

This track “Dreams” is a web exclusive that Black Milk released and it sounds much like anything else he has done in the past, fire as hell. The beat starts out with a hard hitting bass to snare and fades to a nice piano and synth loop. Continue reading
