New Max Tundra video, touring through Minneapolis this weekend

Posted in Concert Dates, Video with tags , , , , , on Tuesday, March 31, 2009 by Erik Burg

Max Tundra, the glitchy-electro-pop one man show, will be heading through the midwest this coming weekend. Friday April 3rd Junior Boys will be headlining a show at the First Ave Mainroom, with Max Tundra opening. Both acts have the same sort of feel to them, and I’m sure the two awesome bands will be able to feel off each other and get the crowd plenty into it. And apparently Max likes to dance around on stage like a little boy when he performs too, so at least it will be entertaining of not mind blowing (hehe).

He’s got a new video out too, for the the track “Which Song.” I’d discourage this to the people who got sick watching the Blair Witch Project, seeing as the camera has a liiiittttle  tendency to move around, but see for yourself:

And grab some tickets to the First Ave show if you enjoyed, only $10 bucks!

So this Matthew Mondanile guy is the man

Matthew Mondanile is the lead man for the band Real Estate, and solo man on the project Ducktails. Matthew Mondanile pretty much rocks. There seems to be quite a backstory for the guy too, which I’m trying to sweep together piece by piece as well. But it’s easy to find out how great his music is. Check out a clip of an interview he did for Viceland:

It’s a basic tip, but it sounds like a good one.
Yeah. So at New World Hot Dog we’d listen to music and drink beer. Before I was introduced to Pacific City I was pretty bummed and didn’t know how to focus my jams. I was scatter-brained – I traveled to different places while I was in Pacific City, like Finland, Spain, Granada and just chilled with my friend Brittany. Granada’s one of the most beautiful places…

Hold on – what island did you say Pacific City was on?
I’m not really sure. It’s somewhere between New Jersey and Asia.

Does it exist in the physical world?
For some people, yes. But not for others.

So there is Real Estate, a four person band New Jersey. And apparently the band spend a great amount of time on the Jersey shore growing up, many of their track titles and themes for the lyrics seem to be derived from the mist and crashes of the busy shore. You can hear it in the first few seconds of “Pool Swimmers,” there is this misty and fuzzy sound lingering above all that is going on. The slow moving guitar, not on in “Pool Swimmers” but in other tracks as well, creates a very comfortable atmosphere for the listener. Their snares have a spooky feeling to them as well, reminding me of a one Ancient Crux I featured on here a while back. The watered-down and distant vocals feel right at home, nestled down below all of the interweaving of the music. If Brooklyn and the Caribbean had a kid, he’d make music like this.

Real Estate – “Beach Comber”

And then there is Ducktails. The much more adventurous and experimental outlet for Mondanile. I guess I’ll stick with my hypothetical children theme and say that Ducktails is like the bastard child of Panda Bear and Air France. For growing up in New Jersey this guy sure does have a grasp on the sunny beach theme. “Beach Point Pleasant” is a looping masterpiece, with a sample starting things off and continuing throughout the entire piece. The track seems to exemplify what Ducktails is all about, stringy guitar and peaceful mellotrons, little to no vocalization, and presto: it’s 1968 and you’re sitting the beach with a young Brian Wilson.

Ducktails – “Beach Point Pleasant”

I feel terribly naive talking about this man’s music, for it seems as though there is a lot more to take on than what I have for the past few days. But I love what he does, and I want you to love it as well. So obviously I would highly encourage giving either of the two actsducktails a spin, especially this time of the year Ducktails can at least make you feel like it isn’t still below freezing outside, ha. (I’ve been running a cabin fever theme on here for years it feels like). Most of all though, support what you like, buy a record, buy one Ducktails tapes even. It’s bands like this that make me keep a great perspective on music and its influence on me. It can make me smile and weep with the same loop, hanging on the twang of every string. Cliched? fuck it. I love music.

P.Y.T.s get on the floor

So I stumbled upon this guy tonight. Kind of  REALLY makes me smile. I’ve got a soft spot in my hear for Michael Jackson, so anytime this guy gets a remix or something of the sort I usually check it out. This edit of the demo version of P.Y.T. is one of the finer and more well done mixes I’ve heard of the King of Pop. It feels a lot more laid back than the original, almost like some sort of Larry Levan edit. Either way it’s awesome, and I’m glad I found it. Hope you feel the same way, Enjoy!

Gorillaz documentary Bananaz finally set to be released

Posted in Music News, Video with tags , , , , , , , , on Saturday, March 28, 2009 by Erik Burg

bananazAfter over two years of rumors, filming, and set-backs, the documentary about Pop sensation and musically transcending Gorillaz is about to be released. Entitled Bananaz, the film is live action as opposed to the cartoon rendered imaginary band members that have dominated the band to this point. Watching the trailer and reading some other things about it, the two people who dominate the film are Damon Alborn and Jamie Hewlett. Which is awesome to hear, Alborn is the musical genius behind all of this (and Blur of course too) and Hewlett is the puppet master behind all of the cartoon ideas.

Bananaz is directed by Ceri Levy, the same person who directed the Blur documentary a few years back. The debut for the film will come April 20th on the flash video website Babelgum. It will then play there for four weeks and DVD copies of the film will be able to be bought soon after the release as well (the pre-order link is “coming soon” to the doc’s website). Theatrical release of the film is set for June of this summer 2009.

Not sure if you are excited for this film or not, but I’ve always been a huge Gorillaz fan, and I think what they have done for cross-genre bands and the Pop music industry as a whole is huge. Almost every project that Hewlett and Alborn have been a part of has been extremely successful, i.e. the Journey to the West album, their website design, Live DVD, and spin off cartoons.

I would definitely recommend checking out this video when it premieres April 20th, and if it comes to a theater near you go and support the band too. For some more information on the Doc and band: Bananaz Gorillaz Befriend Murdoc on Facebook Babelgum

Why is it so cold still?!

Posted in Audio, Downloads, Music News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , on Friday, March 27, 2009 by Erik Burg

Oh man, I’m so sick of this weather. I’m praying for the day when I can just open my window and enjoy some fresh air without having to look outside and see it snowing. So I’ve pretty much become a total recluse again this week, avoiding the said cold, and reading the internets all day ‘n night (sorry, can’t get that song out my head). Sad for me, but good for you. I’ve uncovered and gathered some of this week’s highlights in the music world. Video, mp3s, etc. So curl up by the fireplace, and Enjoy!

Starting things off is the video for the new Juan Maclean track “One Day.” This track has come as somewhat of a surprise to me after hearing the first two singles off the album run around the ten minute mark each; thinking that The Juan would revert to more 12″ mix type material, “One Day” has more of a pop track than anything else I’ve heard. The track also focuses heavily on Nancy Whang’s vocals, something that has drawn me towards the album ever since it’s inception. “One Day” doesn’t amaze me, but it’s good, and I can’t wait to hear the full album. From The Future Will Come due out April 21st 2009 on DFA Records.

Next is the video to the stellar N.A.S.A. track “Gifted.” For all of you who haven’t heard the album yet, I’d suggest checking it out. There’s a lot to like about the album, its features everyone from Tom Waits to Ol’ Dirty Bastard, but “Gifted” features the heavyweight of them all: Kanye West. Though I’m not a huge fan and his first verse on here sort of upsets me, (no Kanye, people wore tight pants before you did) I do enjoy the track. Oh yeah, and did i mention Santogold and Lykke Li are on it too? Give it a look see. Liftoff! Spirit off the Apollo is out now on Anti Records.

There was plenty of new tracks/remixes/edit etc floating out there this week as well. I won’t go too in depth about them, but as always I’d suggest the Calvin Harris remix and probably the Times New Viking cover of The Arcade Fire as well. Enjoy! and stay warm ;)

Calvin Harris – “I’m Not Alone (See You At The Festival’s Remix)”

Times New Viking – “Neighborhood #1 (tunnels) (Arcade Fire Cover)”

Passion Pit – “Reeling”

The Arcade Fire – “Wake Up (Where The Wild Things Are Trailer Version”

Album Review: The Whitest Boy Alive, Rules

Posted in Audio, Music News, Music Reviews with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on Thursday, March 26, 2009 by Erik Burg

rules-coverOne of my most heavily anticipated albums of the year, Rules by the Whitest Boy Alive came as a welcome surprise. An album that didn’t break barriers for the group, yet comes across as one of the most polished and perfected albums so far in 2009. Much like it’s 2006 predecessor Dreams, this album has some of the best bass hooks and strategically placed synth keys I’ve heard on record.

The album plays off those two elements, from the beginning of each track, to the end. “Intentions,” one of my favorite tracks on the album, begins with ten or fifteen seconds of just keys, slowly building and gaining pace. As echoing and yet amazingly funk as the bass hook starting off “Time bomb,” the synths and bass parts really feed off each other and create an extremely mellow and immersive feeling for the listener.

Setting themselves apart from the other bands that try and do the same thing, Whitest Boy Alive possess one of the finest voices in all the music game. And mixed together with sparse guitar chords, the lyrics shine. The vocalist, Erland Oye, also a part of Kings of Convenience, has a certain aesthetic about him that reminds of me Jens Lekman. The music is stunning and powerful, but the vocals demand most of the energy whether to digest the uniqueness of it, or just to immerse yourself even deeper than the crazy instrumentals already take you.

I always see Whitest Boy Alive talked about as a dance group, but I’ve never understood it. Neither Dreams nor Rules have been over the top club bangers or anything of the sort, maybe it’s the calm vocals that bring the group down a notch, who knows. Sure there are heavy, and I mean heavy bass lines streaming across the entire album along with the synth as well, but I find myself tapping my toe along to it much more than jumping off the futon to cut some rug. I’ve always found Whitest Boy Alive to be calming, and beyond pleasing, perfect for any weather. Poignant lyrics to boot.

Rules has lived up to all hype I had for it, weary that it might not live up to the amazing Dreams, I can easily assure any fan of the first album that this one will blow you away. Culminating in one of the best singles of the year, “Islands,” the Whitest Boy Alive will surprise anybody out there looking to get into some new music. It’s a shame that these guys don’t receive more press, what they do is not only their own, but it’s mastered to a T.

Where The Wild Things Are trailer released; music by Arcade Fire, score by Karen O

Posted in News, Video with tags , , , , , on Wednesday, March 25, 2009 by Erik Burg

So this pretty much blew my mind, and turned a terrible day into a slightly displeasing one. I’ve been anxiously awaiting news from this movie, and for the release of course too, but I had not idea the news and trailer would be this amazing. So get your act together and watch the two minute trailer below. The video’s set to the beautiful (and slightly re-done) “Wake Up” by The Arcade Fire, and the film itself will be scored by the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s Karen O. Oh man, I’m foaming at the mouth over this. “There’s one in all of us”

Feel free to stream the new Peter, Bjorn, and John

Their new album, due out March 31st, is absolutely great. Peter, Bjorn, and John have really stepped up their game on Living Things, and I’m so happy to say so. I’ve been slightly disappointed by big releases from popular bands lately, but PBJ have not let me down in the least. So go check out their album and be sure to pick it up when the physical copy comes out. I’d suggest “Nothing to Worry About” or “Lay It Down”. Enjoy!

You, You’re Awesome makes awesome music

Posted in Downloads with tags , , , , on Monday, March 23, 2009 by Erik Burg

yyasuperheroYou, You’re Awesome are set to release an EP tomorrow, entitled “You’re My Superhero”. I hadn’t really heard of these guys until today, thanks to an awesome preview over at And Music Will Set You Free, but now I’m completely in love. You, You’re Awesome creates some amazing electro-pop music that utilize vocals a bit different from most other acts like this. And that’s what sets them apparent, though similar to some other stuff out there, these guys still remain unique. I love the piano over-lays, and the in-and-out styled composition. The sound feels like it drifts from near to far away, giving the listener a unique experience. These guys rock, so check them out, and be sure to grab their EP tomorrow. Enjoy!
