Hot Track: “Preservation”

Posted in Downloads with tags , , , , on Tuesday, January 13, 2009 by Erik Burg

I was first tipped off on this track by the fine people over at our Minnesota counterpart Culture Bully, and I couldn’t be thankful enough. As their article states, the beat from this Aesop Rock and Del the Funky Homosapian  collaboration is the foundation for the new Eminem track that’s recently leaked and been floating around the world of all things Marshall Mathers for a few weeks now. I’m not ready to give any new Eminem a listen to until it’s finished on the production line, so I’ll just get a quick word in on the beat instead. “Preservation” comes from some Wu-Tang material in 2005, but I’m just hearing it now for the first time. And if you’re in the same boat as I was and have enjoyed any past material from either of the artists you need to give this track a spin, I mean, it’s the only track that I’ve played in the last week from an artist without a fake name or mask (animal collective). The two collaborators work together perfectly and create a track that not only flows better vocally than 90% of rap out there, but the piano key sample in the background is absolute fire. Not much else to say about it, other than I highly suggest it for anybody interested in anything hip-hop. Until next time, enjoy!

Merriweather Post Pavillion Influence Mixtape

Posted in Downloads with tags , , , , on Monday, January 12, 2009 by Erik Burg

Wondering where Animal Collective got their ideas for one of the best albums released in the past few years? Maybe you just want to know what’s on Panda or Avey’s iPod? Well look no further friends, because an eight track Mixtape was recently released for your listening pleasure. Initially created for customers who pre-ordered the January 20th CD release of Merriweather, copys have been making their way around the web all day as recipiants of the “rare and limited” tapes have been spreading the word about how much AC apparently loves Erykah Badu.

I’m anxious to give this mix a listen to not only because I’ve heard of only a few names on the list but also because of the way AC draws upon so many different sources to create their amazing music. Too bad I’m stuck in class right now, but oh well. Maybe if I get ambitious I’ll get a review up, but for now I’ll let you be the judge.

Blu, “TilWeDie”

Here’s a new one from the cat known as Blu. This guy is going to be one of the emcees that you want to be looking for in the near future. He’s had a buzz about him in the underground circle for the last two years, and it’s well deserved because not many emcees work as hard as this guy does (next to Evidence I don’t think there really is anyone). This track has Blu molding himself to a track with beautiful strings and vocal samples. The thing that makes Blu different from a lot of emcees is that he can pretty much flow over anything that you throw at him.

Listen: TilWeDie

Also, if you haven’t done it yet go out and get Below the Heavens & Johnson & Jonson both of them are straight fire!

This guy is a monster on the mic and never disappoints when he is rhyming. Skillz also plans on making a video for the Rap Up so you know you better stay tuned for that because you know I will have that up when it’s out.

dilla-dj-set

This is a link to a live mix by the man known as DJ Concept, and he did this set live in NYC. This is a great collection of music from my idol and favorite artist J Dilla. This mix covers everything from the Pharcyde/Tribe Called Quest days all the way up to Ruff Draft and everything that was in between. J Dilla was an absolute genius,  and the impact that this man and his music have had on my life is remarkable.

If you are unfamiliar with Dilla please take a listen to this mix because it really is a great collection of tracks that Dilla was featured on and produced. At just under an hour long this mix will not disappoint.

I suggest them all, of course, so if you’re bored or just looking for some new material to get into give these a peek. Hope you all enjoy! xoxo Erik

What can I say about Tony Starks (AKA Ghostface Killah)? The guy has it all, he’s one of the greatest rappers in the history of the game, he is part of one of the most highly influential collectives in Hip-Hop history and now he has his own doll. Rhettmatic was nice enough to release this mix entitled 36 Deadly Darts: The Ghostface Doll Mix CD which has some of the classics that you have come to love by Ghost. These mix tapes were originally sold on the road with Rhettmatic (with an initial press of 1,000) and now they are being given away with the purchase of the Ghost doll.

You can go over to 4CAST Limited and buy the doll for a mere $299.99. Many of you may be thinking, “Why the fuck would I pay three hundred dollars for a doll?” It’s because this doll is made with the finest quality materials. Ghost’s chain and wristband are made out of pure 14kt gold. They truly saved the best for last, this doll has a built in voice unit that has Ghost himself delivering classic lines. The voice byte titles: “I put it in em shot up in em deadly venom”, “Ghostface, ghostface”, “Remember when i longed dicked you and broke your ovary”, “Yo bitch i fucked your friend ya you stank ho”. A young VanWyngarden on the right

A young VanWyngarden on the right

Some very interesting (old) new music has surfaced from one half of 2008 spotlight stealers MGMT. Andrew VanWyngarden, while attending Wesleyan University, had a class called Earth & Earth Sciences and he certainly did his very best to use his musical talents to pass the class. For some sort of presentation on the magical world of volcanoes, VanWyngarden wrote and performed a song called “Super Volcano” that sounds almost identical to some of the earlier MGMT releases out there; It’s easy to see how MGMT finally came about because this track exemplifies much of what they’re all about: over-the-top synths, floaty and imaginative vocals, and some hilarious (yet informative) lyrics. See the hilarious video for “The Youth” directed by none other than Eric Wareheim of Tim and Eric Great Awesome Show Great Job! fame below.

The track, considering its for an environmental science course, is surprisingly better than expected. It’s obviously nothing that would have made an album cut, but it makes for a delightful B-Side for a band that’s been all over the map this year. To be quite honest, the song sounds quite familiar of some older Of Montreal tracks, say…Satanic Panic era Kevin Barnes. If you fall head over heels in love with this cut though, you can find more from VanWyngarden and his first take a two man band called Glitter Penis here.

Now if only the burning hot lava from the super volcano could come and rescue all of us stuck in the miserable weather this week in Minnesota. It’s effing -35 right now!! anyway, ENJOY!

posHere is the first single “Goodbye” off of P.O.S.‘s new album Never Better which is due out on Rhymesayers Entertainment February 3rd. This album is the follow up to his sophomore effort Audition. From the sounds of this track (I love the beat) this album is going to be some hot material. This guy is amazing because he mixes Punk and Hip-Hop so fucking well.

Goodbye

Also Check out Stef on the Never Better Tour after the release of the album. Keep reading for dates… Continue reading
