The Roots’ tourbus crashes in Europe, Everyone is ok!

According to Okayplayer the Roots’ tour bus crashed last night in Paris. Thankfully everyone that was on the bus was ok. The thing about the situation is that the Roots’ European tour bus is a double decker bus and could have done some really serious damage. I’m glad to hear these guys are all okay, they are definitely innovators and legends, they need to stay around for a long time.

I don’t really need to say much more than that. You can read ?uestlove’s blog and recall of the situation here.

RJD2, The Simpsons?

I was very relieved to hear that one of my favorite producers, Ramble John Krohn (aka Rjd2), was back in the studio making more music. He had mentioned that his new album should be ready sometime around mid-2009 (although he doesn’t like to say things like that pre-emptively). I am really hoping that Rj goes back towards his Hip-Hop roots (Dead Ringer which was released to high critical acclaim) and stays away from the indie pop music. This guy is one of the most talented producers I’ve ever heard, and his music is simply beautiful.

I also found out that the Simpsons recently did a parody of the AMC show Mad Men (which is a Golden Globe winner) and they chose to use Rj’s track “A Beautiful Mine” off of the Magnificent City (which teamed RJ up with veteran Freestyle Fellowship emcee Aceyalone). When RJ was asked how he felt about the situation: “It’s really something when music you made in your basement for your own enjoyment ends up in places you never imagined it would.  You can tell they recreated the music for the show using orchestration and all live instruments, so that made it even cooler.”

Jurassic 5 EP being re-issued for 10th anniversary

It’s been 10 long years since Chali 2na, Akil, Mark 7even, Zaakir (Soup), Cut Chemist & DJ Nu Mark bust onto the hip-hop scene with their legendary Jurassic 5 EP. The Jurassic 5 EP was as close to a perfect record as you could get, hard hitting drums with great samples and absolutely amazing lyrics.

To celebrate the eleventh anniversary of this modern day classic, the EP is being re-released (it had been out of print since 2004) with additional bonus tracks (there are 29 tracks total on 2 discs), as well as a DVD with live performances, a documentary and the video for “Concrete Schoolyard”. I don’t know about you, but this package seems to have a great deal of added value here. For all of you die-hard J5 fans (I happen to be a pretty damn big one) this is a great item for you to add to the collection.jurassic5b1

Evidence & Alchemist, 6 projects in one year?

Well as I’ve repeatedly told you before, Evidence is one busy ass mother fucker. It seems as though the same can be said about his HIGH school friend Alchemist. Together they are releasing 6 different projects in the next year. I don’t know about you, but I think that’s mad ridiculous the work that these two are putting in, and I can’t wait to hear the fruits of their labor. Evidence already released the LAyover Mixtape, The LAyover EP is coming in less than 2 weeks (I can’t fucking wait). Alchemist has Alchemist’s Cookbook EP and Better Living Through Chemistry (which he claims he’s remade 5 times) due out in the next year. Alchemist also has a project with one of my favorite producing/emcees Oh No entitled Gangrene which should drop by the end of this year.

All of this work is ultimately leading up to the release of the album for their project Step Brothers next year, as well as Evidence’s follow up to the critically acclaimed Weatherman LP, Cats & Dogs. The song “So Fresh” off of the LAyover EP is the first official Step Brothers single. If you haven’t seen the video check it out below and make sure you get all this material coming out because it’s gonna be fresh.

Kanye West’s Head Gets Even Bigger?

Here is a quote that is directly from Mr. (Douche bag) West from an interview: “I realize that my place and position in history is that I will go down as the voice of this generation, of this decade, I will be the loudest voice,” he said in an interview on Wednesday. “It’s me settling into that position of just really accepting that it’s one thing to say you want to do it and it’s another thing to really end up being like Michael Jordan.”

I really feel sorry for the people that feel Kanye West really is the voice of this generation. I hate to think that anyone would think he was the Mike Jordan of Hip-Hop. I know a lot of you heads out there love this guy, but I simply cannot stand him. Dilla was a better producer than Kanye will ever be, Black Milk has way more talent that this egotistical fuck. You know I hate to say this, but I think the size of his ego has to do with a lot of the media and fans. There has literally been so little good main stream material that people just latch on to shit out there (i.e. Kanye, Lil’ Wayne) and they assume it to be great. There are so many artists out there in the Hip-Hop world that people have no idea about.

How can you go ahead and basically say that you are on your way to being the greatest beat maker or emcee when you’ve been in the game for 5 years? Anyone who wants to argue this I would be willing to debate with. I think that people really need to stop riding Kanye’s tight pants and his dumb ass hipster Hip-Hop music. This guy is turning the form of Hip-Hop into a hipster trend and it really bothers me. I remember a quote from one of Kanye’s tracks: ” I gotta apologize to Mos and Kweli…” he was talking about rhyming about jewelry, he needed to appologize for being an egotistical douche bag.

I have to let you all know, that this blog (as far as my posts are concerned) will be completely Kanye free, unless I can trash on him. I have to say I was a huge fan of College Dropout, and then his head got to big for his own good and I lost all interest in his music. I found out that there were other producers out there that were way better and didn’t need to tell the world how good they were to make a point.

(Note: The picture above is from Bonnaroo this year when Kanye put on the wackest show of his career and made constant excuses about how it wasn’t his fault.)

You can read the Blog post that he wrote about his reactions to Bonnaroo here, it’s actually quite comical as to how big of a baby he is. (On a side note I think it’s funny how he thinks that people are trying to “plot” his downfall.)

R.I.P. Mitch Mitchell

mitch-mitchell

I was very sorrowed to hear that Mitch Mitchell passed away yesterday November 12th. He was said to have died of natural causes. I know a lot of you realize that I am truly passionate about Hip-Hop, but my first real introduction into the music business was classic rock, shit my dad grew up on. I will always have an utmost respect for great rock groups, and the Hendrix Experience was nothing close to short of that. I honestly think that Mitch’s work was so pivotal with the Experience, that their sound wouldn’t be near what it was without him. I could say in my opinion Mitch was one of the top 10 drummers of all time without question. Mitch’s style of “lead” drumming pioneered the way for others like Ginger Baker (of Cream), and will never be forgotten.

Omar Rodriguez Lopez to release solo album on Stones Throw, WTF?

Posted in Music News with tags , , , on Tuesday, November 11, 2008 by Tim Althaus

omar1

Well it just seems like my favorite record label in the whole entire world keeps getting better and better. The same label that houses J Dilla, Madlib, MF Doom & Oh No (Stones Throw Records) will be releasing Omar Rodriguez’s new album Old Money on January 27th on compact disc and vinyl. The digital download is available now right here for $9.99. Stones Throw has a few artists on their label that are outside the genre of Hip-Hop that are very talented (Koushik, James Pants and now Omar). These artists are only going to help the label expand into other territories that they will probably also dominate. Old Money is Omar’s follow-up to his 2007 solo effort The Apocalypse Inside of An Orange, and promises to be a great album with influences ranging from Pink Floyd to Santana.

Omar has been a rather busy character with solo work as well as everything that he has done with the Mars Volta, and this album sounds like it might sound psychedelic yet very funky at the same time. I know I’m very interested to hear what Omar has up his sleeve because naturally I fucking love Stones Throw Records and I also love Volta.

Jake One: “Hurt U” (Featuring Pharoahe Monch & Kardinal Offishall)

I was really dissapointed when I initially heard that this track was going to be an iTunes bonus. I had gotten the deluxe (2 cd edition) of White Van Music (on Rhymesayers Entertainment) and listened to the shit out of it (I loved it). I then heard that there was a track floating around with Pharoahe Monch on it and I wanted to have it. Okayplayer made a post about it yesterday and I had to have a listen. Pharoahe and Kardinal Offishall pass this track like desert, taking a huge bite whenever it’s their turn to devour the mic. If you like vicious, fast paced rhymes then you will love this track. Also notice the guitar loop Jake has going on in the background, that shit’s sick…

Deftones bassist Chi Cheng in coma following car crash

Posted in Music News with tags , on Wednesday, November 5, 2008 by Ryan Buege

The Sacramento Bee reports that Deftones bassist Chi Cheng is in a coma in a San Jose hospital following a car accident in Santa Clara on Monday (November 3). It isn’t immediately clear what caused the crash or if anyone else was injured, but Cheng is currently listed as being in “serious, but stable condition”. Deftones vocalist Chino Moreno confirmed the accident today in a posting at the Deftones studio blog for their forthcoming album Eros:

“It deeply saddens me to inform you all that our brother Chi Cheng was involved in a terrible car accident [Monday] night. He is currently in a Northern California hospital in serious, but stable condition. I am on my way up north right now to be by his side, along with the rest of our bandmates and family. Chi is one of the strongest people I know, and I’m praying that his strength will get him through this. Please say a prayer for him as well.”

What’s even more disheartening is that apparently Cheng was leaving a memorial service for his older brother when his car was hit.. My thoughts are with Chi and his friends and family. Get better soon so that you can finish up that cd and get back out on the road to see us! You’re in our prayers man!
