When in Vegas? M!KEATTACK

Posted in Music News, News with tags , , , , , on Wednesday, June 13, 2012 by Eric Gilardi

People from the Midwest love to travel to the place they call Sin City and people from the Midwest have shown a love for the electronic music industry. That is why when in Las Vegas look no further than to
DJ M!KEATTACK for your dance party needs. If Las Vegas’s favorite DJ isn’t performing at one of the numerous night clubs he surely will direct you to where you need to be.

My first experience with M!KEATTACK came on my first trip to Vegas this last Christmas. My friend and I attended the Mord Fustang show at the House of Blues and were blown away by the second act of the night.
M!KEATTACK had an exonerating sound that released you from your everyday worries and told you that you were there to have a damn good time. His exuberant personality shines through his large smile and his technically large sound. After his set he joined the crowd and talked with fans, including myself. M!KEATTACK gave me his business card and told me to contact him whenever I was in Las Vegas so he could give me some electronic direction. For being a popular DJ who has gotten his credentials from coming up on the streets of Las Vegas he is a truly a genuine person. When I head to Las Vegas this September I will be looking him up because I want to know where the party is at and M!KEATTACK always knows where the party is at.

So when in Vegas, M!KEATTACK my friends.

The Ting Tings Sounds from Nowheresville Drops Tomorrow…

Again, here is the same old story with another band who had so much success from their debut album. How is your sophomore album going to be? For the duo from the UK, we can only hope that Sounds from Nowheresville is worth this long wait. The Ting Tings debut album We Started Nothing was released in May of 2008 and featured hits “That’s Not my Name”, “Great DJ” and “Shut Up and Let Me Go”. Katie White and Jules de Martino rode the success of the new album all the way to a nomination for Best New Artist at the 2010 Grammys.

Almost 4 years later we have arrived at the sophomore album so the name is fitting for the new album since we haven’t heard but a few glimpses off of it. The Ting Tings have been working on this album for a while and the few glimpses we have heard points in the direction that Sounds from Nowheresville will not disapoint. “Hands” was released in October of 2010 and is a catchy track that made its way onto the Fifa ’12 Soundtrack. That soundtrack I may add is one of the best sport games soundtracks of all time.

“Hang It Up” was released in October of last year on YouTube.

“Silence” is another track off of the new album and the remix was released on The Ting TingsVEVO last November. Even though it has taken the band almost 4 years they have leaked a few tracks so we can get excited about this new album. The album was released in the UK on February 27th and is due out March 13th in the US.

Soundset 2012 Announced!

Posted in Concert Dates, News with tags , , , , , , , , , , on Monday, March 5, 2012 by Tim Althaus

Sorry for the delay in my posting lately folks, but I’ve been swamped in my personal life. Anyways, I was at work today when I got about 3 different text messages pertaining to this year’s Soundset Festival in Shakopee, MN. Let me tell you right now, my heart dropped when I saw this lineup; it is utterly fantastic. I went to the initial reincarnation of Soundset in 2008, and it’s one of the best concerts I’ve ever been to. I also went in 2009, but I haven’t been back since because I wasn’t as enthused about the lineup as I had been in past years.

This year they have truly outdone themselves; I can’t even express how excited I am about this lineup. Some of the artists (just to name a few) include Atmosphere (as always), Aesop Rock, Evidence, Big K.R.I.T., Ghostface Killah & Raekwon, Danny Brown, DJ Premier, Kendrick Lamar, hometown heroes Audio Perm and more. Tickets will be on sale this Saturday, March 10th at 11AM, and I can assure you I will be picking up a VIP ticket stat. General admission is going to be $41, and VIP will be $90. I hope to see you all there!

Porter Robinson is 100% in this Bitch!

Posted in Music News, News with tags , , , , , , , on Sunday, March 4, 2012 by Eric Gilardi

About a month ago, I wrote an article about Erik Arbores, the 14-year old Dutch phenom, so I figure I better pay respect to the United States and honor a phenom of our own. All hail, the recent high school graduate out of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Porter Robinson! Porter is currently 19-years old and living large in the world of electronic music. He started producing music at the age of 12 using Sony ACID Pro and his recent success has him sharing the stage with the likes of Tiësto and Skrillex.

The North Carolina native is taking the nation by storm and in 2011 he busted his festival cherry by performing at Electric Daisy Carnival, Ultra Music Festival and Electric Zoo. Porter Robinson utilized all of his time in the spotlight to his advantage gaining enough popularity to catapult his debut EP Spitfire all the way to #1 on Beatport. The release of this EP actually crashed Beatport’s server.

It appears that Porter is 100% in this Bitch and that is good for everyone who enjoys electronic music. Why don’t you check out his track “100% in the Bitch” right here? Then go pay respect by visiting his SoundCloud.

Music Discovery: Nick Thayer, Like Boom EP

Posted in Music Discovery, Music News, News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , on Friday, February 24, 2012 by Eric Gilardi

Nick Thayer an Australian born DJ and Producer from Melbourne just dropped his Like Boom EP, less than a month ago, on February 7th, 2012. Sometimes it takes a little while for the sound to reach our ears all the way here in the United States from Australia but this is one DJ that you should not ignore. If you like original sounding electronica with many different levels and fun elements look no further. Nick Thayer best describes his music “as putting 7 glowsticks in a blender.”

Skrillex signed him to his record label OWSLA and his Like Boom EP is his first release since this signing. Skrillex was quoted saying, “Nick is one of the most versatile producers I know… taking everything from house to drum and bass to moombahton and putting his own forward-thinking spin on it. Not genre bound, just music bound.” Head over to Nick’s website and it will direct you to one of the many places you can take a listen.

The fun and funky track “Facepalm” will definitely get you dancing as he almost talks to you with his electronic hooks. This track is my favorite and within a minute you will know if you are down with Nick Thayer and what he has to offer your ears. In his track “Like Boom” featuring Wizard Sleeve and N’Fa he brings hip-hip into the electronic music world and for a change it actually works really well. Nick Thayer is someone that Skrillex discovered at a party while in Australia. Now, let MindInversion allow you to discover; Nick Thayer.

Yesterday the new track by the Gorillaz was released. This track is a funky rendition that utilizes its guest collaborators, James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem and Andre 3000, very well. It has the catchy sound of a classic LCD Soundsystem track with an added flow from Andre 3ooo to finish it off. The new track is available for download on converse.com(great marketing I may add) so if you like what you hear go on over and scoop this one up for free. Music Discovery: Kids These Days, Hard Times

Posted in Music Discovery, Music News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on Tuesday, February 21, 2012 by Eric Gilardi

The Chicago-based group Kids These Days is one of the reasons I always show up to a concert on time. While attending the SOJA show at the Cabooze this past Sunday night those God damn Kids These Days started off the night right. They only got to play a 4-track, 30-minute set and in that time you could tell that they made one hell of an impression on the crowd.

They had a total of 7 members on stage with so many different working elements. They combine the sound of jazz, blues, classic rock and hip-hop. The energy that they brought to the stage and their abilities to perform in such a way made it seem that they already have the difficult part down. These damn Kids These Days consist of; Macie Stewart on the keys and vocals, Nico Segal on the trumpet, J.P. Floyd on the trombone, Vic Mensa on the mic, Lane Beckstrom on the bass, Greg Landfair Jr. on the drums and Liam Cunningham on the guitar and vocals.

Before leaving the Cabooze on that night I had to stop by their merchandise table and pick up Hard Times. I suggest you check out Hard Times and if you happen to get a chance to see Kids These Days live, do yourself the favor. You will be drawn in by Macie’s voice in “Be (A Night in Tunisia),” Vic’s smooth flows in “Hard Times” will put a smile on your face, and you can never get bored watching the trumpet player Nico Segal. In his trumpet solo in “Summerscent”, Nico got down so hard I thought his face was literally, going to explode.

Here is their video for “Summerscent” and in this track you will get every element that this talented band brings to the table.

Killer Mike, “Big Beast” (Feat. Bun B, T.I. & Trouble) (Prod. By El-P)

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , on Thursday, February 16, 2012 by Tim Althaus

Something with El-P on production?  Yes, I am down.  Killer Mike, Bun B, T.I. & amp; Trouble, have gotten together with one of my favorite producers/rapper of the underground hip-hop scene (El-P) to create some music for the masses.  It is truly an interesting day when mainstream artists can collaborate with an underground king-pin such as El-p.  This has been done by artists before, but not to this extent in this music setting.  I am a fan of heavy beats, catchy samples, and nice word flow, and this song has it all, minus the fluff and hype.

“Hell Yeah” by dead prez is a prime example of collaborations of a different variety of stars from different sub-sets from different music styles.  I enjoyed that song when I first heard it; I was sort of surprised by the talent on the track.  It is amazing seeing artists reach out to different genres and music classes to create good music.  When the mainstream is lacking in talent, it is no surprise that they turn to true artists who still remain underground.  The underground scene has an abundance of creativity and a lack of ego, for the most part.  When artists like this come together they either come together, or they don’t come together.  This collaboration, and variety of artists fits nicely.

El-P is off the hook with his samples, and his jumpy anxious style beats.  It may not be traditional, but it is in your face and effective.

This song is the first song released off of Killer Mike and El-P’s  R.A.P. music album.  They did an album together, Holy Shit!  No surprise something interesting from El-p, no surprise a classic formula for good music was utilized to create this raw sound.  One can appreciate the classic bumping hip-hop sound, this beat makes you want to get on your feet.  I feel like I am listening to N.W.A.’s Straight Outta Compton again for the first time, when considering the beats and cuts within this track I am reminded of how hip-hop started and what it first sounded like.

When El-p is on production you can expect something different banging and original, as a classically trained jazz musician he is super solid on his sound.  When you add the grit-grimy sound of the Southern flow, and the mainstream aspect of Killer Mike, Bun B, T.I. you get something extremely out of the ordinary, but also groundbreaking in the respective mainstream.  Hearing this makes me wonder what the album will sound like.  I am excited to hear more.

If you dig El-p, or want to get into more of his music I would check out Fantastic Damage  and I’ll Sleep When You’re Dead.  A similar style is reflected upon in this track.  El-p’s sound is easily recognizable, and his collaborations are extensive.  He is a Beat Vet in my eyes.

All these serious cats together, its enough to make a hip-hop head smile.  It is a good day when it sounds smooth like butter and the lines that were are only a blur.  I can appreciate a champion putting out solid music to bob our heads to, but a motley crew of sorts and I am pumped.

To better and more diverse collaborations all around.  Cheers!

Tim’s Side Note: As Terry said, El-P and Killer Mike are going to be doing a full-length LP together, and I’ve known this for a while, but I had no idea what the outcome would sound like; this just might be my favorite track so far this year. The beat reminds me of a mixture that El-P arrived at from using a formula that combines Fantastic Damage & I’ll Sleep When You’re Dead. I can not wait for this album to hit shelves.

My favorite line and an instant Hip-Hop quotable from Bun B: “When you step out on the Ave, make sure they wanna see ya/cuz being Trill is an onomatopoeia.”
