Album Review: Brother Ali, Us

Posted in Music Reviews with tags , , , , , , on Wednesday, September 23, 2009 by Tim Althaus

20090727-bali It seems as though everything that Brother Ali touches turns to gold. Everything that this Twin Cities native has put out has been well above par. Earlier this year he dropped The Truth is Here EP, which was 9 straight tracks of sheer brilliance, and now he drops Us into the hands of the people. Much like everyone else is saying, I will agree that this is one of the best albums of this year. It has everything you’ve come to expect from a Brother Ali album: powerful production from Ant and legendary lyrics from Brother Ali. Ali is quickly on his way to becoming a legendary emcee, and Us is yet another nail in the pivotal coffin of truth. Brother Ali’s story telling abilities come alive like a beast in hibernation, and the outcome is simply stunning. Continue reading

BK-One x Parker Vision

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , on Wednesday, September 23, 2009 by Tim Althaus

After watching this video I can surely come to one conclusion. Radio Do Canibal is going to be a great, yet very interesting album. BK-One is an intelligent dude and you can tell he’s up on his shit. He discusses the music that inspired him to make this album, and the soundscapes you can expect to hear. Next he mentions how long he’s known Ali, and how long he’s been his tour DJ. BK also breaks down a few of the collaborations on the album, and how he loves bringing together legends on his album with the people he’s known and grown up with. On top of that, BK talks about the history of Rhymesayers and what they’ve been about the whole time.

Parker mentions DJ AM & Roc Raida and BK gives his thoughts about them, and how they’ve inspired him in what he does. He then shouts out Benzilla and talks a little bit about how the production was handled on the album. I can’t wait until this album drops, it’s going to be one of the most musically diverse albums to come out this year. Radio Do Canibal October 6th, get it.

Guilty Simpson, Phat Kat, Big Tone & DJ Graffiti x Splash!-Mag

Posted in Media, Video with tags , , , , , , , , , on Wednesday, September 23, 2009 by Tim Althaus

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Definitely a great thing to see coverage on Detroit Hip-Hop, it’s my favorite shit out there (no offense Minneapolis), no one is bringing a sound to the Midwest (with the exception of MPLS) like Dietroit. Splash!-Mag caught up with Guilty Simpson, Phat Kat, Big Tone & DJ Graffiti this year at the Splash! Festival. Big Tone talks about how it’s his first time over in Europe and what that experience is like. Phat Kat talks about his new album that he is finishing up, The Katacombs, and an album called Co-Still that he is working on with Elzhi (that’s what I like to hear).

Guilty grabs the mic and mentions his album with Madlib, says that the Random Axe project is just about done, and that he is also working on his second official release. He delves into the OJ Simpson album and talks a little bit about what you can expect to hear. I had heard something near catastrophic happened on the Random Axe project, and Guilty tells us that Black Milk did indeed lose a lot of the work associated with the album. Sean Price & Guilty Simpson had to re-record their vocals for the album.

There is so much more in this interview that is great, I mean it’s 20 minutes long. Take some notes from one of the best Hip-Hop cities in the country.

Shouts to 2DopeBoyz on the look.

KillahPriest_Elizabeth_Cover

I have to apologize for my posting (or lack there of) for the last couple days. School has hit full force, and I just don’t have as much time as I usually do. 2DopeBoyz posted the second leak off of KP’s upcoming album Elizabeth, “Murdah Murdah at Dawn”, the other day and I didn’t get a chance to post it right away. Priest is one of the best emcees in the game and I am really looking forward to hearing the new heat that he’s going to bring. Be sure to grab Elizabeth when you are out picking up Street Hop on October 20th.

Thanks to 2DopeBoyz we have yet another track from the always amazing Sean P! This track, “Top Rank”, is a promo for the upcoming Random Axe project with Black Milk & Guilty Simpson. No word yet as to when the Random Axe project will drop, but I can assure you that it’s going to be astronomical.

Brother Ali & Evidence Talk to Mr. Peter Parker @ Us Midnight Release

Posted in Media, Video with tags , , , , on Wednesday, September 23, 2009 by Tim Althaus

As many of you know, Brother Ali’s latest album Us dropped yesterday. If you haven’t bought it yet you should be pummeled to death, because it’s absolutely incredible. Ant’s puts forth some of the best beats I’ve ever heard him make, and Brother Ali’s rhymes are sure to move you.

Peter Parker had a chance to catch up with both of these emcees at Brother Ali’s midnight album release at Fifth Element. Brother Ali talks a lot about the new album and what it means to him. He also talks about BK-One’s new album coming out October 6th, Radio Do Canibal.

Parker got a pretty long interview with Evidence, and they discuss a wide variety of topics. EV discusses what it’s like to be a part of the Rhymesayers team, what it was like to lose AM (good friends), how his solo material is different than the Dilated material, Rakaa’s new album Crown of Thorns (February 2010), and the new Dilated Peoples album (Damn…). This is just one of the reasons I love Evidence the most, dude is humble and everything he says is on point.

Here is the second cut we’ve been able to hear off of BK-One’s new album with Benzilla, Rádio do Canibal. This track features The Hypnotic Brass Band, which is a 9 piece group out of Chicago. From what I’ve heard, this album sounds like it’s going to have some incredible beats. Pick that shit up on October 6th and support local music.

Kimbo

Good Lord, Sean Price has done it again. The artwork to this one looks pretty epic, and according to the post at 2DopeBoyz, this mixtape will be a prelude to the upcoming Mic Tyson project. It is going to be dropping on October 27th. You can expect to hear: The Boot Camp Clik, Royce Da 5’9″, Rock (of Heltah Skeltah), Ruste Juxx, Torae, Skyzoo & Poison Pen all rocking with Kimo Price. Don’t sleep on Sean P, you will regret it.
