Buried Inside

Nothing was really catching my eye as far as brand new metal media this week (..maybe I wasn’t looking hard enough?), so I’ve decided to dig back into my vault for this week’s Sunday Metal Minute. In addition to acknowledging my deep love of doom metal, this post serves to honor the date that Buried Inside hasscheduled w/ Battlefields at the 7th St. Entry on July 16th (which we announced earlier this week); download below and listen in to Buried Inside’s “Time As Imperialism” from 2004’s earth-shattering Chronoclast opus.

Besides the fact the the lineup is rounded out by a who’s-who of must-see local doom metal acts (Battlefields, Frontier, and Lungs), the appearance by Buried Inside alone will make this a metal show to sonically annihilate all other metal shows this summer, and I believe is pretty solid evidence.. Saturday Single: Walter Jones – “I’ll Keep On Loving You”

So for the past couple of months the team here at Mind Inversion have been brainstorming over different weekly columns that each of us will run. Ryan’s got his awesome ‘Sunday Metal Minute’ and Tim’s got his fantastic ‘Wildstyle Wednesday’. I’ve been hard-pressed to come up with anything decent for mine, so I had put it off for a while. But it dawned upon me tonight while I was listening to the new DFA single from Walter Jones that a weekly write up about the world of House and Electro music would be a great thing. I’ll dig into my back catalogue when I get a chance, but each week I’ll try and offer up some of the best new singles, remixes, and b-side releases. So here we go, week one… Thanks for reading this far, enjoy!

The newest edition to the DFA family, Walter Jones is a man of simplicity. In a world that’s been dominated by glitchy, chopped up electro music, house music has seen a strong revival within certain crowds. Artists and DJs like Walter Jones would be the reason for this strong movement, combining echoing feminine vocals reminiscent of recent Au Reviore Simone and Hercules & Love Affair releases along with poignant and perfect loops. The amazing bass kick in “I’ll Keep on Loving You” times out perfectly, not too fast, but not near deathly slow. Jones is able to reach a happy medium on all fronts of his music. It’s great for House enthusiasts who are particular about every little nuance on a track, but it’s able to satisfy the more relaxed listener who enjoys some vocal overlay instead of straight repetition. It’s a blend of genres that I have a fondness for, so it’s a great place to start ‘Saturday Single’. Those who know me well know that I’m a total DFA fanboy, but that aside, “I’ll Keep On Loving You” is a single slightly different from many of their larger full length releases, proving once again why Murphy, Goldsworthy, Sweeney and co. have some of the best ears for electro music of any styling. B-side “Living With Out Your Love” shouldn’t be forgotten about however. Again featuring the vocals that haunt even the biggest Silent Hill fans, this track feels exactly like what it is, a B-side. It’s unpolished, unfinished, and sadly forgotten. It’s house’s version of indie lo-fi, giving an old vinyl-like sound to a new mp3.

Concert Recap: Santigold, Amanda Blank, and Trouble Andrew @ First Avenue

There isn’t much that could be said about the lovable enthusiastic crowd-pleasing performance from Santigold at First Avenue this Thursday (May 28, 2009) that wasn’t recapped already. Santi’s main man Jon Jon (..same dude that got that extended shout out from the stage; seriously how’s she know know that well, man?) compiled a great list of links of people who have already reviewed the night, so I’m doing my best to bring something unique to you all.

As such, here’s my view from the night via video and photos, right from the middle of the dance floor; somewhat out of my element, I’ll just say that I was made to feel right at home amongst the flailing arms and sweat bodies by the time the show hit full stride. We’ll start things off with “Creator”, and get this MPLS internet dance party started like no other….

Album Review: Pacewon & Mr. Green, The Only Color That Matters Is Green

only green As I mentioned in the Cymarshall Law & Mr. Joeker review, I always seem to be sleeping on shit from the previous year and more often than not it catches up with me. Enter Pacewon & Mr. Green‘s The Only Color That Matters is Green. I remember hearing about this album more than once last year, and every time it was a positive note. This album is the definition of easy listening, because it takes little to no effort to enjoy. Mr. Green’s production is more than exemplary and Pacewon compliments just about every single beat on this album perfectly. Pacewon is a great emcee without spitting overly technical punchlines and metaphors, although he does have some catchy ass lines. These two compliment each other perfectly (Guru & Premier-esque?), and I hope to hear a lot more material from them. Continue reading →

Album Review: Method Man & Redman, Blackout! 2

blackout-2 The original Blackout! album came out 10 years ago, I picked that shit up when I was 12 years old, and I’ve been playing it ever since. To me Blackout! will always be a classic. Blackout! 2 has Method Man & Redman sticking to the same formula as an incredible two man duo with great production and witty ass rhymes. I am pretty surprised at how mediocre the reviews have been for this album because I personally think it’s an incredible album, and it should hold up as one of the contenders for album of the year. I could pretty much sum up this entire review with one mathematical equation: Method Man + Redman x DOPE beats = one hell of an album. Continue reading →

Bloodbath, “Hades Rising”. Parental Discretion Advised.

Put the kids to bed! My favorite brutal death metal album from 2008 finally has a music video to accompany it. Death metal’s most brutal supergroup Bloodbath, the prized subjects of our first ever post at Mind Inversion (bet you wouldn’t have guessed that!), is here with “Hades Rising”. If the insanely heavy antichristian blastfest at the start doesn’t scare you enough to make you turn to the next page in fear, then you’ll be in for a the treat of the beautifully cryptic outro to help refocus your mind.

My advice: either watch this thing in its entirety, or don’t watch it at all.

Concert Recap: Amebix, Misery, and War//Plague @ the Triple Rock Social Club

Last night (Wednesday, May 27, 2009), the legendary crust-punk innovators in Amebix played to an enthusiastic crowd of local Minneapolis punks, many of whom at been waiting to see the band for nearly 25 years. Suffice to say, it was the perfect choice to help celebrate the 15th Anniversary of Extreme Noise Records.

The Minneapolis natives and all around cool dudes in War//Plague and Misery kicked off the festivities with some straightforward crust-punk; both bands acknowledged that Amebix was now fulfilling a lifetime dream. I couldn’t agree with them more; it was simply an honor to be able to rock out with such influential musicians as a person who has grown to adore what they first pioneered. Even after 25 years apart, there’s no signs of age or inadequacy, as the songs were breathing with new life in front of the overly joyous packed house of crusties. And just to give credit where credits due, I believe Roy Mayorga (ex-Nausea, Thorn, Soulfly, Sepultura, etc.) must be commended for the thunderous backdrop he lays down for the band, as well; it was completely unexpected to see him behind the kit, but as the flying bodies proved, he definitely belonged there.

Slaughterhouse To Release Debut Album July 7th

slaughterhouse-missinfo It looks as though the most rhyme potent supergroup is going to be dropping their debut album on July 7th. Joell Ortiz, Crooked I, Royce Da 5’9″ & Joe Budden, also known as Slaughterhouse, are going to be putting out a full length album. According to the Hip Hop DX article I read, they wrote the album in six days. The production will be handled by Alchemist, DJ Khalil & Mr. Porter which means you are going to hear some sick beats at the very least.

I can assure you that this album is going to be well worth the hard earned money you work for. On a seperate tip, this might be one of the most lyrically enhanced albums you will hear for a long time. This is one album I am highly looking forward to, if you love Hip-Hop you should be to.

Hercules & Love Affair debut new material via mix cd

The art of the mixtape is far from dead. Whether you’re talking the thousands of hip-hop and rap artists trying to get their name out there or hype an album through this medium, or you’re chatting about the newest Fabric Live or Kitsune tapes, mix cds are not as dead as their 90’s origins. Come July 13 in fact, you’ll be able to get your hands on some awesome new Hercules and Love Affair material thanks to mastermind and coordinator Andrew Butler’s new mixtape.

Set to be released on Dance happy label Renaissance, the album will feature Andy Butler doing what he does best: DJing for two hours. Rats off to anybody who recognizes more than about five tracks on it, seeing as Butler has a taste for the obscure, bottom-of-the-crate house music. But I’ve got full faith in the man, after seeing him spin live and after hearing him on various podcasts, I know that the Hercules front man can deliver some of the best in the last few decade’s dance music.

Andrew Butler will be the test case for this mix series as well, entitled Sidetracked. Though it’s a concept that various labels and outlets have been exploring lately, Sidetracked looks to be another promising medium for artists to show that they’re into music other than their own. So be sure to check out the album when it hits shelves July 13.

Vivian Girls supporting 7-inch with “Moped Girls” video

You know, I don’t know why I’m on such a music video kick this week, but maybe it’s just that there’s where more music videos coming out this summer that are worthy of my attention than usual. While I’m reminsicing of my time spent in front of the TV as a youth, absorbing any and all videos coming for late night MTV2, I won’t slow down; Vivian Girls have posted a video for the new track “Moped Girls” from their new 7 inch on Rough Trade (the same cats who are also peddling the new “Get Over It” 7-inch from our local favorites in Solid Gold) which is limited to 1000 copies; grab it now while they’re still cheap. Additionally, the vinyl will contain a b-side track called “Death”, and you can pick this up over at Rough Trade’s website.
