Mastodon unveil music video for “Oblivion”

Mastodon continues to impress with their spacey music video for “Oblivion” from the new album Crack the Skye, their third video helmed by psychedelic guru Roboshobo. Truthfully, their partnership seems to be paying off, because the man(?) has been able to consistently accomplish the seemingly impossible task of creating a visual document that accurately translates the incredibly visual auditory experience of Mastodon’s music. If Mastodon’s Crack the Skye concept movie really does take shape, we can be sure that Roboshobo will deliver with one of his own picture perfect interpretations if he’s the one behind it…

Mos Def Performs “Quiet Dog” on Letterman

Mos Def’s new album The Ecstatic dropped today and I’m hoping that all of you went out there and copped it, because I took one listen and it’s impressive (review later this week). This is a dope video, and it illustrates how dope of an emcee Cymarshall Law really is. This guy can freestyle like fucking crazy and he’s damn good at it. He also performs a verse off of the track “Sticks & Stones” off of his LP with Mr. Joeker, Hip-Hop in the Soul. If you haven’t gotten Cymar’s album with Mr. Joeker, SHAME ON YOU!

Finale Gives Some “Paid Homage” To Dilla

I’m so glad that 2DopeBoyz had this leak today. This track, “Paid Homage”, is probably my favorite track off of Finale‘s debut album A Pipe Dream And A Promise. It contains a bomb ass beat done by Flying Lotus, which was originally FlyLo’s tribute to Jay Dee’s beat on the Slum Village track “Fall In Love”. Make sure you check this one out, Finale shows respect to the late and very great  J Dilla in classic fashion.

Toki Wright releases Rhymesayers debut today; Fifth Element in-store at 6pm

Northern Oupost, Episode 11, Summer 2009: The Falcon Arrow

Not too long ago, Minneapolis art-rock duo The Falcon Arrow stopped by the Owl Recording Studio to record an interview and in studio performance for the best TC-based multiple camera music show to ever grace web, and on Friday (June 5) their feature was released for public consumption as Northern Outpost‘s 11th episode. This episode proved to be one of my favorites so far, with a candid interview that emphasized some of the struggles of being an independent band in a city that’s already crowded many good ones and one of the most inventive music sets that’s been showcased yet. Through its sparse rhythm-only arrangement, the music of The Falcon Arrow is far removed from the style of post-rock that many of you are used to, yet it still possesses the same entrancing buildups and soothing come-downs that define the genre’s greatest moments. I pressed play not expecting more than a simple indie rock band, and when the replay screen finally came up I was still trying to comprehend how the looping bass of Matt Reintz was able to produce such a beautiful racket..

In two weeks Northern Outpost will be back with Episode 12 with Speed’s The Name, and I’m very excited to see that my buds in Empires will be showcasing their epic, ethereal doom metal for Episode 13. If you enjoy the highest quality music the Twin Cities have to offer, it looks like Max Becker and Northern Outpost have a stellar summer lineup in store for you. Stay tuned to find else what else is on the horizon…

Is anyone as excited to bike over to Electric Fetus tomorrow to pick up Sonic Youth‘s The Eternal as I am? I highly doubt it…

As part of the media blitz for the album release, Sonic Youth seems to have taken up a residency at Pitchfork.tv for the week. Today, things kick off with the band playing two brand news songs, “Antenna” and “Sacred Trickster”, live in the extremely intimate (aka cramped and confined) filming studio for the low-budget A>D>D series…

The Juan Maclean remix “No You Girls” for the awesome new Franz Ferdinand album

Though Tonight: Franz Ferdinand was as mediocre as album releases get, and despite my high hopes for it, there were certain songs that still made me tap my toe. Namely “No You Girls”.  You know, the one on the iPod commercial. Anyway, Franz Ferdinand was apparently just as unhappy with the album as I was, so they gave it another try…

… Blood: Franz Ferdinand is a track-by-track dubbed-up, electro-exploding remix of Tonight: The album was redone by the band themselves, but there were a few extra cracks at “No You Girls”. There was a Blood: version, now called “Katherine Hit Me”, but in addition to that The Juan Maclean, Vince Clarke, and Trentmoller also remixed the already dance floor single. I’ll of course be hyping up all 8 and a half minutes of the Juan Maclean mix, but the original that Franz did is actually just as stellar. 

The Juan version though is a sprawling reverb heaven. With thousands of vocal over-and-overs, and synthesizers that build to more space themed synths, the track feels at home in the ever growing DFA catalogue. The vocals are right in line with Juan’s material lately, the hap-hazardly-hearted themes, the laughable heartbreak, and so on. The music construction of the song, the Juan production, is simply amazing. It builds, it fades, it blasts. The perfect formula for a remix, a trick that’s usually missed my most remixes. Instead of just trading in the essence of “No You Girls” for Justice-esque noise, The Juan instead carefully edits, manipulates and reconstructs an already fun single into an epic post-disco masterpiece. Bask in it’s greatness people. Or just passively listen, either will work. Enjoy!

Black Milk Talks About Cam’ron Using The Same Sample

As many of you out there know, Black Milk’s track “Losing Out” contains an incredible sample and it was one of the best tracks on last year’s Tronic. Apparently Cam’ron has a new track utilizes same sample. I’m going to go out on a short limb and say that Black Milk’s version stomps on Cam’ron & Jada’s but you guys can be the judge of that.
