mewithoutYou, the Dear Hunter, and Kay Kay and His Weathered Underground have just released all their upcoming U.S. tour dates, and they plan to stop at Station 4 in St. Paul on July 2nd. With a new album called it’s all crazy! it’s all false! it’s all a dream! it’s alright due out on 5/19, it’s about due time for you to catch yourself up with this band of experimental indie rock misfits. I personally can’t remember seeing this band since they were supporting [A -> B] Life at the Warehouse in La Crosse years ago (..I know Hiz won’t forget that show, either, but I can’t recall who else played for the life of me), and the evolution they’ve gone through since I touched base with them last are pretty amazing. Although it’s still the same band I recall from the debut, the last album Brother, Sister was a matured, refined, improved, and focused mewithoutYou. Admittedly, hearing it the first time made me embarrassed I ever stopped paying attention to them. The Dear Hunter and Kay Kay ain’t bad either, so I’m glad I’ve finally got a chance to reinitiate myself into their following.

89.3 The Current announces Decemberists, Yeasayer, and more for Rock the Garden ’09

On Saturday, June 20th, the grassy amphitheater lawn of the Walker Arts Center will once again become the finest concert hall in the city for one night only. In their yearly Rock the Garden Festival, MPR’s 89.3 The Current and the Walker Art Center have teamed up to put together another envious lineup of independent rock that will be anchored by a headline performance from The Decemberists, currently supporting their new album The Hazards of Love. Other performances will come from Calexico and Mind Inversion favorites Yeasayer and Solid Gold, so it’s going to be an evening of amazement from start to finish. Also, it’s an all ages event and they promise some awesome food and refreshments throughout the day, so there’s really no reason not to bring entire gang out for a night of fun.

Tickets go on sale to the general public on April 22nd, but if you’re an MPR or Walker member you can order now!

The Body Beneath releasing Rise of the Insidious with two shows this weekend

It’s not talked about nearly enough, but the Twin Cities have truly been a hotbed for some incredible technical death metal bands over the course of the last several years. Last year The Crinn were able to secure a recording deal with Nuclear Blast, earlier this year Iron Thrones self-released a new album to a national audience, and now the brutal death metal quintet known as The Body Beneath is poised to release a brand new EP of savage, shredding, blast-beat laden progressive death metal insanity. Rise of the Insidious is receiving a April 4th release via The Fifth Moon, and to support the release, The Body Beneath with be playing two shows – one at Station 4 on Friday and another at The Rox in St. Cloud on Saturday.

Rise of the Insidious is the first time that we’ve heard from The Body Beneath since their 2007 album Compelled to Suffer. Having now evolved far beyond being simply a With Dead Hands Rising off-shoot, The Body Beneath is sounding extremely confident and more capable than ever. Any hardcore influences are hard to detect on the preview tracks from Rise that are posted over at the band’s MySpace; instead its more of an onslaught of the most brutal sounds, taking cues from heavyweights like Hate Eternal, Krisiun, and Aborted. “Crushing all who oppose” is this band’s motto, and it’s an apt one. Really folks, this is some brutal metal!

Vampire Hands and Daughters of the Sun both stream new songs

Local music fans look to be poised for one amazing year of psychedelic rock; within the fast few weeks, both Vampire Hands and Daughters of the Sun have uploaded new music from their forthcoming releases.

Vampire Hands are kind enough to present their listeners with two entire tracks streaming on their MySpace page for their soon-to-be-released Hannah in the Mansion full-length album. As someone who endlessly enjoyed the low-key psych rock of last year’s Me and You Cherry Red, this release is on my highly anticipated list; hearing these new songs hasn’t dampened my expectations at all. “Funny Stories” is a smoky, dark, sneering pop rock song that seasoned fans will be sure to appreciate, and “Invisible Stairs” is a new adaptation for VH – noisy, heavily layered orchestration and sound effects that retains their folksy charm but sees them progressing noticeably. Head to their site to listen in, and keep returning to Mind Inversion to see when we can expect an official release for Hannah in the Mansion!

Daughters of the Sun is a Minneapolis band that embraces psychedelia to an even more noticeable degree, and now their MySpace page is now hosting an excerpt of “The Long Way”, an extremely ethereal and meditative mirage of sound from the bands new album Ring that helped transport this listener to another dimension. Truthfully, the hallucinogenic rhythms and enchanting vocals are sure to only be a small precursor of epic noise adventure that is about to be released. Listen to Big Business’ Mind the Drift; U.S. tour scheduled

Well, the hard rock heavies in Big Business were able to get a break from the road in November, and after finishing the vocals in LA, the new album Mind the Drift was mixed is now ready for public consumption! After releasing the physical copies TODAY, Big Business have posted their entire new album for streaming listening online at their website! Head over to mindthedrift.com to hear the latest.

Also, it’s no secret that Big Business is a band that likes to tour. In fact, recording on their upcoming album had to be postponed for nearly half a year last year when the Melvins invited the band back out on tour. Northern Outpost Ep. 7, Military Special performs and interviewed

Northern Outpost, the Max Becker created local music interview and performance online TV show, is back for their seventh episode. This week their featuring the Minneapolis-based spontaneous electro-rocking clan of Military Special who have just released their new album Civil Union. On this week’s show from Uptown’s Owl Recording, we get to hear about they band’s growth on Civil Union, what they enjoy about playing locally, and their take on the longevity of the high quality local indie rock scene that they are now a part of. Metal A/V Roundup: Slayer, Isis, Glorior Belli, Converge and more

The thrash legends in Slayer have planned to issue their newest song, “Pyscopathy Red”, as a 7″ vinyl release as part of the annual Record Store Day on April 18th! Only 5,000 of these limited edition blood-red vinyl 7-inch vinyls will be made available, the first sounds that were recorded in a Los Angeles studio last October for Slayer’s forthcoming untitled full-length record of back-to-basics RiB thrash. So don’t forget to get out to support Record Store Day on April 18 and listen to the new “Psychopathy Red” online now while you wait. The list of participating stores is here.

Anyone who knows me well, knows that I’m a total Isis nut. I’m following the release of Wavering Radiant closely (and not allowing myself to listen to a leak until its sent to my doorstep), and have been anticipating every minute. The new song “20 Minutes / 40 Years” has me confident that this album tops their most recent ouput, and now they’ve got a new in studio video that making me just itch when I wonder if it’s true. The clip sounds more like House of Low Culture than Isis, but it serves to prove that the band has only further fell in love with their art of heady psychedelics.

French black metallers Glorior Belli just announced the release of their next album, Meet Us of the Southern Sign last week, and now they have graced us with a new track of aural psychosis entitled “In Every Grief – Stricken Blues”. Taking a page from the book of Opeth, they play one of the more alluring adaptations from black metal that I’ve heard recently; a far different approach than much of the very raw BM that has been predominant the last few years. This song is a slow, gorgeous, heavily-layered buildup (with clean vocals!) rather than the blasting chaos you might expect, and could find a welcome audience outside BM in the same way that their fellow Frenchmen in Gojira have found crossover appeal outside of death metal. Give it a listen at MetalKult, and don’t forget to catch them on tour at Station 4 with Absu in June!

Finally, we are at the end of March, and the time has come for me to put the closing bell on the Mind Inversion tribute to the recently popular Facebook meme on your most influential albums. I’ll have you know that, like most lists I make, the albums for this list were brainstormed rather quickly, and I think that’s a good thing. If an album were actually as influential as I thought, their importance should be fairly easy for me to recall. Truthfully, I’ve never really become too embarrassed about any album that I own; sure, I may have made some questionable choices in my youngest years, but somehow I’ve always seemed to have a remarkably good bullshit detector when it comes to music. What follows is a journey through the albums that had the biggest impact on forming my tastes and such over the years. If you really love the music I post about, read on for a brief reverse-chronological (moreorless) recounting of my most influential albums. For better or worse, I’ve written them out as haikus for your enjoyment!

Sunday Metal Minute: Khanate, “Wings From Spine”

Some thought the songs on Khanate‘s Clean Hands Go Foul would never see the never see the light of day, but thankfully Aaron Turner and Hydrahead have given this epic band’s third album a proper posthumous unveiling on their label. The album, recorded in 2006, is a torturous collection of the most abstract, dissonant, and ugly avant-doom known to man; there isn’t another band in the world that could make music this somber and tragic. “Wings From Spine” is the lead track from this depressing (in a good way!) finale from Khanate, introducing the unpredictable dirge and bleak ambience of the album with little subtlety. Substance’s Jim Forrey interviewed by Cake In 15 about Manifestation

As I discussed earlier this month, Substance is making their “official” introduction as an organization tomorrow night, Friday March 27th, with the Manifestation concert at First Ave. In anticipation of the show, the guys at Cake in 15 were able to talk to Substance co-founder Jim Morrey to get the low-down on what Substance is all about. Read it all here!

“The word “manifestation” shares a root with “manifestazioni”, the Italian word for “protest”. Both come from the Latin ”manifestus”, literally, “struck by the hand”, as in, “to forge” or “to make known”. It is an apt title for the second show put on by Substance, a non-profit booking and promotions company with a mission to blend the audiences of music and progressive political issues. Their first concert was the Ripple Effect concert during the Republican National Convention which garnered attention when Rage Against The Machine went out into the crowd to play after being told by the authorities to shut down.

Providence, R.I. rapper Sage Francis headlines Manifestation in the First Avenue Mainroom this Friday 3/27, with support from Cecil Otter, B. Dolan, Building Better Bombs and The God Damn Doo Wop Band. Beyond the music, expect lots of groups to have information and a “Manifest Station”, a networking hub for progressive issues. Cake In 15 caught up with Substance co-founder Jim Forrey to talk about civil disobedience, accumulating debt and the value of art.”
