Jadakiss, Ghostface & Reakwon? Get the hell out…

Posted in Downloads, Media with tags , , , , , on Tuesday, March 31, 2009 by Tim Althaus

jadakiss1 I started seeing this track everywhere and I had to put something up about it, because it is just that good. I’ve been feeling Jadakiss since his days back in The Lox with Sheek and Styles. His last album, Kiss of Death was a raw ass record and I still bump that shit hard to this day. I don’t even really need to give introductions for Ghostface or Raekwon, so you can imagine just how sick this track is.

The track is called “Cartel Gathering”, and the beat is pretty much ridiculous. All of these emcees showcase their top effort, and Ghost is the first to take off, “Don’t be afraid of the New York Street talk/I switch gear all day bro, like you do in your peach Porsche”. Rae follows suit very nicely, “…That was the 90’s/Chef era take over America/bag Ugly Betty up and make her Ms. Ferrera”. Continue reading

P.Y.T.s get on the floor

Posted in Audio, Downloads with tags , , , , , , on Saturday, March 28, 2009 by Erik Burg

So I stumbled upon this guy tonight. Kind of  REALLY makes me smile. I’ve got a soft spot in my hear for Michael Jackson, so anytime this guy gets a remix or something of the sort I usually check it out. This edit of the demo version of P.Y.T. is one of the finer and more well done mixes I’ve heard of the King of Pop. It feels a lot more laid back than the original, almost like some sort of Larry Levan edit. Either way it’s awesome, and I’m glad I found it. Hope you feel the same way, Enjoy!

Why is it so cold still?!

Posted in Audio, Downloads, Music News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , on Friday, March 27, 2009 by Erik Burg

Oh man, I’m so sick of this weather. I’m praying for the day when I can just open my window and enjoy some fresh air without having to look outside and see it snowing. So I’ve pretty much become a total recluse again this week, avoiding the said cold, and reading the internets all day ‘n night (sorry, can’t get that song out my head). Sad for me, but good for you. I’ve uncovered and gathered some of this week’s highlights in the music world. Video, mp3s, etc. So curl up by the fireplace, and Enjoy!

Starting things off is the video for the new Juan Maclean track “One Day.” This track has come as somewhat of a surprise to me after hearing the first two singles off the album run around the ten minute mark each; thinking that The Juan would revert to more 12″ mix type material, “One Day” has more of a pop track than anything else I’ve heard. The track also focuses heavily on Nancy Whang’s vocals, something that has drawn me towards the album ever since it’s inception. “One Day” doesn’t amaze me, but it’s good, and I can’t wait to hear the full album. From The Future Will Come due out April 21st 2009 on DFA Records.

Next is the video to the stellar N.A.S.A. track “Gifted.” For all of you who haven’t heard the album yet, I’d suggest checking it out. There’s a lot to like about the album, its features everyone from Tom Waits to Ol’ Dirty Bastard, but “Gifted” features the heavyweight of them all: Kanye West. Though I’m not a huge fan and his first verse on here sort of upsets me, (no Kanye, people wore tight pants before you did) I do enjoy the track. Oh yeah, and did i mention Santogold and Lykke Li are on it too? Give it a look see. Liftoff! Spirit off the Apollo is out now on Anti Records.

There was plenty of new tracks/remixes/edit etc floating out there this week as well. I won’t go too in depth about them, but as always I’d suggest the Calvin Harris remix and probably the Times New Viking cover of The Arcade Fire as well. Enjoy! and stay warm ;)

Calvin Harris – “I’m Not Alone (See You At The Festival’s Remix)”

Times New Viking – “Neighborhood #1 (tunnels) (Arcade Fire Cover)”

Passion Pit – “Reeling”

The Arcade Fire – “Wake Up (Where The Wild Things Are Trailer Version”

Black Blondie introduces debut album Do You Remember..? with a tune

Black BlondieDisplaying an elegance and savvy soulfulness of a band wise beyond their years, it’s hard to believe that Black Blondie are only now making the announcement for what they consider to be their “debut”. The local fourpiece has been earning respect and acclaim both locally and nationally over the past few years for their danceable, experimental style of gritty, soul, pop, hip-hop and R&B; they’ve been tapped to open for everyone from the Roots to Jill Scott to K’naan to Amy Winehouse (as well as participated in countless much smaller local gigs) and even appeared on URB‘s shortlist of artists to watch out for in the Mar/Apr 2008 issue. Now, thanks to City Pages Gimme Noise, we’re aware that the group has scheduled an April 14th release for their first official LP, Do You Remember Who You Wanted To Be? The time couldn’t be better for them to release this, and from the sounds of the sample that they provided, “Candy Cigarettes”, they’re not holding anything back. As strong and powerful as it is soothing, the vocal combination of Black Blondie’s Samahra and Channy Moon Casselle from Roma di Luna is a something to be commended. Indeed, it’s a haunting mood they’ve created on this song, and I’m grooving on it; I can’t wait to hear more when the release comes April 14th and I’m sure many longtime Black Blondie fans are thinking the same thing.

Dredg resurfaces with “Saviour” from new album

DredgThese days, waiting 4 years between albums is basically the equivalent to a lifetime, and maybe that’s why it seems like Dredg basically disappeared from the face of the earth after they releaseed 2005’s Catch Without Arms. The growth that Dredg showed from their earlier releases to CWA was something quite remarkable (which may be why I didn’t appreciate it as much upon its initial release), and given 4 more years of growth, one couldn’t be very sure what to expect from Dredg’s forthcoming album The Pariah, the Parrot, the Delusion. Well, the time is soon coming for the release of the entire album – which is good, considering Dredg’s conceptual tendencies – but for now they have treated us to a new track! “Saviour” is an off-time, poppy, progressive rocker that combines both the upbeat, catchy charm of Catch Without Arms with the dirty, heady, psychedelic rock that Dredg perfected on Leitmotif. Personally, I’m still interested in hearing the somber experimentation they displayed on el Cielo, but if they’ve moved on, I guess I can try to move on with them. Listen for yourself:

UPDATE: File has been removed after request from WMG/Independent Label Group. Hopefully we’ll hear it again soon.

UPDATE 2!! After some pestering, they led me to Dredg AbsolutePunk.net profile, where they are currently streaming “Saviour”! Head over there to listen to this new jam from Dredg’s forthcoming album.

Keep reading for a full listing of Dredg’s spring tour dates, including a stop at the Varsity Theater in Minneapolis with Torche and From Monument to Masses! Continue reading

Black Milk is having “Dreams”

Posted in Downloads with tags , , , , on Monday, March 23, 2009 by Tim Althaus

artist_blackmilk-realdMan it seems like the year that Black Milk has been having can only happen in a dream. He released (in my opinion) the best album of last year, and is coming out with more deadly venom this year with a wide array of projects (Random-Axe, Tracks on the new Slum Village, working with KRS on a track).

This track “Dreams” is a web exclusive that Black Milk released and it sounds much like anything else he has done in the past, fire as hell. The beat starts out with a hard hitting bass to snare and fades to a nice piano and synth loop. Continue reading

Cymarshall Law & Elzhi Are on a “Bullet Train”

Posted in Downloads with tags , , , on Monday, March 23, 2009 by Tim Althaus

cymar-law This gem has been sitting in my inbox for a few days because I haven’t had the time to get it on the blog because of school issues. I am glad that I finally have time to get this up because it features two of the illest emcees in the game right now. “Bullet Train” is a track by Cymarshall Law, and it features the always flame throwing Elzhi and the female emcee Masia One.

If you haven’t heard of Elzhi or Cymarshall Law you really need to do yourself a favor and jump on the bandwagon. They put out two of the best albums of last year with no question and they have some of the best flow and rhymes that you will ever here. It seems like they are both able to make any beat they are given and make it their home.  Elzhi really kills the beat, “I steamroll your team whole/get your whole dream stole/then take my supreme role as an extreme goal/I been in my zone chattin’ on an iPhone with a chick twistin’ up trees like a cyclone”. Masia One and Cymarshall Law follow in the same line and kill this hard hitting synth beat. If you like good rhymes do yourself a favor and download this one, you will be very dissapointed if you don’t.

You, You’re Awesome makes awesome music

Posted in Downloads with tags , , , , on Monday, March 23, 2009 by Erik Burg

yyasuperheroYou, You’re Awesome are set to release an EP tomorrow, entitled “You’re My Superhero”. I hadn’t really heard of these guys until today, thanks to an awesome preview over at And Music Will Set You Free, but now I’m completely in love. You, You’re Awesome creates some amazing electro-pop music that utilize vocals a bit different from most other acts like this. And that’s what sets them apparent, though similar to some other stuff out there, these guys still remain unique. I love the piano over-lays, and the in-and-out styled composition. The sound feels like it drifts from near to far away, giving the listener a unique experience. These guys rock, so check them out, and be sure to grab their EP tomorrow. Enjoy!

Ghostface and Doom team up for new GTA

Posted in Audio, Downloads, Music News with tags , , , , , , , on Sunday, March 15, 2009 by Erik Burg

The theme track for the new Grand Theft Auto game, coming out March 17th for the Nintendo DS, features two hip-hop heavyweights. ghost-and-doomGhostface Killah and Doom tag-team this Oh No produced track, once again showing why the GTA series leads the gaming industry in its soundtracks and original music. Titled “Chinatown Wars”, the track has a bit of a far eastern feel to the production and beat throughout the track, obviously tailored to fit the game. The two rappers switch off verses, with Ghostface starting and Doom really steals the show with his first verse, just as the song really settles into it’s own. It’s certainly worth checking out, the game and the song of course. Enjoy!
