Nodfactor.com sat down with the mad chemist himself and talked about his upcoming projects. Alchemist talks about his upcoming solo effort Chemical Warfare (July 7th), and he gives us a little bit of insight as to what kind of guests we can expect. He also talks about production vs. rhyming. After Chemical Warfare he talks about his collaborative effort with Oh No which is entitled Gangrene (I’m going crazy waiting for it to drop), and how the process worked between himself and Oh No. He also talks a little bit about his group project, Step Brothers, with Evidence and gives us some insight into their chemistry. I am telling you personally that Gangrene and Step Brothers are two of my most highly anticipated projects in a long while.

Posted in Audio, Saturday Single, Video with tags braxx, clap rules, download, live, mp3, never half step, old sequencer, Saturday Single, tiny sticks, Video, vinyl on Saturday, June 20, 2009 by Erik BurgIn this week’s installment of the ever popular Saturday Single column, I’ll be reporting on the sterling new debut release on Tiny Sticks by three part electro duo Clap Rules. You might recognize the Tiny Sticks name if you read my interview with Cage & Aviary earlier this week, as they are set to release a 12″ later this year on the label as well. But newcomers Clap Rules are in the mix this week thanks to the awesome Old Sequencer single.
Clap Rules – Old Sequencer Tiny Sticks Records iTunes/Vinyl

Clap Rules feels a lot like other material on Tiny Sticks, too (the face on the cover makes me feel right at home as well). Which is beyond stellar, seeing as some of my favorite electronic acts hail from the label (Mock & Toof especially). The titled A Side is a tight mix of disco influenced bass with a high pitched synth loop, changing ever-so-slightly throughout “Old Sequencer”. There’s live guitar to boot, making the track nearly perfect as a blend of live instrumentation and modern day house fanaticism. It’s funky, it’s groovy, it’s the future. As Juan Maclean said earlier this year: The Future Has Come. “Old Sequencer” is perfectly produced, as each looping section never gets old, and although the pace for the song never really leaves a certain BPM, the song still feels like it builds to a beautiful crescendo. The B Sides, “Never Half Step” and “Braxx” both sound amazing. Again drawing on deep house roots, the two songs make for great additions to the single. “Braxx” is probably the better of the two. The track adds some almost Simian Mobile Disco-like synth pulses to the bass line, making the track feel slightly more upbeat than “Old Sequencer”. It’s hard for me to not over-praise an album, and especially if it’s music like this. Deep house, post disco, electro fucking rock and roll (can you tell by the cursing that I’m excited?). Clap Rules is worth way more than a download, and worth way more than my amateur rambling, so I’ll stop. For a debut it’s incredible, and I can’t wait to hear more.

Talib Kweli & Hi-Tek on Black Star, Being Good
Posted in Media, Video with tags Black Star, Hi-Tek, Reflection Eternal, Talib Kweli on Friday, June 19, 2009 by Tim AlthausHere is a great video interview with Hi-Tek & Talib Kweli. Pyramid West had the chance to catch up with Reflection after one of their recent shows. Kwe & Tek reflect on the original Black Star album and what the recording process was like for that album. It really surprises me that they only made those cuts for that album, they didn’t do any extra tracks at all (that’s fucking impressive). Kweli talks about what it takes to be a good emcee, and Hi-Tek talks about what he thinks it takes to be a good producer.

Oh No & Alchemist are “Under Siege”
Posted in Media, Video with tags Alchemist, Gangrene, Oh No on Thursday, June 18, 2009 by Tim AlthausVodpod videos no longer available.
Thank god the first single is finally here. This track is off of Alchemist & Oh No’s project together known as Gangrene. I have been waiting for this project since I heard about the shit over a year ago. This album is really going to make a lot of heads turn when it drops. The beat in the background sounds very Oh Noish, and both emcees spit dope verses over the beat. I love the video idea of going 1992 on all of your asses. Can I say this again? Alchemist fucking kills it… “On some Steven Segal shit/salmonilla chicken I’m kickin that raw shit/for practice, so when you snack on this you get nautious”. Make sure you look close for a few well placed cameos (EV, Rakaa).

Here is a dope interview with Black Milk, as I’ve re-iterated many times before, I think he’s one of the best artists in the game period right now. In the first video you see he speaks on how he got his name, how he met Bishop Lamont and the super group Random Axe. You can follow me after the jump to watch the second and third part of the interview. Continue reading

Here is the video for Buff1der’s new single “Real Appeal” off of last year’s album There’s Only One. This joint was produced by fellow Michigan native (and incredible producer) 14KT. Buff has a flow that can’t be fucked with, and the backdrop that 14KT throws down is impeccable. Make sure you check out this video, and if you haven’t make sure you pick up Buff’s album There’s Only One. Be looking for Buff1 to be doing some big things in the near future, the guy is an amazing emcee.

Sonic Youth “Sacred Trickster” music video maintains the independent feeling
Posted in Video with tags download, free, matador records, music video, sonic youth, the eternal sacred trickster, Video, watch on Tuesday, June 16, 2009 by Ryan BuegeI still haven’t posted up my review of Sonic Youth’s The Eternal yet, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to stop plugging this album like nobody’s business anytime soon.
As someone who also constantly picks through the vinyl bins at the local record stores (often admittedly running across various used releases by SY, Thurston, and such), I couldn’t help but laugh at the band find their new album The Eternal for sale in the used bin on the streets only a few days after it’s release. Staged or not, the suggestion it implies is equally fantastic either way.
After moving to Matador for The Eternal following a long string of major label releases, the band’s video also reflects a renewed kinship for the independent spirit of the band’s earlier days. It’s a low budget, yet punchy number that shows some glaring similarities to a certain scene from Pontecorvo’s stunning 1967 masterpiece La battaglia di Algeri; I’m wondering if it’s an homage, but in short, it’s some great imagery to complement the confident, bouncy swagger of Gordon on “Sacred Trickster” and adds even another layer of depth to a taut track that’s already exploding with sound.

LIVE PERFORMANCE VIDEO: Tapes ‘n Tapes, “SWM” (live at Backyard BBQ from MTV2 Twin Cities week exclusive)
According to Gimme Noise, the Minneapolis metropolitan area has taken over the airwaves at MTV2 and MTV2.com this week, where they’ll be hosting interviews and performances that they taped two weeks ago during Soundset and such. To start the week off, Subterranean has posted a video of the local boys in Tapes ‘n Tapes showing off their acoustic skills on a rendition of “SWM”. Pay attention to MTV2.com throughout the week for more performances with TC artists such as P.O.S., Mike Mictlan, and more.
For today, I’m back with a round-up of the week in music videos and live performances that I cared to watch (except for one – if I find a d/l of the awesome Faith No More set from Download Festival that I live-streamed, I’ll be sure to post it later). Enjoy the list I’ve compiled; you’ll need to set aside a good chunk of time if you want to watch them all!
