One Week Only: Joy Division

Posted in Video with tags , , , on Monday, January 19, 2009 by Erik Burg

joy-division-docAs some of you might be aware of, Pitchfork Media has their own internet t.v. station called, well, pitchfork.tv. The station runs various live concerts, music videos, interviews and the such as you might expect, but one cool feature of the site is that it streams different movies or documentaries each week. The segment is called “One Week Only” (the creative guys over at p4k don’t seem to be too creative lately) and like I mentioned, it actually shows some pretty cool movies. This week though, One Week Only has hit its peak, premiering the wonderful documentary “Joy Division.” I’ll keep on pace with the whole not creative thing and point out that the title of the movie is exactly what the movie is about. The documentary follows the rise and fall of one of the greatest and most influential bands of all time, Joy Division, and the beyond crazy antics and visions of lead singer Ian Curtis.

This documentary has been critically acclaimed and I certainly found out why when I watched it. There are countless interviews from the members, managers, and everyone seemingly ever involved. There are of course rare live video footage and images that are able to keep the documentary flowing and keep the viewer interested, because let’s face it, documentaries always get a little dry. So yeah, give it a shot and see what this segment and Joy Division are all about. Enjoy!

Video: Pharoahe Monch – Ondaspot Freestyle

Vodpod videos no longer available.

As many of you already know, Pharoahe Monch is one of the best emcees in the game. The same would be true about his freestyling capabilities as shown on DJ Green Lantern’s “OnDaSpot Freestyle” segment. This video is only about two minutes long but it makes a huge impact because the way this guy can twist words is impeccable.

This is a video for a single off of N.A.S.A’s upcoming debut Spirit of Apollo which hits shelves February 17th. If I were you guys I would be marking that date on the calendar because this album is really going to be something very special. The guest list on this album is more expansive than anything I’ve seen in the last few years and it should make for a classic. The visuals and art in this video are amazing, and Chuck D drops an earth shattering verse to make sure you all know that he still has it.

The Tracklist:

02. The People Tree (feat. David Byrne, Chali 2na, Gift of Gab,& Z-Trip)
03. Money (feat. David Byrne, Chuck D, Ras Congo, Seu Jorge, & Z-Trip)

Video: Talib Kweli Interview with Hard Knock TV

Posted in Video with tags , , , , , , , on Tuesday, January 13, 2009 by Tim Althaus

Hard Knock TV recently did an interview with one of the greatest emcees of all time Talib Kweli. Kweli addresses a few very key issues. There are actually two parts to the interview. In the first video Kweli addresses a question about the song that he did for Lauryn Hill called “Ms. Hill” (which I may add is incredibly beautiful), as well as the influence that J Dilla has had on Kweli and his group of peers/musicians. In the second video he talks about Hi-Tek as well as addressing the issues about people thinking that Reflection Eternal was a “soft” record.

This is a great interview because I love hearing what this man has to say. He is by far one of the most intelligent minds in Hip-Hop and has been for just about ten years now. Kweli will be around for a long time in the world of Hip-Hop and I really can’t wait to see what he is going to come out with next. We all know that he has reunited with Hi-Tek and there has also been talks of another Black Star record. I can’t honestly tell you how overjoyed I would be if I get to see either of these albums come out this year.

Video: Buff1, “Dream Streets”

Posted in Video with tags , , , , on Friday, January 9, 2009 by Tim Althaus

If any of you don’t know who Buff1 is, you better find out fast. Buff1 is from Ann Arbor, Michigan which is no big surprise, (Michigan is taking over the game), and in my opinion he’s one of the best emcees in the game right now(he’s also a part of The Athletic Mic League). This is a video for a track on his latest effort There’s Only One for the track “Dream Streets”. This video is very sentimental and has a real message to it, to be honest you don’t see to many music videos like this one. The video shows Buff doing volunteer work and feeding homeless people (I’m guessing either in Ann Arbor or Ypsilanti) for the better of the community. This is a great song and video from one of the strongest releases of last year.

Skillz: The Wire 5 Minute, 5 Season Rap-Up

Posted in Video with tags , , , on Thursday, January 8, 2009 by Tim Althaus

For those of you out there that are huge enthusiasts of HBO’s series The Wire this one is truly for you. If you have listened to any of Skillz’s end of the year Rap-Up’s, you know that this guy can spit about a lot of information in a short amount of time. He single handedly goes through a summary of each season of  The Wire with that razor sharp flow that Skillz is known for. I personally have been listening to this guy a lot lately and I have to admit that I wish I would have started listening to this guy earlier, he has some serious mic skills (no pun intended). To be honest there aren’t many guys that can sound as natural on the mic as Skillz.

Video: Neko Case, “Making of” Middle Cyclone

Posted in Video with tags , on Tuesday, January 6, 2009 by Ryan Buege

Neko case has recently posted an awesome video online previewing her new album, Middle Cyclone. This red-headed alt-country darling has my favorite female voice in music and this album looks like it should be pretty awesome; kudos to her for what appears to be an extremely organic recording process. I’m sure the atmosphere of the barn amplified the musicians sound quite nicely. Middle Cyclone will be available on March 3, 2009.

Video: Elzhi & Black Milk Live @ Red Bull Big Tune in Seattle

Posted in Video with tags , , , , , , on Tuesday, December 30, 2008 by Tim Althaus

This is a video of two of the illest on the planet right now. These guys are tearing up the entire game and putting the “D” back on the map. Take a close watch as Black Milk & Elzhi go through some of their hits. Both of these guys can absolutely tear apart the show and the mic. I can honestly say that if I could see any show in the world right now, this would be the show. Make sure you stay tuned to the Elzhi set because he performs part of one of my favorite songs (“Hiding Place“) by Little Brother. Please go out and get Tronic by Black Milk and The Preface by Elzhi if you haven’t, they are two of the sickest albums of this year, and of course they are from the “D”.

Video: Royce Da 5’9″ “Shake This”

Vodpod videos no longer available.
It’s almost as if we haven’t heard a great deal of magnificent music from the city of Detroit this year. Royce Da 5’9″ dropped this video for the lead single off of his soon to come masterpiece Street Hop. If you watch the video closely you will also notice that DJ Premier makes a couple of cameos in this video, well that’s because he executive produced the whole Royce album. If you aren’t familiar with Royce you need to get acclimated with him because you are truly missing out on something special. I can honestly say that this may be one of my most anticipated albums for next year,  next to the Elzhi & Royce Da 5’9″ album (that’s right they are doing an entire album together) and Guilty Simpson & Sean Price album.

Video: Exile “A Milli” Live On The MPC

Here we go again folks. This is another video of DJ Exile punching the pads. If you still don’t believe in this guy after you watch this video, you might not know talent if it punched you in the face. This guy has some of the most amazing skills you could have on the MPC. Watch out for his album Radio dropping 1/20/09.
