Greg Gillis (a.k.a Girl Talk) is known for making his crazy ass fucking mash-ups of pop and rock songs that make you want to go crazy. I don’t like pop or maintstream music at all, but what this guy can do to music is absolutely incredible if you haven’t heard of him go download Feed the Animals (you can download for free or pay a penny if you like). In this video Gillis admits that he uses a PC instead of the traditional Mac that is used with making music. He talks about his theories on music, why he likes PC software (“punk”) and a couple of other things. Notice the background images of his shows, they are epic as hell and look like a crazy time. *Edit from ericbandloveaffair* holy shit that was the greatest night of my life, Gillis was absolutely insane and i took home a ton of shwag, including a sweaty Greg Gillis sweat band and a GT all access pass. more pics here

“I’m a PC and I make people sweat”

*** Note my boy Burg (ericbandloveaffair) (on the right side in the picture above) next to Gillis when he performed at First Avenue (He looks like he’s totally feeling it).

EDITOR’S NOTE: now I’m feeling it!

Video: Illa J “My Brothers Keeper” Pt. 1 & 2

Illa J released his solo debut Yancey Boys (on Delicious Vinyl) last week on Tuesday which is comprised completely of beats done by his big brother (and my inspiration) J Dilla. This is another album I just haven’t gotten a good listen of yet, but I can guarantee that this album will be something special. If you can all think about what Jay Dee’s sound was like back in the Ummah era (Tribe, Pharcyde) then you know what I am talking about. I will try to get a good listen here and get a review up for you guys soon. If you are a fan of Dilla or anything that sounds like him go out and get this album Illa J is definitely someone to watch for.

Check out these video interviews, the videos skew a good amount of material. It’s amazing to see just how much music was really coming out of the Yancey family. No wonder J Dilla and Illa J are beasts.

Video: Q-Tip “Move” (Live on Letterman)

tipWell as most of you heads in the Hip-Hop world know, Q-Tip (of A Tribe Called Quest) released his sophomore LP The Renaissance last Tuesday. I haven’t gotten a really good listen of this record yet, but I know that I am highly anticipating it. This is Tip’s first album in 9 years (Amplified was released in ’99 (which was produced entirely by Dilla) ), and there has been no sign of Tribe anywhere (except Rock the Bells last year). I must admit I heard a snippet of the song “Move” and I almost went nuts. I had to find out who produced that track because the sample was flipped just perfect and I couldn’t get enough. I then found out that Tip produced the entire album except for that one track. Does anyone wanna talk a wild guess who the producer of “Move” is? That’s right my man Dilla did the beat and to be honest I’m really not surprised because he was the best at what he did, and that’s making beats. This beat is no different with a great sample flip of the Jackson 5 that sounds like Dilla chopped the track like butcher meat.

I’ve heard a few tracks off of this record and I can honestly tell you that Tip has some serious skill on the MP, and that this record jives way more like a disco-hop than anything. I love the vibe I’ve heard and I’m going to get a review up really soon. In the meantime check this great performance of “Move” live on Letterman.

Video: Fashawn “Our Way” (feat. Evidence)

It seems like just about everything I post these days has a mention of Evidence. In this case it’s no different, but this time he is featuring for another artist named Fashawn from the Cali area. I first heard this guy when Evidence put out his video for “The Far Left” (off the LAyover EP). This guy definitely can do his thing on the mic, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him popping up in a lot more. He released a free mixtape called: One Shot Kill Mixtape (click the link for free download), and his debut album is going to be produced entirely by DJ Exile, who if you remember did the album Below The Heavens last year with Blu. Check this vid out and go check out Fashawn to, you should see a lot more of him sooner than later.

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Well here we are folks two tracks into the LAoyver EP and I already feel like it’s going to consume my entire life come the 25th. I really don’t need to say much about EV I think I’ve already done all the talking I need to. This guy is incredible. Listen to this track because the beat knocks like Halloween and the rhymes are air tight.

Video: Black Milk & Pharoahe Monch, Live in New York

Posted in Video with tags , , , , , , on Tuesday, November 4, 2008 by Tim Althaus

artist_blackmilk-pic12Well the CMJ festival just ended recently and Detroit phenom Black Milk gave a performance of his single “The Matrix” with Pharoahe Monch (Sean Price isn’t in the performance). Pharoahe also does a performance of the track “Let’s Go” that was produced by Black on Pharoahe’s album Desire that came out in 2007. Black Milk just released Tronic on October 28th and is getting the attention of critics all over the place. Based on this video it looks as if Black can put on one hell of a show, and as usual Pharoahe looks like he’s lights out when he’s live as well.

All of you that are reading this I strongly urge you to go out and get Tronic on Fat Beats records. The album is super hot and you will not be disappointed. Also make sure you jump over and grab the free mix tape that Black put out before Tronic called Elec here.

Video: Evidence, “The Layover”

Evidence (of Dilated Peoples) released his world premier video for his first single off of the LAyover EP “The LAyover”. The video was produced by Jason Goldwatch, who has done work for acts such as Ludacris, Dilated Peoples & Young Jeezy, and is definitely a great representation of LAX. This video does this song great justice and it’s a great way to start the hype for the LAyover EP which is due out on Decon Media on Novemeber 25th. You are going to hear me talk about that date a lot because I am waiting for it with great anticipation.

EV is one of those guys that has been working his ass off and deserves all of the credit that he gets, I honestly think there are only a few people in the game that have been putting in as much work as him. The one thing that I really like about EV is that when he initially came out with the Weatherman LP, he wasn’t trying to use the Dilated fame, he was trying to do everything by himself. Look out for that LAoyver Mixtape to due out real soon, and you know I will have a link up for that when the time comes.

You all should go out and grab Duck Season 3 by DJ Babu while you’re at it, shit is fire (review coming soon)!

Notorious: The Movie

Posted in Video with tags , on Monday, October 27, 2008 by Tim Althaus

I am really suprised this is the first time that I’ve actually heard anything about this (big up to Analecia and Carson for pointing me to this video). Apparently Fox Searchlight pictures is going to come out with a movie (Bio) about The Notorious B.I.G. (Aka Biggie Smalls, Big Pappa, Biggie) in 2009. I have to admit that I really don’t listen to a ton of Biggie, but I will at the same time admit that I do think he is one of the top lyricists of all time without question. The way that he rhymed influenced so many cats that go out there and do their thing now, the way he spit was like hearing a muder happen; it was totally vicious and you were never the same after you heard it. Ready to Die is and will always be one of the greatest albums in Hip-Hop history. I personally can not wait to see this movie when it comes out in January of 2009.

Video Premiere: Atmosphere launches their single for “You”

It looks like Slug and Ant are back at it again to bring you a music video for their newest single “You”. This is a pretty sick music video, it’s a great beat and the song has a great feel to it. I love the use of the “tech decks” I remember being somewhere around 13 to 14 years old and that being the obsession. Not to mention that the “tech deck” work in this video is amazing. It also looks like Slug and Ant put on “one hell of a party”.

Gojira made an amazing music video for their new song “Vacuity”

Posted in Video with tags , , on Tuesday, October 7, 2008 by Ryan Buege

France’s best metal band, Gojira, has just released the thought-provoking new video for “Vacuity,” the first single from their skull-crushing new album The Way of All Flesh. “Vacuity” was filmed by directors Julien Mokrani and Samuel Bodin with a RED video camera (the type used by Peter Jackson in the Lord of the Rings series), and they did an unbelievable job of reflecting the themes of the song through strong imagery and metaphors. The song was described by guitarist/vocalist Joseph Duplantier to UK’s Rock Sound magazine as being “about the Buddhist meaning of the word which is emptiness not nothingness, the ultimate presence. It was very hard to picture that concept in a video so we told the story of a girl carrying her own casket as the whole album is about facing your death and your pain.”

It’s been a long time since I spoke to Joe Duplantier during the Cavalera Conspiracy debut gig – and even longer since the release of Gojira’s last album, their genre-defining instant classic From Mars To Sirius. Needless to say, I’ve been very impatient to get this album in my hands to see how the last three years have influenced the band msuically. From the tracks that I’ve heard available on their myspace, The Way Of All Flesh defines their uniqueness even more. While the resemblances to Morbid Angel, Meshuggah, Mastodon, and Sepultura are still clear, Gojira seem to be getting more confident in their vision and abilities every day. Watch out for the album to hit stores on October 14. For now, we’ve got the video for you.

Dates for Gojira’s November U.S. tour with In Flames, All That Remains, and 36 Crazyfists are after the jump… Continue reading
