Details Surrounding Brother Ali’s Us are Revealed

Posted in Concert Dates, Music News with tags , , , , , on Monday, July 27, 2009 by Tim Althaus

brotherali1Brother Ali already released the critically acclaimed Truth Is Here EP this year, and now he is gearing up to release his full length Us which is due out this fall. Ali isn’t usually known for large amounts of guest appearances on his albums, but on this outting we will see more than we usually do. Joining him on the mic will be Chuck D, Freeway, Joell Ortiz & Stokely Williams. There is no word yet on the production for the album, but knowing Ali’s traditional formula I’m guessing Ant will have a huge role in this one. Those 2 have never made a miss, always hits but I wouldn’t mind seeing Jake One adding some of his pristine production to the bill.

Brother Ali is touring with Evidence & Toki Wright this fall in support of the new album, as well as Evidence’s new album Cats & Dogs. You can follow me after the jump for the tour dates. Continue reading

Ma Dukes Wins Battle Over Dilla’s Estate

Posted in Music News with tags , on Friday, July 24, 2009 by Tim Althaus

madukes

It appears as though today is a great day for Hip-Hop music as well as humanity. I was over at Okayplayer when I caught this fine piece of news. If you remember a while back, I mentioned that Ma Dukes was going through a lot of bullshit to make sure that Dilla’s legacy lived on in the right way. According to the Okayplayer post, Ma Dukes has reigned triumphant over the assholes that thought it would be cool to totally mess up Dilla’s legacy and screw over his family. I am so glad to hear that these things are cleared up, Ma Dukes is going through a lot right now and she definitely doesn’t need to be worrying about selfish and greedy people.

Skyzoo salvation

I’ve been waiting on this guys’ solo album for what seems like an ice age. Skyzoo recently dropped the artwork and tracklisting for his new album The Salvation. It looks like this album is going to be a defining opus with some of the best production we’ve heard in some time (Just Blaze, 9th Wonder, Black Milk, Illmind & Nottz to name a few). Skyzoo is a real emcee, and I can guarantee with the producers he has on board this album will not fall short of greatness. You can pick up this heat rock on September 29th. Meanwhile you can follow me after the jump for the tracklisting.

You know, I really hate Pitchfork sometimes, but in the same breath I can say that sometimes they are really great. After bashing Entourage they announced that my favorite New Zealand Folk duo is back again with their Sophomore album. The new album will be entitled I Told You I Was Freaky, and it will feature the tracks from season 2 that Brett & Jermaine have been releasing, as well as 3 songs never sold before. According to the Pitchfork article the album will also feature the instant classic “Too Many Dicks (On The Dance Floor)” which is one of my all-time favorites on the show. Follow me after the jump for the tracklisting. Continue reading

Blue Scholars to Drop New EP in August

Posted in Music News with tags , , , , on Monday, July 20, 2009 by Tim Althaus

Blue ScholarsOne of my favorite West Coast duos,  Blue Scholars, will be releasing a new EP on August 25th. These guys have been reppin’ hard for Seattle for the last 5 or so years. I unfortunately found out about these guys way too late when I read an article in Spin magazine last year. I immediately picked up their album Bayani and fell in love with that shit. Geo and Sabzi are one hell of a combo together and all of their music is top notch. Sabzi makes some of the dopest beats that have come out of the left coast in a while, and Geo’s political and conscious rhymes make me feel moved everytime I give their music a spin.

I found out about these guys last year, and their music has been on very heavy rotation ever since I’ve gotten into them. If you love good Hip-Hop there is no reason you should be sleeping on Blue Scholars. Make sure you stay tuned at Mind Inversion because I will definitely have a review up.

Editors Note*: According to the Blue Scholars Twitter Page, they will also be dropping a new full length in 2010.

This is the Day I’ve Been Waiting For…

Posted in Music News, Video with tags , , , , on Friday, July 17, 2009 by Tim Althaus

That’s right folks, it appears as though the sickest cat in the game just got sicker. I’ve been waiting to hear these words pretty much this whole year. As you can see above, Evidence just signed a multi-record deal with powerhouse label Rhymesayers Entertainment. You heard it, Cats & Dogs will be coming out on Rhymesayers Entertainment. I can’t tell you how truly happy I am to hear this news, I’ve been wondering if Rhymesayers was going to end up being a home for EV for awhile now. I almost feel as though this is a little bit surreal and I can’t figure out why. The one thing I can figure out, and do know, is that Evidence & Rhymesayers Entertainment are going to be taking over the game in 2010. Make sure you watch out for EV on tour with Brother Ali this fall.

His new mixtape, I Killed The Devil Last Night, is 26 all new tracks for you to sink your teeth into. For all of you who do know, Killah Priest is the real fucking deal. Jay Electronica & Mos Def Will Be At First Avenue August 1st

Posted in Music News with tags , , , on Friday, July 10, 2009 by Tim Althaus

jayelectronica

Oh good lord, it appears as though two of the most revered emcees at this time will be at First Avenue on August 1st. Might Mos Def and Jay Electronica will surely be tearing up the Main Stage that Saturday night, and I can honestly tell you that I’m going to do everything in my power to be there. Culture Bully also mentioned that these two will be doing a whole album entitled Sympatico together in the near future. I think if these two put out an album it might change the way that people look at the game. There will be more tour dates to come as well.

New Holy Ghost! via Green Label Sound

holy ghost record

The site/label that’s brought you great tracks from Matt & Kim to The Cool Kids is back once again to release the first Holy Ghost! track in two years. Green Label Sound, the indie-hipster side of Mountain Dew (I thought they only liked gamers) is ready and willing to give away the spooky disco single “I Will Come Back”. Brooklyn duo Nick Millhiser and Alex Frankel have been hard on the remix trail since their inception, but it’s their solo work that impresses me more often than their edits. And “I Will Come Back” is no exception, following in the disco footsteps, or dance pattern if you will, of “Hold On”, it features vocals that are reverbed and echoed to create a track that feels hollow, yet a drum kick that’s funky and fresh rounds the song into an extremely fun and danceable treat. And what else can you expect from DFA DJs, I mean come on. So turn it on and turn it up, for a free download it doesn’t get much better than this. Enjoy!

The Dodos – new album in September & 2009 tour dates w/ Ruby Suns

dodostimetodie

Good news people, two of the most enjoyable bands are touring together. Even better news, one of them is putting out a new album in the fall. The Dodos and The Ruby Suns will be touring together this fall, and on an extensive trip throughout the entire country the two groups won’t stop in the midwest for too long, but do manage to squeeze in a show here in Minneapolis at the Turf Club on October 20th. I had the pleasure of seeing The Dodos perform live at last year’s Pitchfork Music Festival and they absolutely blew me away, so I would usually say go on that recommendation alone, but I’ve been hooked on The Ruby Suns for about a year now as well. Their album Sea Lion is completely under appreciated and should have been heard by a lot more people, but too bad for all of you missing out I guess. It’s shaping up to be one of the must see concerts of the fall so far, so get your tickets as soon as they go on sale. Here are a few MP3s to get acquainted with the bands if you haven’t heard them yet:

MP3: The Dodos – “Fools”

MP3: The Ruby Suns – “Kenya Dig It?”

The Dodos have been working on a new studio album as well, slated to hit shelves September 15th. Time To Die is the follow up to the mesmerizing Visiter back in 2007. The album will feature a new member in the band as well, upping the number of members to three, a one Keaton Snyder will be featured on the vibraphone. As Meric Long recalls in an interview about the record and their recent touring, Snyder still has a bit to learn:

“He’s a better musician than Logan and I combined. I don’t even know what’s going on with his music theory ideas half the time.” On a similar note, Snyder-a classically-trained musician-is constantly learning what ‘being in a band’ entails. In fact, he didn’t even know how to react when a chord was yanked during his Dodos debut. “After the show,” says Long, “he was like, ‘Yeah, I’ve never had to plug anything in before.’ It was hilarious.”

September 15th is the release date, October 20th is the tour date. So pencil them in, and if you didn’t get enough of The Dodos on the Miller Chill commercial I’m sure you’ll be hearing all about them come fall. Track listing below:

01 Small Deaths
02 Longform
03 Fables
04 The Strums
05 This Is A Business
06 Two Medicines
07 Troll Nacht
08 Acorn Factory
09 Time To Die
