The Foreign Exchange Take You To Their “House of Cards”

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Talk about an amazing group. The Foreign Exchange has been one of my favorite groups over the past few years, and it’s because not many people mesh as well as Phonte & Nicolay. I had given the album Leave it all Behind some rough comments, but since then I have learned to love the album a great deal. The video for “House of Cards” (Feat. Muhsinah) is nothing short of incredible, everything is pristine from the production to the concept. It just might be up there with “House of Flying Daggers” for one of the top videos of the year.

One Be Lo

If you are reading this asking yourself, “Who is One Be Lo”?, you should feel more than ashamed. One Be Lo is one of the sickest emcees to ever come out of the Midwest, and it’s no surprise that he’s from Michigan. If you haven’t heard anything from this man you need to go get S.O.N.O.G.R.A.M. & The R.E.B.I.R.T.H. right now. I’m absolutely loving this track, it contains a nice hard hitting beat full of synthesizers and a hook courtesy of Mike Posner. If you are familiar with One Be Lo, you know that the rhymes rifled off on this track are going to be superior to most everything you will hear. Listen to One Be Lo talk about your favorite “Boys in Blue” with vivid details that he is only capable of. Don’t sleep any longer.

DJ Khalil Runs Us Through The Making of “Kind of a Big Deal”

Posted in Media, Video with tags , , , on Friday, August 28, 2009 by Tim Althaus

If you’ve been sleeping under a rock, it would make sense that you have no idea who DJ Khalil is. This guy have been making some of the craziest beats in the Hip-Hop game for the last few years. In this video with Hip Hop Official, Khalil takes us through the process that was implemented while making the Clipse track, “Kind of a Big Deal“. I love the fact that there are absolutely no samples in this track, don’t get me wrong I love sampling but I think it’s much cooler when producers chop live instrumentation. Everything in this video makes me have a greater appreciation for Kahlil’s talent, and this beat in general. (Side Note* I love how they play the beat for Evidence, “All Said & Done” in the video)

Jay Electronica Performs “Google Eyes” Live

Posted in Media, Video with tags , on Friday, August 28, 2009 by Tim Althaus

Here is some more live of the phenom, Jay Electronica, performing some live shit. In this video (that comes to us courtesy of Nah Right) he performs the track “Google Eyes”, which I’m pretty sure I haven’t had the pleasure of hearing. I don’t know how many times I have to say it, but damnit, I want that Jay Electronica full length like now. And for the umpteenth time, why the hell did I miss this show?

In the interview he talks about what he’s been up to lately with the release of Only Built 4 Cuban Linx 2 coming up, the new generation and why he’s been in the game so long, working with Dr. Dre & more. Make sure you peep the interview, it’s good. You can follow me after the jump for the “Catalina” track. (P.S. it’s clean) We now have the clean version!

OOF! EP Album Cover
On Tuesday, Blue Scholars released the much awaited OOF! EP. The sound is different from what we’re used to, but it’s a pretty cool concept, with Hawaiian themed beats and lyrics. I still haven’t totally decided whether I like the EP or not yet, I’m trying to let it grow on me a bit. However, above you can stream the whole album here and decide for yourself!
Visit iTunes or the Blue Scholars’ store to purchase OOF! EP. Currently it is the #2 Hip Hop Album on the iTunes charts.
There are also packages that include the physical copy of the album, t-shirt, and poster online at the Blue Scholars store. You can also pre-order Bayani Redux which drops September 1st.

Wild Style Wednesday Review: El-P, Fantastic Damage

Posted in Music Reviews, Wildstyle Wednesdays with tags , , , , , , , on Wednesday, August 26, 2009 by Tim Althaus

fantastic_damage_frontIt’s very easy for me to say that El-P has re-invented the wheel twice in the Hip-Hop game. The first time he did it was with Fantastic Damage (One of the best debuts ever?), and without a question he did it again on I’ll Sleep When You’re Dead. Don’t get me wrong, I love both albums as much as you possibly could, I just think Fantastic Damage has a slight edge on ISWYD. The dark, hard hitting, brain hemorrhaging beats on this album are some of the most crazy concoctions my ear drums have ever had the pleasure of discovering. To me it’s no wonder that people were waiting for I’ll Sleep When You’re Dead with such anticipation… they new it was going to be a classic because of Fantastic Damage. Continue reading

The Step Brothers Ring In On Health Care

Posted in Media, Video with tags , , , , on Wednesday, August 26, 2009 by Tim Althaus

Here is another interview with Alchemist & Evidence talking to Jabari. This time they sound off on the health care in the United States, and how important it is to them. As you can imagine, these guys both feel that it is very important and it’s something that everyone should have. Evidence ends up getting pretty deep with it, and I love when he goes to AL to say something funny, shit’s priceless.

Today, Brother Ali and Rhymesayers Entertainment launched Brother Ali’s brand new website www.brotherali.com to help promote the September 22nd release Us. The site has all the usual stuff plus a place where you can leave personal stories for Ali to read and connect with the fans (of course with a few ground rules to prevent the rowdy interneters).
