Ma Dukes Wins Battle Over Dilla’s Estate

It appears as though today is a great day for Hip-Hop music as well as humanity. I was over at Okayplayer when I caught this fine piece of news. If you remember a while back, I mentioned that Ma Dukes was going through a lot of bullshit to make sure that Dilla’s legacy lived on in the right way. According to the Okayplayer post, Ma Dukes has reigned triumphant over the assholes that thought it would be cool to totally mess up Dilla’s legacy and screw over his family. I am so glad to hear that these things are cleared up, Ma Dukes is going through a lot right now and she definitely doesn’t need to be worrying about selfish and greedy people.

Skyzoo salvation

I’ve been waiting on this guys’ solo album for what seems like an ice age. Skyzoo recently dropped the artwork and tracklisting for his new album The Salvation. It looks like this album is going to be a defining opus with some of the best production we’ve heard in some time (Just Blaze, 9th Wonder, Black Milk, Illmind & Nottz to name a few). Skyzoo is a real emcee, and I can guarantee with the producers he has on board this album will not fall short of greatness. You can pick up this heat rock on September 29th. Meanwhile you can follow me after the jump for the tracklisting.

You know, I really hate Pitchfork sometimes, but in the same breath I can say that sometimes they are really great. After bashing Entourage they announced that my favorite New Zealand Folk duo is back again with their Sophomore album. The new album will be entitled I Told You I Was Freaky, and it will feature the tracks from season 2 that Brett & Jermaine have been releasing, as well as 3 songs never sold before. According to the Pitchfork article the album will also feature the instant classic “Too Many Dicks (On The Dance Floor)” which is one of my all-time favorites on the show. Follow me after the jump for the tracklisting. Continue reading

Paul Rodriguez + Nike SB x Ice Cube = One Hell of a Commercial

Posted in Media, Video with tags , , , on Friday, July 24, 2009 by Tim Althaus

I caught this one on TV yesterday, and it dawned on me that I should go to YouTube to see if I could post it for you guys. This is the type of commercial that you look forward to seeing. I’ve always been a huge fan of Nike SB skate shoes especially the Paul Rodriguez model, so naturally I’m going to love this commercial. In the video you get to see P-Rod tearing up the streets of LA on his board all over the place to the tune of “Today Was a Good Day” by Ice Cube. Even the Ice Cube cameo in this video is priceless. Probably the best commercial I’ve seen so far in 2009.

Wu-Tang Clan Demo Tape?

wu

I was over at Hip Hop Official and I found this rare gem. What I have here, is the original 1992 Wu-Tang Demo. That’s right, this is before they became every Hip-Hop head’s favorite group with Enter The 36 Chambers. We are talking about the demo that got Wu-Tang Clan in the game. You will hear every member of the Clan gracing the mic just like they always have. Not to mention that you will get to hear some straight up old school RZA production. Don’t sleep on this one, you may truly regret it.

Raekwon Talks Only Built 4 Cuban Linx II

Posted in Media, Video with tags , , , , , on Friday, July 24, 2009 by Tim Althaus

As my man Nolan mentioned earlier this week, Raekwon finally dropped the album artwork and tracklisting for Only Built 4 Cuban Linx II. In this video he talks a lot about the production that his going to be on the new album. He mentions that when he was going through the process, he thought that production was going to be the biggest piece of the album. Rae actually breaks down how dope he thinks (and I think) Dilla is on the boards. He calls him “like a Dr. Dre & a RZA… a combo”. I’m sure that you can expect nothing but straight fire from Rae & Ghost. Make sure you drop that shit on September 8th, you won’t regret it.

DJ Khalil & Nas in the Studio recording

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Shout out to Okayplayer for the find. Here we have Nas and DJ Khalil in the lab recording the song “Colors” which sounds sweet. Apparently it was supposed to be on Untitled but did not make the cut. From the sounds of it, the song is about race, specifically about mixed-race children.

Wild Style Wednesday Review: The Roots, Things Fall Apart

Posted in Music Reviews, Wildstyle Wednesdays with tags , , , , , on Wednesday, July 22, 2009 by Tim Althaus

the-roots_things-fall-apart-album-cover The Roots will forever be one of my favorite groups in Hip-Hop because I love their utilization of a live band and their natural sound. Not to mention that Black Thought is also one of my top five emcees, the guy is pretty much a god emcee on the microphone. I like every single album in The Roots catalog, but Things Fall Apart is the album that introduced me to them. I look at this album that came out ten years ago and part of me still feels like even now this album would still be ahead of its time. This album, to this day, is one of the most sound albums I have ever heard and there is no doubt that it will forever be considered a classic. Even though this album didn’t make my top 10 most influential albums, I would still say it ranks among my top 10-20 favorite albums without a doubt.

Jay Electronica & Just Blaze In the Studio

Posted in Media, Video with tags , on Wednesday, July 22, 2009 by Tim Althaus

Yet again, my day keeps getting better. I spotted this video of Just Blaze & Jay Electronica in the studio at 2DopeBoyz. I don’t really think I need to say much about this post. Just Blaze is cooking up a beat that sounds like it’s rated at 3,000 degrees celcius, and Jay is just jamming out while spitting some rhymes.
