Brother Ali brings the truth to Paid Dues 2009

Vodpod videos no longer available.

I spotted this one over at Okayplayer today, and was quite pleased. This is a video of Brother Ali performing a few of his tracks at this year’s Paid Dues festival (“Bitchslap”, “Room With A View” & “Take Me Home”). As I’ve said before, Brother Ali puts on a damn good show and this video definitely proves it. I just wish that I could have been there to see not only Brother Ali, but the rest of the artists that represented for Hip-Hop at Paid Dues this year. For all of you that got to go to this, I am truly jealous. At the same time I am very happy for you, because you saw some great stuff.

Make sure you go out and grab Brother Ali’s newest effort The Truth is Here EP. The EP is good on so many levels and if you keep passing it over you will end up regretting it in the end.

DJ Premier talks about his origins

Posted in Media, Video with tags , , , on Tuesday, March 31, 2009 by Tim Althaus

This is a great video interview that comes to you from Mass Denim & Hip-Hop.pl. This interview is focused mostly on the origins of Gang Starr and what was going on at that time, as well as Premo’s origins in production and major influences at the time. With both parts it’s just over 15 minutes long, but it is definitely time well spent. Premier is one of those guys that will never go out of style, because all he has is style. There is a reason why he is, and always will be one of the best producers the game has ever seen. My advice to you is to watch part one of the video up top, and follow me after the jump for part 2 of the video. Continue reading

Jadakiss, Ghostface & Reakwon? Get the hell out…

Posted in Downloads, Media with tags , , , , , on Tuesday, March 31, 2009 by Tim Althaus

jadakiss1 I started seeing this track everywhere and I had to put something up about it, because it is just that good. I’ve been feeling Jadakiss since his days back in The Lox with Sheek and Styles. His last album, Kiss of Death was a raw ass record and I still bump that shit hard to this day. I don’t even really need to give introductions for Ghostface or Raekwon, so you can imagine just how sick this track is.

The track is called “Cartel Gathering”, and the beat is pretty much ridiculous. All of these emcees showcase their top effort, and Ghost is the first to take off, “Don’t be afraid of the New York Street talk/I switch gear all day bro, like you do in your peach Porsche”. Rae follows suit very nicely, “…That was the 90’s/Chef era take over America/bag Ugly Betty up and make her Ms. Ferrera”. Continue reading

New Max Tundra video, touring through Minneapolis this weekend

Posted in Concert Dates, Video with tags , , , , , on Tuesday, March 31, 2009 by Erik Burg

Max Tundra, the glitchy-electro-pop one man show, will be heading through the midwest this coming weekend. Friday April 3rd Junior Boys will be headlining a show at the First Ave Mainroom, with Max Tundra opening. Both acts have the same sort of feel to them, and I’m sure the two awesome bands will be able to feel off each other and get the crowd plenty into it. And apparently Max likes to dance around on stage like a little boy when he performs too, so at least it will be entertaining of not mind blowing (hehe).

He’s got a new video out too, for the the track “Which Song.” I’d discourage this to the people who got sick watching the Blair Witch Project, seeing as the camera has a liiiittttle  tendency to move around, but see for yourself:

And grab some tickets to the First Ave show if you enjoyed, only $10 bucks!

Metal A/V Roundup: Slayer, Isis, Glorior Belli, Converge and more

Posted in Media with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on Tuesday, March 31, 2009 by Ryan Buege

Slayer, Psychopathy RedThe thrash legends in Slayer have planned to issue their newest song, “Pyscopathy Red”, as a 7″ vinyl release as part of the annual Record Store Day on April 18th! Only 5,000 of these limited edition blood-red vinyl 7-inch vinyls will be made available, the first sounds that were recorded in a Los Angeles studio last October for Slayer’s forthcoming untitled full-length record of back-to-basics RiB thrash. So don’t forget to get out to support Record Store Day on April 18 and listen to the new “Psychopathy Red” online now while you wait. The list of participating stores is here.

Anyone who knows me well, knows that I’m a total Isis nut. I’m following the release of Wavering Radiant closely (and not allowing myself to listen to a leak until its sent to my doorstep), and have been anticipating every minute. The new song “20 Minutes / 40 Years” has me confident that this album tops their most recent ouput, and now they’ve got a new in studio video that making me just itch when I wonder if it’s true. The clip sounds more like House of Low Culture than Isis, but it serves to prove that the band has only further fell in love with their art of heady psychedelics.

French black metallers Glorior Belli just announced the release of their next album, Meet Us of the Southern Sign last week, and now they have graced us with a new track of aural psychosis entitled “In Every Grief – Stricken Blues”. Taking a page from the book of Opeth, they play one of the more alluring adaptations from black metal that I’ve heard recently; a far different approach than much of the very raw BM that has been predominant the last few years. This song is a slow, gorgeous, heavily-layered buildup (with clean vocals!) rather than the blasting chaos you might expect, and could find a welcome audience outside BM in the same way that their fellow Frenchmen in Gojira have found crossover appeal outside of death metal. Give it a listen at MetalKult, and don’t forget to catch them on tour at Station 4 with Absu in June!

NEW CONVERGE MUSIC!! FULL SONGS LIVE!! My buddies over at MetalInjection were kind enough to bootleg the recent Converge show in Brooklyn, and were able to record the entire set. Every day they’ll be posting more videos online, and they start with two brand-fucking-new still-untitled songs of brilliant hardcore. Chicago, here I come!

WATCH: Converge live at Club Europa in Brooklyn, NY 03/28/09 (exclusive from MI)

LISTEN: ZAO, “What Will You Find?” (from Awake?, available 5/5)

WATCH: War From A Harlots Mouth, “Crooks at Your Door” (from In Shoals, available 4/28)

WATCH: In Flames, “Delight and Angers” (from A Sense of Purpose)

LISTEN: God Dethroned, “Under a Darkening Sky” (from Passiondale, available 4/24)

So this Matthew Mondanile guy is the man

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , on Monday, March 30, 2009 by Erik Burg

Matthew Mondanile is the lead man for the band Real Estate, and solo man on the project Ducktails. Matthew Mondanile pretty much rocks. There seems to be quite a backstory for the guy too, which I’m trying to sweep together piece by piece as well. But it’s easy to find out how great his music is. Check out a clip of an interview he did for Viceland:

It’s a basic tip, but it sounds like a good one.
Yeah. So at New World Hot Dog we’d listen to music and drink beer. Before I was introduced to Pacific City I was pretty bummed and didn’t know how to focus my jams. I was scatter-brained – I traveled to different places while I was in Pacific City, like Finland, Spain, Granada and just chilled with my friend Brittany. Granada’s one of the most beautiful places…

Hold on – what island did you say Pacific City was on?
I’m not really sure. It’s somewhere between New Jersey and Asia.

Does it exist in the physical world?
For some people, yes. But not for others.

matthew-mon

So there is Real Estate, a four person band New Jersey. And apparently the band spend a great amount of time on the Jersey shore growing up, many of their track titles and themes for the lyrics seem to be derived from the mist and crashes of the busy shore. You can hear it in the first few seconds of “Pool Swimmers,” there is this misty and fuzzy sound lingering above all that is going on. The slow moving guitar, not on in “Pool Swimmers” but in other tracks as well, creates a very comfortable atmosphere for the listener. Their snares have a spooky feeling to them as well, reminding me of a one Ancient Crux I featured on here a while back. The watered-down and distant vocals feel right at home, nestled down below all of the interweaving of the music. If Brooklyn and the Caribbean had a kid, he’d make music like this.

Real Estate – “Beach Comber”

And then there is Ducktails. The much more adventurous and experimental outlet for Mondanile. I guess I’ll stick with my hypothetical children theme and say that Ducktails is like the bastard child of Panda Bear and Air France. For growing up in New Jersey this guy sure does have a grasp on the sunny beach theme. “Beach Point Pleasant” is a looping masterpiece, with a sample starting things off and continuing throughout the entire piece. The track seems to exemplify what Ducktails is all about, stringy guitar and peaceful mellotrons, little to no vocalization, and presto: it’s 1968 and you’re sitting the beach with a young Brian Wilson.

Ducktails – “Beach Point Pleasant”

I feel terribly naive talking about this man’s music, for it seems as though there is a lot more to take on than what I have for the past few days. But I love what he does, and I want you to love it as well. So obviously I would highly encourage giving either of the two actsducktails a spin, especially this time of the year Ducktails can at least make you feel like it isn’t still below freezing outside, ha. (I’ve been running a cabin fever theme on here for years it feels like). Most of all though, support what you like, buy a record, buy one Ducktails tapes even. It’s bands like this that make me keep a great perspective on music and its influence on me. It can make me smile and weep with the same loop, hanging on the twang of every string. Cliched? fuck it. I love music.

Vimby catches up with Evidence

Posted in Media, Video with tags , , , , , on Monday, March 30, 2009 by Tim Althaus

Vodpod videos no longer available.

It’s always good to see and hear new things about EV in the news. The people over at Vimby caught up with Evidence and discussed a variety of issues, including Cats & Dogs. He also discusses how The LAyover was more of a darker album because of the focus of the content (his mother), and lately he has been finding himself making up beat stuff. I like how he talks about performing his material to the fans (EV PLEASE COME TO MINNESOTA AGAIN), and how a live performance might be able to give even more of a visual. It’s also always good to see EV in the studio with Fashawn because you know he’s going to be huge on the scene soon, and it’s great to see EV bringing him into the spotlight.

Make sure you check out the video and stay tuned to Mind Inversion for all of the latest news on Evidence. Oh and one more thing, if you are still sleeping on The LAyover EP there is no hope for you in this lifetime.

Ryan B.’s 25 Most Influential Albums (in haiku)

Ryan's Most Influential Albums

Finally, we are at the end of March, and the time has come for me to put the closing bell on the Mind Inversion tribute to the recently popular Facebook meme on your most influential albums. I’ll have you know that, like most lists I make, the albums for this list were brainstormed rather quickly, and I think that’s a good thing. If an album were actually as influential as I thought, their importance should be fairly easy for me to recall. Truthfully, I’ve never really become too embarrassed about any album that I own; sure, I may have made some questionable choices in my youngest years, but somehow I’ve always seemed to have a remarkably good bullshit detector when it comes to music. What follows is a journey through the albums that had the biggest impact on forming my tastes and such over the years. If you really love the music I post about, read on for a brief reverse-chronological (moreorless) recounting of my most influential albums. For better or worse, I’ve written them out as haikus for your enjoyment!

25. Nachtmystium, Assassins: Black Meddle, Part I

Sick, twisted, subtle
Black metal psychedelia
With soul of Pink Floyd

24. Deerhunter, Cryptograms

Melodies so sweet
And a massive wall of noise!
A new Sonic Youth?

Exile & DJ Day duel with MPCs

Posted in Media, Video with tags , , , on Sunday, March 29, 2009 by Tim Althaus

I’ve posted a few videos with Exile on his trusty MPC, but this one is just bananas. This is the “Dope Man” routine that Exile & DJ Day do together live on stage. This is some insane beat work that these guys are doing and it just amazes how good they are with the MPC. This video is only one minute and forty seconds long, but to be honest that’s all you really need to comprehend how good these two are. Make sure you check out Exile’s album Radio which dropped back in January, it’s damn good.
