Talk about a rare opportunity to see a band live. Here is an awesome (and truly beyond rare) video of Thomas Bangalter of Daft Punk playing a nearly 30 minute Dj set in France in 2005.

Awesome would be an understatement. The man spins not only his own material but a plethora of different club bangers as well (Prodigy?!). It’s a must see for any fan of Daft Punk or for any fan of electronic music. I’ll stop talking so you can go watch.

Moby releases David Lynch directed video for “Shot in the Back of the Head”

Honestly, I had literally thought that Moby had disappeared from the face of the earth until I recently saw him pop up in some of the videos of Fucked Up‘s  rendition of “Blitzkrieg Bop” at their 12 hour concert marathon while I was watching on Youtube. Really, it had been a lonnnnnng time since I’d seen him. For all I knew, the dude had taken the millions upon millions of dollars that his songs had earned from being auction off and bought a one-way rocket ride back to whatever planet it was that spawned him. The dude has always seemed a bit creepy (and overrated) to me, but that doesn’t change the fact that I have found his schtick to be increasingly interesting as I’ve grown older…

On “Shot in the Back of the Head”, I think I have finally found the Moby that I can truly enjoy. These days, Moby seems to have fallen for post-rock, and I can’t complain; “Shot in the Back of the Head” is still electronic at its core, but the lush orchestration on this song is more beautiful than anything I’ve ever heard from him and has admittedly made me a late (and unlikely) convert to Moby’s fanbase. I’ll be waiting til June 30th to see if Wait For Me is really as good as it seems it might actually be. Enjoy the video; David Lynch has made a great companion to Moby’s gorgeous audio track.

Halloween, Alaska are back in action with Champagne Downtown

As Sound Verite’ reminds us, Halloween, Alaska pretty much disappeared from the scene not too long after the release of their breakthrough album Too Tall Too Hide in 2005. Well, turns out they just took a break from playing shows so that they work on their new album, and it looks like the time away has paid off. Their third full-length album, Champgne Downtown, will be formally released at First Avenue in Downtown Minneapolis on Friday, April 10th at the band’s show with other local favorites Chris Koza and Aby Wolf.

Vocalist James Diers, drummer Dave King (Bad Plus, Happy Apple), and bassist Matt Friesen, and are now joined by guitarist Jacob Hanson, allowing Diers to make the move to keyboards. On the MP3 that SV posts, “The Hollywood Sign”, the band proves to have made the right decision; the lush ambient textures magnify slowly before a dreamy breakdown smacks you upside the head with the literary aid of Diers, and the following come down is just as soothing as it was ascending. Halloween, Aslaska has also posted several songs from the album streaming on their website, and a few things are clear; the band’s avant-poppy sensibilities can still be just as jarring and entrancing as ever, and the songs are even more meticulously constructed to convey some very intense and an intentional emotions and POVs. Just a preliminary guess, but I have some feelings that this one is going to grow on me quite a bit by the end of the year.

Röyksopp “Happy Up Here” video is a visual delight

Röyksopp is a well-established electronic duo hailing from Norway that surely deserves the attention of anyone who enjoys the melodic electro pop or synthpop stylings of bands ranging from Massive Attack to Daft Punk to MGMT. On this first video from their new album Junior (available March 23rd), the visuals definitely vibe with the positive flow of “Happy Up Here”. Though I’m not sure of the director, this video inspires many of the same feelings as when I first saw many of the Justice videos or something Surface2Air might do over the last few years. The song’s soothing, but it has a beautiful, strong presence, that is complemented intriguingly by the sleek subliminal visuals of this video. Sunday Metal Minute: Agoraphobic Nosebleed, “Agorapocalypse Now”

ANBThe Massachusetts gore-grind mind Scott Hull is on the loose again, and this time it’s his Agoraphobic Nosebleed violent grind onslaught that’s doing the damage. On “Agorapocalypse Now”, the current tri-vocal combination between Jay Randall, KAT, Richard Johnson is doing wonders for the ANB sound and while it’s still gritty, chaotic, thrashy, and messy, it’s a much more digestible sound than what was found on the outfit’s earlier albums. Scott Hull has made a way for his violent electronic death grindand to sound almost classic, in a way. Anyone who was hasn’t payed attention to Agoraphobic Nosebleed in a few years should tune back in; Scott Hull is the riffmaster and this band is in the finest form of the existence.

Concert Review: Fujiya & Miyagi, School of Seven Bells @ 7th Street Entry

Fujiyai & MiyagiFujiya & Miyagi came to the 7th St. Entry on Wednesday Feb. 11th with School of Seven Bells, and the show was nothing short of spectacular. The sold out basement club was packed wall-to-wall with a crowd who were highly anticipating the opening performance from SVIIB, and their fuzzed out, dreamy, drony psychedelic pop created an intoxicating atmosphere that did not fade until they left the stage. Sounding ultra classic, futuristic, AND foreign all at once, the twins of School of Seven Bells blend heavenly melodies over the hypnotic driving backbone of Benjamin Curtis’s guitar and electronic experimentation. Fujiya & Miyagi were even more powerful than I imagined they would be, with their bouncy electronic psych rock aided by the powerful presence of a full band. Depending on the point in their set, the crowd might have been dancing to the rhythm or swaying to the spacey fretwork; either way, it was always all fun for those who were wise enough to stick around. We were there all night and were able to snap a few photos; view them below!

Audio Mix: Hybrid, Transitions Mix

Hybrid, the electronic brainchild of UK’ers Mike Truman and Chris Healings, remains one of my favorite techno/ electronic groups to date.  Their stylish mix of trance, progressive house, and their inventive drum breaks cement their reputation as a very solid DJ act.  Their debut LP “Wide Angle” came out in 1999, and although I didn’t discover it until a few years after the release, their amazing mix of electronic beats and live string arrangements pulled me into the diverse world of techno, and broke ground for a future love of all things electronic.

Their distinctive style has evolved into something all their own, but comparisons can be drawn from such powerhouse electronic acts such as Massive Attack, Portishead, John Digweed, and Underworld.  Many live trance acts mar their performance (in my opinion) with unnecessary vocal samples, often in the flavor of a female vocalist voicing shallow philosophy or heartbreak, but Hybrid uses a more opera style female vocals very tastefully, and not as a main aspect of their live mixes.

Their latest live mix, which debuted on Transitions (Kiss 100) in the UK (DJ’d by John Digweed) last October, draws from a great list of remixed tracks:

These tracks flow effortlessly into each other, creating a great mix for a late night dance party or as a soundtrack to any other activity: Driving, gaming, or smoking. Starting with the more chill Wainwright, and transitioning into the next track, this mix gains steam, eventually building into the deep trance, low frequency beats I love Hybrid for.

Audio Mix: MIXHELL, Mishka presents Keep Watch Vol. 5

Iggor Cavalera  and Laima Leyton have a very busy life even when he’s not out on the road with his brother Max in the Cavalera Conspiracy. Ever since he left Sepultura in 2006, he and his wife have been working as the brilliantly creative Brazillian electro-duo MIXHELL, touring the world and gaining much praise within underground beat circles for their MPC/turntable/drum-driven beat heavy ruckus. Oh yeah, and they’ve got FIVE young children (who just so happen to operate MIXHELL’s blog – cute!). It’s a very hard task to make a serious leap from the metal community to the djing world, but with some good friendships (such as their association’s with James Murphy or Justice) and some awesome music, anything can happen. …Even while raising a family.

Last week, our favorite overseas electronic connection posted a superb mix that MIXHELL completed for Mishka‘s Keep Watch! series, and it deserves a mention here. Just listen to the opening Metallica “For Whom The Bells Tolls” Intro! How are these guys NOT playing sold out shows in big American clubs? They need to get on a good tour sometime soon, because something tells me that if American electro/dance fans got wind of MIXHELL, they’d storm the scene.

Album Review: Merzbow, Camouflage

Noise music is such a very different type of beast to review. The absolute lack of structure and conventional “song” characteristics can make it impossible for some listeners to digest while other listeners may thoroughly enjoy the instrumental experimentations and interesting nuances that are laced throughout most releases of this nature. Do I attempt to review the music of a noise CD as “good” or “bad” in the context of accepted opinions, or should I simply try to describe the nature of the sounds that I heard and let my reader make up their own mind about the value of those sounds? When talking about one of the genre’s legends, Japan’s Merzbow, I think that I’ll choose the latter…

THE preeminent noise musician to come from Japan, the insanely prolific and universally respected Merzbow, is back in 2009 with Camouflage, the first in a string of planned forthcoming releases. Over an hour of sprawling laptop-directed electronic madness is divided into three tracks that tie together many common themes throughout their meandering journeys. To an uninitiated listener of electronic music, many of the tonal qualities are reminiscent of artists such as Aphex Twin or Autuchre, but his heavily effected beats often reverberate with an overwhelming sense of distortion that touches into drone and sludge. At times, throughout the mix I’m also hearing sounds reminiscent of the 80s industrial and noise renaissance, and “natural” computer and worldly sound effects form the basis of some of Camouflage‘s most interesting aural treats. Despite the long song lengths (avg. around 20 minutes), they actually don’t seem to drag on, as experimental instrumentation and sparse droney, ambient sections segue into trance and electronica in an ebb-and-flow manner that’s quite meditative. Conventional fans of electronic music and rock fans might be turned off by this release, but I think anyone who’s interested in psychedelic music would be very satisfied by the many brilliant noise experiments and sounds that were created on this release. It’s a very cerebral listen and a very rewarding piece of art for anyone who was worried that the world was running out of sounds manipulate into music.
