Daft Punk Gets Remixed After All

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , on Friday, May 15, 2009 by Erik Burg

Sure the French Duo have been remixed dozens of times already, but Daft Punk have never got a complete remix treatment like this. And it comes courtesy of the entire blogosphere as well.

On May 20th the entire 2005 Human After All album will be remixed and released to the public. Each track will be edited by a different artist, and the artist chosen for each track is at the hands of a different blog. You can check the track list at the bottom for complete details on each selected blog. I’m excited to see five or six different blogs that I read on a daily basis featured for this album, I know that they all have great taste, so hopefully their selection for remixes are just as great as their daily work.

Exclusive (Old) New LCD Soundsystem – “Starry Eyes Original”

Posted in Audio, Downloads with tags , , , , , , on Thursday, May 14, 2009 by Erik Burg

While “Starry Eyes” got a somewhat official release back in 2007 when James Murphy and crew were tearing up your summer playlist, the track was coupled on the tail end of the amazing “Freak Out / Starry Eyes”. Waxploitation and their running Causes benefit album series were lucky enough to score a stand alone studio recording of “Starry Eyes” on Causes 2

LCD        If you haven’t heard the song yet or if you’re a newcomer to the awesomeness that is LCD Soundsystem, “Starry Eyes” might not be the best starting point, but it’s a track that is gleaming with synthesizers more reminiscent of some of the other artists on DFA. The track doesn’t even feature Murphy on vocals, instead trading him in for now Juan Maclean faithful Nancy Whang.

It’s a fairly repetitive track, relying heavily on the echoing snare hits and lyrics that come across as scattered and just plain weird. It’s by no means LCD’s best effort, but it’s a cool gem for long time fans because it introduces and exemplifies various aspects of the band that are rarely seen on their records. Enjoy!

Steve Aoki Gives N.A.S.A. the Remix Treatment on “Gifted”

Posted in Audio, Downloads, Music News with tags , , , , , , , , on Thursday, May 7, 2009 by Erik Burg

N.A.S.A‘s more than audacious project of an album Spirt of Apollo has been polarizing to this point. It’s not quite a hip-hop album, it’s not quite the electro album it tries to be at points either.

Here is where doctor Steve Aoki steps in to cure the problem. Taking what is arguably the album’s best track “Gifted” featuring Kanye West, Santogold, and Lykke Li, Aoki gives the song a strong does of banging electro medicine. Turning many of the choruses into mashed-up tweaked-out bass-ladened masterpieces, Aoki delivers once again. I’ve heard endless amounts of Aoki production, mixes, and remixes already, but I have to say that this might be his strongest to date.

Aoki is able to make “Gifted” sound like it was always this dirty European techno track, going back and listening to the original is almost a let down knowing that it never reaches the peak that Aoki takes it to in this remix. If you enjoy anything in this line of work, it’s worth checking out for sure. Enjoy!

Fleet Foxes release “Mykonos” 7″ and plan tour dates

Posted in Audio, Concert Dates, Downloads, Music News with tags , , , , , , , on Tuesday, May 5, 2009 by Erik Burg

robin-pecknold     The beloved folk-pop group Fleet Foxes have already toured once in support of their chart topping 2008 release of the same name, and now they’re sketching out some more dates for this summer as well.

The tour is fairly scattered, including many festival dates both here and across the pond, but the boys were nice enough to squeeze in a First Avenue show on August 9. Tickets are on sale now for $22 (get them here). If you’re a fan of their records at all they are certainly worth seeing live, when I had the chance to see them at Pitchfork last year the acoustics of an outdoor setting didn’t bog them down at all, and they still sounded amazing. So I know I’m certianly excited for a more intimate setting, but if you’re a big festival goer there are plenty of chances to see them at these fine gatherings:

5-25 Sasquatch

6-23 Hove Festival

6-26 Glastonbury

7-31 All Points West

8-07 Lollapalooza

Fleet Foxes released a new single today as well. The “Mykonos” 7″ features the awesome “False Knight On The Road” on the Bfleetfoxes_mykonos2side. MP3s of False Knight have been floating around on the web for a while now, but here it gets a well deserved official release. “False Knight On The Road” is well worth the purchase, the echoing vocals recorded mostly by frontman Rob Pecknold are much more in line with his or fellow Fox’s J. Tillman solo projects, but the song could have just as easily appeared on their self-titled group debut. If you’re broke though, or out a record player, check the MP3 below for what you’re missing. Enjoy!

The Mars Volta resurfaces with “Cotopaxi” from upcoming Octahedron

Posted in Audio with tags , , , , , , , on Saturday, May 2, 2009 by Ryan Buege

Jon over at Sound Verite was kind enough to clue us in to a new Mars Volta track, the first to surface from the band’s upcoming Octahedron album. This album announcement kind of blindsided me, and the fact that an Mp3 is already on the net is the cherry on top of any already satisfactory dessert. It will hit the streets on June 23rd, but in the meantime, I’m on the edge of my seat for any more morsels of this prog rock perfection to drop on the interwebs. Stay tuned…

ps. Don’t forget about the “solo” side project release ORL has lined up for May! It is another year in which TMV reigns!

The Cool Kids release two new tracks in anticipation of new mixtape

Posted in Audio, Downloads, Music News with tags , , , , , , , on Friday, May 1, 2009 by Erik Burg

The indie friendly hip-hop stars Mikey Rocks and Chuck Inglish have been busy since their stellar Bake Sale EP release in 2008. With the release of the That’s Stupid Mixtape the same year in conjunction with a tour, and now they’re working on their second studio album When Fish Ride Bicycles slated for release later this year. But they’ve got another project ready to drop this week. The Gone Fishing Mixtape will be released Monday May 4th on Cake Recordings.

The tape was produced and performed along side their long time friend Don Cannon, and the two singles that they leaked today display some of their best work to date. “Champions” shows some of the Cool Kids most interesting production to date, adding tons of fuzzed out and over the top bass lines to the usual snare kicks that they’ve perfected by now. I absolutely love this track, the way that the chorus bangs is absolutely unreal. Maybe it’s not quite as smooth as some of their other material and a little bit more of what some people would call “mainstream” but it’s still awesome. The other single, “Popcorn” is a lot more in line with their other material. Some really good samples and some really smooth vocals. It’s always a good mix for Mikey and Chuck.

M.I.A teams up with Kovas to “Hit That”

Posted in Downloads with tags , , , , , on Thursday, April 16, 2009 by Ryan Buege

M.I.A., our favorite hip-hop princess, is back for a quick, sassy ditty where she’s trading rhymes with pop music go-to-guy KOVAS for a new track called “Hit That”. Just a few words to say; I’ve yet to hear an M.I.A. track that doesn’t make me boom-boom-bounce and this instant classic isn’t any different. Jeeze, these vox sting so nice, just right.

You can find the track featured on KOVAS’s new mixtape The Stimulus Package, but we invite you to look below and click that!

Spencer Krug keeps rolling; new Sunset Rubdown track and tour dates

Posted in Audio, Concert Dates, Downloads, Music News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on Thursday, April 16, 2009 by Erik Burg

The indie music scene might as well just be Spencer Krug. The incredibly gifted man has got his hands in nearly every cookie jar. Just last month saw the release of the new Swan Lake album Enemy Mine as one of stronger releases of the early spring, but Krug was not done there, working diligently on the new (and my favorite Krug band) Sunset Rubdown.

Dragonslayer out June 23rd on Jagjaguwar

Dragonslayer out June 23rd on Jagjaguwar

To newcomers the band name sounds like a bad porn movie, but with amazing vocals and an eclectic lineup the band’s 2007 album Random Spirit Lover smothered my attention and had me enraptured for months. My await for the new album is nearly over however as the release date for Dragonslayer has been set for June 23rd on Jagjaguwar records.

Today marks the first real glimpse at the album too, with the release of the track “Idiot Heart” for free download. It’s certainly in line with much of their last album, building from start to finish and marked by the signature Krug voice. About half-way through the track a xylophone or something of that sort hits the track and really takes the song to a more interesting level. I like it, it’s good… not great, but a solid foundation for the album.

MP3: Sunset Rubdown – “Idiot Heart”

Most of all, “Idiot Heart” gets me excited for some touring, and although no Minneapolis date has been set, Sunset Rubdown will hit various coastal venues this summer (fingers crossed for an appearance at a festival or two maybe as well). Check out all the dates below:
