Concert Recap: Amebix, Misery, and War//Plague @ the Triple Rock Social Club

Last night (Wednesday, May 27, 2009), the legendary crust-punk innovators in Amebix played to an enthusiastic crowd of local Minneapolis punks, many of whom at been waiting to see the band for nearly 25 years. Suffice to say, it was the perfect choice to help celebrate the 15th Anniversary of Extreme Noise Records.

The Minneapolis natives and all around cool dudes in War//Plague and Misery kicked off the festivities with some straightforward crust-punk; both bands acknowledged that Amebix was now fulfilling a lifetime dream. I couldn’t agree with them more; it was simply an honor to be able to rock out with such influential musicians as a person who has grown to adore what they first pioneered. Even after 25 years apart, there’s no signs of age or inadequacy, as the songs were breathing with new life in front of the overly joyous packed house of crusties. And just to give credit where credits due, I believe Roy Mayorga (ex-Nausea, Thorn, Soulfly, Sepultura, etc.) must be commended for the thunderous backdrop he lays down for the band, as well; it was completely unexpected to see him behind the kit, but as the flying bodies proved, he definitely belonged there.

From The Rail: Soundset ’09 Part 2 (Videos)

crowd1 A weekend that’s already been heralded by me once, Soundset 2009 brought some of the best hip-hop talent in the nation together in one spot, in our own quaint little Minnesota non-the-less. Yesterday I brought you some amazing pictures I caught from my usual front row spot, and today I’m back to give you some videos from the festival (Part 1 if you missed it). The audio on them isn’t amazing simply due to the sheer volume of the stage, but bear with and enjoy!

I had been waiting years to see El-P, and when he took the stage with DJ Mr. Dibbs Sunday at Canterbury I knew that something amazing was about to happen. Opening with “Tasmanian Pain Coaster” was stunning, but when El-P played “Up All Night” and Dibbs cut on the tables for a good six minutes during it my jaw nearly hit the floor. Check out the couple verses El get through and then watch the madness ensue as Dibbs proves once again why he is one of the best DJs out there. Feast on this sampling!

As I mentioned in Part 1 of my column, P.O.S. has been making tons of headlines for Rhymesayers this year, dropping the spectacular Never Better this winter and tearing it up on tour with Atmosphere all year. When the man of many instruments took the stage Sunday afternoon he unleashed a furry within the crowd that had been unmatched to that point. The high point of his set came when he brought both Dessa and Cecil Otter on stage to perform “Low Light Low Life” off of the aforementioned Never Better. It’s my personal favorite off of the album, and was everything I expected it to be live. There are some great shots of the crowd going crazy during the video as well, so hit play and watch one of the better tracks all day at the main stage of Soundset.

Naysayers aside, I thought that seeing MF Doom play was the highlight of the festival. It’s such a rarity these days, and the elaborate and sometimes comical nature of it all made his appearance and performance well worth the entire ticket price. After the real Villain finally took to the mic I got video of nearly every one of his tracks, seeing as I never wanted to forget what the masked man brought to the un-expecting crowd. The reception of Doom was terrible, and I’m slightly bitter at the crowd for that, but whatever, his new tracks were awesome live. Check out both “Ballskin” and “Gazzillion Ear” below. You’ll notice a slightly different view on the second video, as it was at that time that I jumped the fence and ended up going backstage to later meet Metal Fingers. At any rate though, Enjoy!

School of Seven Bells, “My Cabal”

There’s a new video from School of Seven Bells song “My Cabal”, and I’m obliged to post it because I haven’t been able to get this album off my rotation since I saw them live earlier this year. I’m a bit bummed that I had to miss their set at the Triple Rock last week with Black Moth Super Rainbow, but nevertheless, sometimes conflicts emerge. For those who are interested, I did talk to some friends who attended the next day and they said that both bands were spectacular (although apparently the lighting could have been better.. take note Triple Rock…). Hopefully SVIIB aren’t burnt out on Minneapolis yet though, cause I’m holding out for another performance in the city while they’re still supporting Alpinisms. Until they return, enjoy!

Among Twin Cities residents, it’s well known that an appreciation for the arts permeates our community to an almost absurd degree compared to Everybell & Whistle live at Big V's many other cities in this nation. After moving from the smaller community of Winona to the cities four years ago, I began to really realize how much the arts tend to be integrate into the lives of the people in the area.

Truthfully, over half of my coworkers I’ve had since moving here have been playing in an active band while working the day job at FxO. At one point, literally the entire staff was playing music at some capacity!

I’m always psyched when one of them is playing a show for a variety of reasons; not only is it a great excuse for out-of-work co-worker bonding and free drink tickets (wink, wink), it’s an opportunity to support truly independent local music at the venues that deserve it. On Saturday, my bud Jacob (drummer for Everybell and Whistle) was able to coax me into checking out the sweet post-hardcore/math-rock that he plays in, and so I set out to Big V’s for a night of abrasive noise rock.

Performances came from local dudes in Slapping Purses, Jabberjosh from Kansas, and Iowa’s Be Kind To Your Neighbor & The Tanks, and Everybell and Whistle headlined the night. These are some photos that I took while trying to preserve my Flat Earth Cygnus X-1 Porter from the moshpit…

From The Rail: Sights and Sounds of Animal Collective Live @ First Ave. 5/20/09

AC Avey tall close It’s been a long wait since the release of Merriweather Post Pavillion, since this show was announced, since the tickets went on sale. May the 20th seemed like it would never arrive, and as I spun everything from Spirit They Came to their newest live tracks, the prospect of seeing Animal Collective live seemed more myth than reality.

But enough of the deification. The show has obviously come and gone, but the hype surrounding these guys both as a live act and on record is sure to stay. I got the chance to see the trio last year at the Pitchfork music festival, and they were good. But the set was very short and the band seemed a little passive with their enthusiasm of actually headlining the festival. Last night though, Animal Collective took the stage and commanded an energy from start to finish like few bands can. It was captivating and jaw-dropping while at the same time extremely fun and enjoyable.

The set list was great as well. Obviously playing plenty of tracks from Merriweather, the band also managed to open with the older “Chocolate Girl”, played “Chores” and “Fireworks” from Strawberry Jam, and also knocked out “Who Could Win a Rabbit” from Sung Tongs. Highlights of the night include the comparatively stripped down yet overly amazing version of “My Girls” and the five minute breakdown in the middle of “Fireworks” that came as close to a guitar or drum solo that you could ever see from Animal Collective.

Stage set-up was even stunning. The lighting for the show was spectacular, that is unless you get seizures easily. For the rest of us though, we were treated to strobing color almost constantly, making the sight of Panda Bear singing on “Guys Eyes” even more beautiful than I ever imagined. The giant ball that hung above the stage, along with the giant optical illusion, err, album cover in the background made sure that stage was completely utilized.

It’s a tour and concert I want to be proud to tell my kids about someday. You saw Woodstock? You saw Hendrix? You saw Ringo? I saw Animal Collective, one of the most influential and boundary pushing bands of my age. Describing how important they are to music might be cliche, but Animal Collective might be one of the only bands from this entire subculture worth talking about years down the line.

Concert Photo & Video Recap: Gojira, The Chariot, Car Bomb @ Station 4

Normally I would write a review for every show that I attend, but this week I’m just too jam-packed with finals and post-final celebrations to get my head right and properly give praise to the un-fucking-believable Gojira show (w/ The Chariot and Car Bomb) that I saw on Monday. However, for any doubters, I just want to set one thing straight – Gojira fucking rules. Period.

The band is on fire, playing a first-ever headlining tour in North America that finally brings their entire exceptional back catalog to virgin ears in the U.S., and they couldn’t have been playing in finer form then they were this week. If you have been waiting to see Gojira, now’s the time.

Enjoy the photos and videos that I captured throughout the night! I’m seriously surprised I thought to capture anything worthwhile – I’m not gonna lie; I was enthusiastically going apeshit like my 14 year old self at my first Spineshank show the whole time..

William Elliot Whitmore debuts on UK tv with Jools Holland appearance

The Mississippi river basins modern folk vagabond William Elliot Whitmore recently made a trip over the pond to show his literary and musical vocal talents to the British population, and the results that were captured on film are stunning. Whitmore’s powerful, old-time oration skills are truly a wonder in this day-and-age, and in this video performance for his “Old Devils” he sounds spectacular.

The last time I had the fortune to see Whitmore play live, he was sandwiched between the chaotic grind of local metal band Ambassador Gun and the expansive post-rock of Red Sparowes. Though the bill was quite an unlikely one for Whitmore, he handily won over any doubters with the passion of his exceptional performance and some sensibilities that could easily appeal to any fan of socially aware Midwestern music. It’s great that his career seems to be picking up steam on a global scale, because music this authentic, emotional, and beautiful needs to be honored the world over. Northern Outpost begins second season with Halloween, Alaska as debut guest

Back after only a month-long absence, Northern Outpost has now uploaded the first episode of their summer season online, and for this week’s episode they’re visited by the renowned local indie/ambient/post-whatever troupe Halloween, Alaska at the Owl Recording Studio in Uptown. Still, change is noticeable, with their snowy winter lake intros now replaced by a much more inviting image of our fair city of Minneapolis in the springtime. I don’t think they have done a better job with their choice to kick things off. Halloween, Alaska just released some fantastic songs of jazzy, ambient indie rock via their new album Champagne Downtown, and the intimate confines of the Owl Recoridng Studio are the perfect place to witness the chemistry of the band. After a short interview where they discuss their new album, the originality of the local music scene, and the dedicated people that support the scene, the band gets into a moving rendition of one of the most somber and reflective pieces from the new release, “Be A Man”. It’s a great demonstration of the interesting minds and enormous talent that are just brimming out of this city, and it’s an episode that you don’t want to miss. ..makes me proud to be Minnesotan!

Look forward to the future, as well. In two weeks, the next episode will be added and will feature beloved singer-songer Lucy Michele with the Velvet Lapelles as the profiled band!

Simian Mobile Disco Drop Info On New Album + Two New Tracks

In a year dominated by releases of heavyweights Animal Collective and Grizzly Bear, the London duo of James Ford and James Shaw are aiming to dethrone the likes of said bands and steal the show with their new album Temporary Pleasure. Simian Mobile Disco‘s debut album Attack Sustain Decay Release in 2007 was a bit lost amongst the shuffle thanks to electro monsters Justice, but anybody who took the time to listen to it found a gem of an album. The album combined deep deep bass lines with some Simian-like pop vocals and synths patterns that simply can’t be matched.

So if Attack and SMD’s various remixes are any indication, Temporary Pleasure will surely be a fan favorite again this year and hopefully propelling them into the spotlight much like what what Cross was able to do for the aforementioned Parisian duo. But this time around they’ve thrown a little extra pizzaz into the album, enlisting tons of guest spots on the tracks. Highlights include the likes of Mind Inversion favorite Yeasayer, Alexis Taylor of Hot Chip, and Jamie Lidell. The cameo I’m most interested in hearing, simply do to the risk/reward aspect of it, is Telepathe on the closing track. The female duo (how many times am I going to use that word in this column) that make up the ghostly Telepathe were terrible live, yet terrific on record.

Temporary Pleasure will be released August 17th in the UK on Witchita Records, but SMD have been kind enough to release two of the tracks (unfortunately neither of which feature a guest) already via video. The videos aren’t exactly normal videos though, the tracks are set to live visual backing for each and feature tons of lighting patterns set to the bass and synth hits. Think Windows Media Player on crack. I highly recommend the HD version is you’re running a nice computer. Be excited people… Be very excited.

Metal & Hardcore A/V roundup: Torche, Heaven and Hell, Chimaira, Toxic Holocaust and more

Everyone else has been belly-achin’ on this site for a solid week now about the insane amount of homework that’s on their plate (along with too many paid work hours to count) leading into the final week of school, and for me the situation is no different. I’ve had my head buried in schoolwork for nearly two weeks now, and it doesn’t look like I’ll be completely free for the summer for a few more days yet.

However, this afternoon after my ethics presentation, I was able to spend a few minutes combining all of the best free metal media I’ve collected over the course of the last month into a single, easy-to-digest post for you all to enjoy. It’s not often that I make a post that is packed this full of goodies, so feel free to thank me for catching you up with all these incredible new headbangers. Sit back, and just be ready to keep hitting play! We start thing off with a sweet new super-psychedelic music video from our friends in Torche…

Video: Torche, “Across Shields” (music video) – I’ll start things off with my favorite metal media post of the month. Really, I have no clue what Torche is doing in their new video for “Across Shields” from Meanderthal (available now), but either way it’s hilarious. This stuff makes me feel like I’m a kid again, and I can’t hate that!

Video: Chimaira, “Destroy and Dominate” (music video) – Chimaira is back with The Infection, and their first music video for “Destroy and Dominate” is their most satsifying visual accompaniment yet. Finally, the band’s has a video that gives proper treatment to the tremendous grooves and riffs they crank out. They deserved a video that can convey them as the behemoth metal juggernaut they have truly become, and this is it.

Video: Black Dahlia Murder, Majesty dvd trailer – The dudes in Black Dahlia Murder are coming out with a DVD called Majesty that will finally prove they are as funny as every interviewer says they are. I’m not sure what they mean at the start when they say that they can’t use any copyrighted songs, so I’m hoping that there’s still plenty of ass-kicking death metal to go around.

Video: Heaven and Hell, “Bible Black” (music video) – Everyone in the world knows that Ozzy spends most of his hours making a fool of himself, but what no one’s probably aware of is that the rest of Black Sabbath is still busy making classics without him. Former Black Sabbath vocalist Ronnie James Dio is back with his old bandmates and are now dubbed Heaven & Hell (to avoid confusion), and they are making new rockers such as “Bible Black” that stack up admirably against their legendary back catalog.

Video: Toxic Holocaust, “Nuke The Cross” (music video) – The young Portland thrashers Toxic Holocaust release “Nuke the Cross” their second video from their Relapse debut An Overdose of Death – and they mean business! Ripping video!

MP3: Orcustus, “Asphyxiokenisis” – Underground duo (formerly featuring Infernus and Tormentor from Gorgorth) strongly tied to the legendary Norwegian black metal scene released their self titled debut in March.
