Ma Dukes Talks To Hip-Hop DX About Jay Stay Paid & Busta Rhymes

Posted in Music News with tags , , , on Tuesday, June 2, 2009 by Tim Althaus

madukes Jay Stay Paid dropped today, and I woke up bright and early this morning to go get it at our local Best Buy. I have been listening to it non-stop all day since around 10AM, and I can already tell you that it is spectacular. Hopefully all of you readers out there will go out and support real Hip-Hop and pick up the album, you won’t be let down.

I wish I could have gotten this up earlier, but I’ve been pretty busy for the last few days. Ma Dukes recently sat down with the folks over at Hip Hop DX and talked about a few issues that had to do with Jay Stay Paid. According to the article, Dilla’s estate has new people in charge and things are rapidly turning around from the dis-heartening situation that had been mentioned earlier this year. It appears as though his daughters are going to start getting some of the money that they deserve from their late father’s craft. The Yancey family has been going through so much for the last three years, I am so happy to hear that everything is turning around for them. My guess is that we are going to be hearing a lot more emcees over Dilla treats because, she also mentioned that there won’t be as many troubles when it comes to using Dilla beats.

Ma Dukes also mentione the ever-looming situation with Busta Rhymes. According to Ma Dukes, Busta was wrongfully sued by the last people that were in charge of the Dilla estate (Arty Erk & Micheline Levine). They claimed that Busta didn’t have the right to use those beats, but Ma Dukes begs to differ. She says that Busta wouldn’t take anything from Dilla, and I agree with her, Busta was very passionate about Dilla. Busta has broken the long term vow to use a Dilla beat on every album of his with Back On My B.S. because of the bogus legal situation. I really hope Ma Dukes & Busta can talk and figure things out because I’m pretty sure that Dilla would never want it to be the way it is right now.

Again, you can read the original article here. Make sure you go out and get Jay Stay Paid NOW, it’s a great collection of Dilla’s material. I will have a review up of the album in the next few days.

Album Review: Pacewon & Mr. Green, The Only Color That Matters Is Green

Posted in Music Reviews with tags , , , , , on Saturday, May 30, 2009 by Tim Althaus

only greenAs I mentioned in the Cymarshall Law & Mr. Joeker review, I always seem to be sleeping on shit from the previous year and more often than not it catches up with me. Enter Pacewon & Mr. Green‘s The Only Color That Matters is Green. I remember hearing about this album more than once last year, and every time it was a positive note. This album is the definition of easy listening, because it takes little to no effort to enjoy. Mr. Green’s production is more than exemplary and Pacewon compliments just about every single beat on this album perfectly. Pacewon is a great emcee without spitting overly technical punchlines and metaphors, although he does have some catchy ass lines. These two compliment each other perfectly (Guru & Premier-esque?), and I hope to hear a lot more material from them. Continue reading

Album Review: Method Man & Redman, Blackout! 2

Posted in Music Reviews with tags , , , , , , , , on Saturday, May 30, 2009 by Tim Althaus

blackout-2 The original Blackout! album came out 10 years ago, I picked that shit up when I was 12 years old, and I’ve been playing it ever since. To me Blackout! will always be a classic. Blackout! 2 has Method Man & Redman sticking to the same formula as an incredible two man duo with great production and witty ass rhymes. I am pretty surprised at how mediocre the reviews have been for this album because I personally think it’s an incredible album, and it should hold up as one of the contenders for album of the year. I could pretty much sum up this entire review with one mathematical equation: Method Man + Redman x DOPE beats = one hell of an album. Continue reading

Slaughterhouse To Release Debut Album July 7th

Posted in Music News with tags , , , , , , on Thursday, May 28, 2009 by Tim Althaus

slaughterhouse-missinfo It looks as though the most rhyme potent supergroup is going to be dropping their debut album on July 7th. Joell Ortiz, Crooked I, Royce Da 5’9″ & Joe Budden, also known as Slaughterhouse, are going to be putting out a full length album. According to the Hip Hop DX article I read, they wrote the album in six days. The production will be handled by Alchemist, DJ Khalil & Mr. Porter which means you are going to hear some sick beats at the very least.

I can assure you that this album is going to be well worth the hard earned money you work for. On a seperate tip, this might be one of the most lyrically enhanced albums you will hear for a long time. This is one album I am highly looking forward to, if you love Hip-Hop you should be to.

Havoc of Mobb Deep Talks J Dilla

Posted in Media, Video with tags , , , , on Wednesday, May 27, 2009 by Tim Althaus

As many of you know J Dilla’s new album, Jay $tay Paid comes out this Tuesday on Nature Sounds Records. Havoc of Mobb Deep is one of the cats that is rapping over Dilla’s treats on the record. Havoc shows a great deal of respect for Dilla talking about how good he was at flipping samples, “It’s not what you sample, it’s how you sample it”. Havoc also talks about the first time that he heard Dilla (on a Tribe project), the fact that he would put Dilla in his top 10, how he chose the beat he rapped over on Jay $tay Paid & working with Raekwon.

Fashawn Takes You To “The Outer City”

20090527-fashawnThis is another track that is making me very antsy. This track, “The Outer City”, is Fashawn‘s latest leak off of his Exile produced album Boy Meets World (god I loved that show). I have a feeling that this album is going to be nothing short of amazing because Fash is really tearing things up, and Exile’s production is awesome. This track follows a great narrative by Fashawn as he describes the struggles of living in the outer city and working 10 hour days. This is a great dedication to the average blue collar worker and shouldn’t be missed. Watch out for Fashawn, he’s going to be doing some major things. Make sure you check out Boy Meets World when it comes out in August.

Jake One Takes You To His “Home”

This is the newest single off of Jake One’s Rhymesayers Entertainment masterpiece White Van Music. The track features Vitamin D, C Note, Ish & Maneak B. This track paints a pretty vivid picture of Jake’s hometown of Seattle. You also get a cameo from Sir Mix a Lot in the beginning that is one that you won’t forget (where has he been for like 15 years?).

Finale Gets Some “Issues” Off His Chest

Posted in Audio, Downloads, Media with tags , , , on Wednesday, May 27, 2009 by Tim Althaus

finaleAs I mentioned in an album review I did earlier this month, Finale’s album A Pipe Dream and a Promise is stupendously stellar. This track, “Issues”, is the latest leak off of Finale’s album and offers a harrowing insight into growing up in less than average circumstances. At the same time the song is also a great narrative about making the best of bad situations. The song is produced by Swiss producer Dimlite and according to the e-mail I got, Finale got the beat and wrote this track in an hour. Finale has talent that most emcees would kill for, this track is a great example of this.

Make sure you download this track, and if you haven’t go out and pick up Finale’s debut album A Pipe Dream and a Promise because it’s one hell of an impressive jump into the world of Hip-Hop.
