Prof & St. Paul Slim Bring You Some Recession Music

Posted in Downloads, Media, Video with tags , , , on Tuesday, May 12, 2009 by Tim Althaus

Recession Music Front Cover Here is some more great music for the Mighty Minneapolis. This time it comes to us from Prof & St. Paul Slim. It just so happens that Ant is the executive producer of the album, so you know the production is going to be fire. These two emcees know how to elevate the skill on the mic and I think this album is going to end up being a great collaboration. I remember the first time I heard St. Paul Slim on Atmosphere’s track, off Strictly Leakage, “Crewed Up”. He had one line that went, “I’ma tell ya’ll I’m about to make a small fortune by taking small things and blowing em’ out of proportion”, from that line alone I knew that this guy was going to be sick as hell. The first time I heard of Prof was for his video for “Rocketman“. If I may add, the video for “Rocketman” is absolutely brilliant and Prof sure as hell know how to rock the mic as well.

I will have a review up for you guys real soon, because needless to say I am going to be listening to this album quite a bit the next few days. Make sure you download the album because it’s free!

Album Review: Finale, A Pipedream And A Promise

Posted in Music Reviews with tags , , , , , , on Monday, May 11, 2009 by Tim Althaus

Finale is an emcee from the city of Detroit, Michigan who magnificently marvels me when he flows over the microphone. He has afinalecover voice that’s like a cross between 50 Cent and Kanye West (if I had to say) except for he’s much mightier than the aforementioned names. If you don’t know who Finale is, you probably should get familiar. This is an outstanding opus and a great entrance into the world of Hip-Hop that should be heard by all.

People that know me well know that when it comes to albums, production (to me) is a big determining factor on how I feel. The production on this album is nothing short of incredible and sets the tone of the album. If this was an instrumental album of just beats, I can assure you that I would give it an 8 or 9 alone. I remember seeing the production list and being amazed (J Dilla, Black Milk, Nottz, Flying Lotus & Khrysis to name a few), but what really surprises me more is that the lesser known producers craft concoctions that are just as good as the rest. Dilla Bot Vs. The Hybrid

Posted in Downloads, Media with tags , , , on Monday, May 11, 2009 by Tim Althaus

Jay Stay PAid I still can’t get over the artwork for the new Dilla album (which is featured to the left) because it’s incredible. This is the first track I have had the pleasure of hearing, and it features up and coming Detroit emcee Danny Brown. It was actually up a few days ago over at 2DopeBoyz, but I didn’t have a chance to get it up at the time.

This is a nice Dilla beat that I haven’t heard before (which is always nice), and Danny Brown spits some ridiculous verses over this great instrumental. I want you guys to realize that Danny Brown is an emcee that has some amazing talent. It makes me really happy to hear another great artist coming out of Detroit because it’s a city that just keeps pumping out great sound. I am going to make a conscious effort to get everything that this guy puts out.

Make sure you check out this track because it is incredible. You better also make sure you go out and cop Jay $tay Paid out on Nature Sounds June 2nd.

Wild Style Wednesday Review: Jay-Z, The Blueprint

Posted in Wildstyle Wednesdays with tags , , , , , , on Wednesday, May 6, 2009 by Tim Althaus

jay-z-the-blueprintAlthough you guys don’t hear my talk about Hov very much, I can assure you that he is one of my favorite emcees of all time. In my opinion The Blueprint is his shining moment as an emcee (although many would argue Reasonable Doubt is) without a doubt. This album has pristene production and Jay-Z’s flow, delivery and lyrics on this album are truly top notch. I picked up this album when I was in 8th grade, and I’ve been bumping it ever since. Now that I look back on this album, I can’t believe that I didn’t even think about this record for my top 10 most influential albums. The production on this album is handled by Kanye West (in his prime), Just Blaze, Bink & Eminem. With those names already you know the beats are going to be crazy as hell. Continue reading

Alchemist Talks to PowerPlayed.com

Posted in Media, Video with tags , , on Monday, May 4, 2009 by Tim Althaus

Vodpod videos no longer available.
Hey guys, sorry it has been so long since you have heard from me. I, just like Erik (and most likely Ryan), am falling victim of finals at school and have been sumbmursed in school related activities constantly for the last week. Not only that, but I haven’t really found too much very interesting in music news lately so I haven’t had the urge to write.

This video however is different. I spotted this one over at 2DopeBoyz. Alchemist sat down with the people over at PowerPlayed.com to discuss a variety of issues. I love how they use the beat for “Stuck On You” by Prodigy, it’s easily my favorite beat that Al has ever produced. He talks about his influences from the east and west coast and has a nice metaphor about the body and blood of Hip-Hop. Next he talks about how DJ Muggs basically got Alchemist introduced to Mobb Deep and started that connection going. The part I love about the video is it has a clip of Al building a beat in the studio for his upcoming album, he is a genius when it comes to making beats. Make sure you check this one out, and go out and get Chemical Warfare May 19th.

Wild Style Wedensday Review: Immortal Technique, Revolutionary Vol. 2

Posted in Wildstyle Wednesdays with tags , , on Wednesday, April 29, 2009 by Tim Althaus

revolutionary_vol_2 After listening to this album, you will realize that Immortal Technique is one intelligent ass dude. He is one of the most passionate, intelligent and furious emcees I’ve heard. He attacks the microphone like a serial killer, and every track on this album is a testament to this. This album absolutely dominated my CD player for almost two years when I bought it. Immortal Technique truly is a revolutionary. Most of the rhymes that Technique spits, are way deeper in meaning than you could even fathom. The metaphors and similes that he spits are pretty close to unparalleled.

The album basically starts off with “Point of No Return“, and this track really paints the picture for what the rest of the album is going to be like. Over the eerie beat Tech spits, “This is the point of no return nigga you better believe this/Mary Magdalene giving birth to the children of Jesus”. The track “Peruvian Cocaine” will truly make you question the legitimacy of the war on drugs with an incredible narrative from Immortal Technique, Tonedeff, Poison Pen, C-Rayz Walz and others about the cocaine trade. “Harlem Streets” is a dark and dismal picture of the city that Technique was raised and lives in.

The highlight of the album (and maybe his career) is a track entitled “Industrial Revolution“. The lyrical display on this track is nothing short of amazing, “The “Bling Bling Era” was cute but it’s about to be done/I leave you full of clips (full eclipse) like the moon blockin’ the sun/My metaphors a dirty like herpes but harder to catch, like an escape tunnel in prison that I started from scratch”. He tells everyone why he’s not recognized very much, “…nobody’s better than me they just got better marketing schemes.”

This album is a great example of vivid emceeing at it’s very finest. The raw lyricism displayed on this album is what every emcee should aspire for. There is definitely a reason why this album was on constant repeat for years, because it’s a great fucking album.

Apparently Clipse aren’t bullshittin’…

Posted in Music News with tags , , on Tuesday, April 28, 2009 by Tim Althaus

brothers-thortonMalice & Pusha T aren’t kidding when they talk about birds, pies, or any coke reference for that matter. Apparently the ex-manager for Clipse has been indicted on charges of leading a $10 million drug ring. According to the article at HipHop DX, Anthony Gonzalez has been running the drug ring mostly out of his club Encore Lounge in Virginia.

The article goes on to say that Gonzalez has pushed over a ton of marijuana and one hundred pounds of cocaine since 2003. Even though his operation is out of Virginia, his operation has supposedly reached as far as South America. The indictment on the individuals involved claims that,  “the people that were involved put themselves in the position of music producers, rappers, entrepreneurs, club owners, clothing designers and other legitimate occupations to conceal their real identity”.

Gonzalez was the manager for the Brothers Thornton up until 2006. Clipse has still not publicly commented on the issue. They are currently managed by Steven Victor.
