Get Your Georgie Fruit On

Georgie Fruit, the alter ego of Of Montreal frontman Kevin Barnes, and his sex crazed erotic fantasy world have been brought to the masses on Of Montreal’s new tour in support of the modern day Ziggy Stardust album Skeletal Lamping. Not only is the album release over the top (coming packaged with a shirt, lamp, sticker, bag, etc.) and can be found at Polyvinyl Records, but the new stage set is absolutely ridiculous. Of Montreal has been known to put on a pretty elaborate show in the past (i.e. dumping applesauce on the crowd) but the horse-riding, dancer choreographed, and gallow-filled stage set at their show in New York this past weekend takes the cake. Barnes and Co. played 25 songs, but what’s more impressive may be the 30 costume changes throughout. Lucky for us midwesterners, Of Montreal will take their traveling circus of a stage to both Minneapolis on October 25th (which yours truly has tickets to) and to Milwaukee the next night. Get your tickets for the First Ave show here or for the performance at the Pabst Theatre in Milwaukee here. Don’t miss an opportunity to see this once in a life-time spectacle, or twice in a life-time if you were as scenester in the 80’s and a big Bowie fan.

Little Brother: Passion Flower

Well, it looks as if my boys from the Raleigh/Durham area are back at it again with another single (on a sidenote 9th produced the track, that’s why he’s in the picture). The new track is called “Passion Flower” and it is going to be off of their re-release and “drama” free mix tape Separate But Equal (the drama free part is that there will be no DJ on the mixtape, and the mix tape will also feature 3 previously unreleased tracks (It’s kind of similar of the re-release of the And Justus for All mixtape). Out of the three mixtapes (Chittlin Circuit 1.5, Seperate But Equal and And Justus For All) that LB has put out, Separate But Equal is my favorite, and I am going to be very interested to hear what they do with it. It’s great to hear Pooh and Phonte working with 9th Wonder again, they’ve done so many amazing things for Hip-Hop in the past and hopefully they can do the same in the future. With Pooh and Phonte being so busy, who knows if we will see another Little Brother album this year, my guess is going to be no (Phonte has the new Foreign Exchange, and Big Pooh has a new album he is working on right now). Please go and get Separate But Equal: Drama Free Edition on November 4th when it drops. In the mean time, sit back, relax and enjoy this beautiful Little Brother track as it hits your eardrums, because you know there is nothing like a 9th Wonder, Big Pooh and Phonte track: Dope beats, dope rhymes what more could ya’ll want?

Boredoms plans a Deluxe CD/DVD release for 77BoaDrums

Are you familiar with with the psychedelic ambient noise makers in Japan’s Boredoms? If not, do yourself a favor and get informed on that now. For those of you already on the boat, I’m sure you heard about the near-mythical 77BoaDrums concert that took place. An event in which the ever-unpredictable Boredoms gathered an orchestra of 77 drummers from various backgrounds and with kits of varying sizes for an epic syncopated jam of primitive, avant-pyschedlia. Well, now thankfully for those of us who were not fortunate enough to attend the 7/7/07 concert in Brooklyn, Boredoms will be releasing their poly-rhythmic drum jam from that day as a CD/DVD on November 26.

Their set that day suceeded in accomplishing something that was altogether unbelievable (and was only to be superseded this year by the 8/8/08 88BoaDrums set featuring 176 drummers). 77BoaDrums
can be thought of as a film, directed by Jun Kawaguchi, and even the concept of the project follows through to the ediiting. The movie is 89 minutes, which is approximately 77 minutes and 777 seconds you want to think too hard about it. Although it appears that the DVD won’t contain the entire 77BoaDrum film, it is clear that this project is one that’ll be worth the buy. If you want to see the entire concert again, you have to make it to the screening of 77BoaDrum Tokyo’s NYTFGP Film Festival in New York on Monday, October 13. Director Kawaguchi will be present for a Q&A at the first of two screenings scheduled that night, and will introduce the second. Animal Collective reveals their plans for a new album

Today is a happy day! Animal Collective have announced Merriweather Post Pavilion, their full-length studio follow-up to their 2007 release Strawberry Jam! According to a press release from Domino Records, the album was recorded in Oxford, Mississippi at Sweet Tea recording studio with Ben Allen and is due January 20 in CD, double LP, and digital formats from Domino.

Over the last few years, these extremely prolific psych/experimental artists have lifted their unique presence outside of the underground and onto the mainstage but have lost none of their vibrant, oddball, folksy charm. Their intention remains hellbent on exploring the depths of their artistic consciousness, and for that reason Animal Collective can never do any wrong. After the release of Panda Bear’s solo album this year and personally witnessing their mind-blowing headline performance at the Pitchfork this summer, my anticipation for this album is as high as any album this year. It’s great to watch your favorite artists stay so true to themselves as they mature, especially when they are still churning out the most spine-chillingly beautiful music you know.. So mark your calendars, the date has been set – JANUARY 20TH!

Black Milk: Elec (Mixtape)

Detroit up and coming super producer and emcee Black Milk released a free mixtape called Elec today. This mixtape is a composition of all of his work from his first LP Popular Demand up until this point in time. His follow up to the critically acclaimed (and one of my personal favorite albums) Popular Demand will be the album Tronic which will be released on October 28th on Fat Beats records. He released the first single off the album “Give The Drummer Some” as well as the completely scorching track “The Matrix“. Black Milk first came on the scene in the group B.R. Gunna. He also started doing production for Slum Village after Jay Dee left the group. In my opinion this is the guy to watch for. Black Milk’s name will be a household name after Tronic comes out. The way I see it, after this album, there’s a really good chance you will be saying Black Milk’s name with Dilla, Premier, Pete Rock & the rest of the legends that you associate with great beat making (not to mention he is an incredible emcee). PLEASE do yourself a favor if you love good Hip-Hop and buy this album on the 28th, it’s going to be something special.

Eugene Hütz and Max Cavalera plan a meeting of the minds

Two of modern rock and metal’s most creative and ambititious frontmen, Eugene Hütz from Gogol Bordello and Max Cavalera from Soulfly/Cavalera Conspiracy/ex-Sepultura, have announced to Brazillian press that they are planning a future collaboration! In a O Globo magazine interview with Hütz, he stated “doing something as friends is easy, organizing something is much more difficult — and in any case, everyone is my friend!” when he was asked about his plans for future collaborations. He then went on to say that the Cavalera collaboration had already been discussed and is pretty much certain at this point.

Personally, this is an announcement coming from left-field, but I welcome it with my arms open as wide as they’ll stretch! It has been an extremely busy year for Cavalera – with his new Cavalera Conspiracy project with his brother Iggor having released their debut Inflikted in March and Soulfly releasing their most recent full-length Conquer only 3 months ago. With a project with Eugene Hütz to look forward to now as well, there is no reason to long for Cavalera to return to Sepultura like there might have been 5 or 10 years ago. Both Hütz and Cavalera could arguably be considered the most charasmatic and unique band leaders in their corner of music. And while Soulfly has been busy infusing their blend of groove metal and thrash with elements of world music, dub, and reggae, Gogol Bordello executed a brand of Punk rock that wears their Gypsy/East European heritage on their sleeve. When you consider that Soulfly even recorded with Gypsys in Serbia on two of their last 3 albums, it becomes clear that these guys are on the same page. This is going to be one to look forward to!

Foreign Exchange Put Out Sophomore LP: Leave It All Behind

European beat sensation Nicolay and Little Brother emcee Phonte (together as Foreign Exchange) just realeased the digital copy of Leave It All Behind on Tuesday (The hard copy comes out on the 10th in Europe and the 14th in the States). Phonte has been on the scene since Little Brother go together back in 1998. Nicolay and Phonte starting making music back in 2004 with the Foreign Exchange album Connected that debuted on record label BBE. The first album they put out was truly an innovation to the genre of Hip-Hop, but also to genres such as soul and R&B. If Leave It All Behind is anything like Connected was we may have another classic on our hands folks. I highly encourage you to go out and get the digital copy or purchase the album when it comes out on October 14th. You can be sure that once I get a good listen of this album I will have a full review up.

Evidence: The Layover

Evidence released his single titled “The Layover” from his forthcoming EP called The Layover EP today and judging by the sounds of it EV is going to be putting out more material that is going to make its mark. Evidence has been one of the hardest working cats in the Hip-Hop game over the last year. He is putting out a free mixtape (The Layover Mixtape) sometime this month, The Layover EP (Due out November 25th), Cats & Dogs (His new album due out next year) and there is a new Dilated Peoples album in the works for next year. Evidence made his mark on the scene as a solo artist last year with the critically acclaimed The Weatherman LP which was easily my favorite album of last year and featured the songs: Mr. Slow Flow and Chase The Clouds Away. All of the “layover” material coming out in the next few months is supposed to “hold us over” until next year when his new album comes out. To be honest I have been patiently waiting until he puts out more material. Evidence is quickly rising to the top of my favorite artists in the game.

Grails’ Doomsdayer’s Holiday Released Today

Mixing a blend of heavy rock, blues, psychedelic sound wave experimentation, and mid-east guitar riffs, Grails stands out from similar genre, former label mates such as ISIS, Red Sparowes, and Neurosis. Now situated on the Temporary Residence Limited (Mono, Explosions in the Sky and Maserati) label, who also released their amazing 2007 LP Burning Off Impurities they release Doomsdayer’s Holiday.

I haven’t had a chance to pick this album up yet, but listening to the two tracks they’ve released on their MySpace page, I am very excited to hear the full length. The first track I listened to was “Reincarnation Blues”, which starts out with the slightly off key wobble of an instrument you’d more likely hear in a Turkish bazaar than on a heavy rock album. They do a great job of blending this instrument into the lead guitar line, while layering on strings, and keeping the drums nice and heavy. The song fades out into an ambient breakdown, but begins to build steam toward the end, making what I can only assume will become a buildup into the next track.

I can’t wait to get my hands on this full length, so everyone who likes interesting music with a touch of greatness should also pick this up right now. Right, now.

Brother Ali Speaks on Jake One’s forthcoming album White Van Music

One of the most conscious and beloved emcees from the Rhymesayers Entertainment gives his opinion on Jake One‘s new album White Van Music. The album comes out Oct. 7th on Rhymesayers Entertainment and has an extensive guest list that contrasts main stream Hip-Hop as well as Underground favorites. I believe this album promises to be one of the top contenders for Hip-Hop album of the year. Jake has been a producer for everyone from 50 Cent and G-Unit to MF Doom and De La Soul.
