I was really upset when I found out about Reflection performing at the University of Minnesota way to late (Ryan: which, unfortunately for EVERYONE in MN, he ended up cancelling late last night anyway. No word whether it will be rescheduled, but considering it was planned exclusively for the U’s Spring Jam festivities, it’s doubtful). These guys put on one hell of a show, as you can clearly see from the video. The sound quality isn’t the absolute greatest, but you can tell that the show is sick as hell. Kweli tears it up as he rolls through the set, make sure you check this one out. Kwe performs his verse on Kanye’s “Get em’ High”, The new Reflection track “Back Again” and Kweli’s always classic “Get By”.

Underground ambient US black metal entity Xasthur has finished putting together the All Reflections Drained LP that has been recorded throughout 2007 and 2008
(with M.H. as guest vocalist), and Hydrahead is now prepared to release the album on May 26th in 2xLP, 2xCD, and even as a cassette tape. As with all Hydrahead releases, the packaging is looking very impressive for the vinyl with cover art from Tim Lehi and photography by Faith Coloccia – the 2xCD is encased in a DVD style digipack and features a second disc of bonus material, including alternate versions, unreleased material, and several covers. Knowing how reclusive Xasthur’s Malefic (Scott Connor) is, I didn’t expect that we’d get to hear much from the release before Hydrahead officially sent it out, but thankfully there has been some media uploaded from the release. The Bronx shred in (cyber?) shark-infested waters on “Knifeman” music video

The Bronx recently passed through the Twin Cities with Trash Talk for a Triple Rock gig to support their new album The Bronx (III), so it’s presumable that we won’t be able to see them here in person in Minnesota for a while. Thankfully, the best hard-rock album of 2008 is getting some more video accompaniments to be broadcast around the globe, with Justin Enright and Tyler Ford directing a video for the band’s infectious groovy hardcore boot-stomper “Knifeman”. What seems to be a casual under-water shred-fest quickly turns into a bloodbath as the rockers struggle to outswim the agile (cyber?) shark that somehow infiltrated their pool… Enter the pool with these punks, if you dare to tempt the virtual spawn of Jaws.

Of Montreal debut two new songs, continue covers rampage

Of Montreal continue their romp through the world of covers. Though my favorite to this point is either “Day Man” from It’s Always Sunny or “Melody Day” by Caribou, this cut of The Beatles White Album classic “I’m So Tired” is pretty great.

Performed in-studio for 90.7 WFUV, Kevin Barnes and friends strip the song down just a little bit but build to an ending that’s just as sentimental as the original song. I’ve been a huge fan of nearly all OM’s acoustic studio tracks in this nature (including the awesome tracks they did for The Current here in Minneapolis). Barnes’ unique voice and styling has a way of shining even more than on record in this format which is pleasing to note, along with his awesome scarf-glasses combo which he probably has patented by now.
And if you missed it earlier in the week, Of Montreal played a few new tracks at the Music Hall of Williamsburg as well. It’s live, so yeah the audio isn’t perfect, but what is for certain is that OM hasn’t missed a beat since Skeletal Lamping. The tracks are little bit more rock-ish than anything they’ve done to this point, but it all seems a natural progression if you listen to their last two or three albums. They can do no wrong for me, especially after seeing them on their off-the-wall tour this fall. Enjoy!

My favorite alt. rockers are back with some new noise, and I’m happy to report that it sounds very much like the Sonic Youth I love! “Sacred Trickster” is the first song to see a release from their latest album The Eternal, their follow-up to Rather Ripped, which hits stores on June 9th via Matador.. Here is the 4th episode of “your favorite show about nothing in particular”, The Sunday Show. The topic in this episode is skiing (note the beautiful Mind Inversion banner in the beginning of the episode). They also talk a little bit about snowboarding, but all three guys predominantly ski so that is the bulk of discussion. Another thing that I didn’t mention that I love about this show, is that they talk about what beers they are drinking on every episode. I am the type of guy that loves to try new brews, and this is a perfect place for suggestions. They discuss their ski trip up north, and some of their favorite places to ski in North America. Wild Style Wednesday Review: Mos Def & Talib Kweli, Black Star

This is another album that almost made my top 10 most influential albums. The lyrical content that is displayed on this album is damn near untouchable. Mos Def & Talib Kweli go together like mashed potatoes and gravy. They mesh on just about every level that you can possibly imagine. This album came out originally in 1998 and this is an album that I feel will echo in the hallways of Hip-Hop for a long time. I remember being in eleventh grade and learning about poetic devices. When I found this album, it was the epitome of everything I had learned about.
From the minute that “Astronomy (8th Light)” kicks off, Kwel & Mos pass the mic back and forth shouting similes and metaphors faster than most people can comprehend. “Definition” is a great upbeat track with Mos & Kweli rapping about the things going on in the country (at the time), and why they are the “definition” of a group. FREE show: Andrew Broder, Mountains, Frail By Design @ U of M’s the Whole tomorrow

University of Minnesota’s Spring Jam is going on all weekend, and besides being the first major celebration of drinking around campus for the spring, the event usually is the first major free music event in the city, as well. Unofficially, the festivities kick off tomorrow when NYC’s acoustic experimentalists in Mountains descend into the Whole at U of M’s Coffman Union for a free gig with Minneapolis-based ambient/experimental musician Andrew Broder of Fog and Madison ambient post-rockers in Frail By Design (featuring bass skills from good friend and fellow U student Dan Jin). All three acts will be supporting new releases; Frail By Design just released their Time Traveler EP, Mountains third full length Choral came out in February, and Broder is having one of the most prolific years imaginable, so far self-releasing 9 albums of his solo experimentations for free download via a personal online directory (including one called Spirals that was uploaded yesterday!). If unconventional rock is your sort of thing, or even if you just want to start your Spring Jam a bit early, come down to the Whole to lose yourself in some ethereal, unorthodox jams from a superb collection of up-and-coming acts. For the price of FREE, this is a concert you can’t afford to miss.

Here is an awesome (and truly beyond rare) video of Thomas Bangalter of Daft Punk playing a nearly 30 minute Dj set in France in 2005.
Awesome would be an understatement. The man spins not only his own material but a plethora of different club bangers as well (Prodigy?!). It’s a must see for any fan of Daft Punk or for any fan of electronic music. I’ll stop talking so you can go watch.
