Mind Inversion’s Sound Immersion 05/09 (Vol. 4)

May Sound Immersion

The team here at Mind Inversion are back to offer you faithfuls another monthly mix tape. This month we’re going with a summer theme. Some of songs feature summer in the title, and others simply remind us of this time of year. Though it’s not yet 90 and humid here, the end of the spring semester just screams summer!  I just barely managed to stay sane throughout my first year, and many of the other contributors have also been working diligently towards their degrees. The picture is a nice reminder of Mind Inversion’s home here in the midwest, a place most of us will be at for at least part of the summer. So let’s all celebrate with this terrific mix, dedicated to the greatest time of the year. Enjoy the sun, enjoy the freedom, but most of all enjoy the music!

This is some of the best news I’ve heard all year long. Black Milk, Sean Price & Guilty Simpson have signed their deal with Duckdown Records for the Random Axe project. My anticipation for this album is crazy because I know it is going to be one of the best of the year. Listen to Sean Price as he makes everything official!

Album Review: Finale, A Pipedream And A Promise

Posted in Music Reviews with tags , , , , , , on Monday, May 11, 2009 by Tim Althaus

Finale is an emcee from the city of Detroit, Michigan who magnificently marvels me when he flows over the microphone. He has afinalecover voice that’s like a cross between 50 Cent and Kanye West (if I had to say) except for he’s much mightier than the aforementioned names. If you don’t know who Finale is, you probably should get familiar. This is an outstanding opus and a great entrance into the world of Hip-Hop that should be heard by all.

People that know me well know that when it comes to albums, production (to me) is a big determining factor on how I feel. The production on this album is nothing short of incredible and sets the tone of the album. If this was an instrumental album of just beats, I can assure you that I would give it an 8 or 9 alone. I remember seeing the production list and being amazed (J Dilla, Black Milk, Nottz, Flying Lotus & Khrysis to name a few), but what really surprises me more is that the lesser known producers craft concoctions that are just as good as the rest. Elzhi Gets “Deep” With Some Help From Black Milk

Posted in Downloads, Media with tags , , , on Monday, April 20, 2009 by Tim Althaus

elzhi-spitHere is another quality track from your boy Elzhi. This one is produced by none other than the great Black Milk. Elzhi spits a vicious flow over this one (just like any track) and Black Milk provides a perfect back drop. This track is apparently off of his upcoming project The Feed. Make sure you look out for anything that this guy has coming out (you know we will keep you posted) because he’s on his way to becoming one of the greats.

Black Milk Brings “Mo Power” Than Anyone

Posted in Downloads, Media with tags , on Tuesday, April 7, 2009 by Tim Althaus

up-black_milk To me, Black Milk news never seems to get old. I got this track in an e-mail from Audible Treats today. This track is definitely much different than anything you will hear Black Milk do. He uses a real jazzy beat that most emcees probably wouldn’t even attempt to rhyme over. This makes for a nice challenge for Black, and he handles it quite well if I do say so. The best rhyme comes at the end of the track, “I’m a be honest/You can’t compete, can’t beat Tronic/If you ain’t hear me nigga rewind it, or just be silent”.

This is a great track that shows how truly versatile Black Milk really is. Who knows, we may see a Jazz album from him sometime in the near future, I sure as hell wouldn’t put it past him with his talent.

Black Milk rocks Manchester

Posted in Media, Video with tags , , , on Wednesday, March 25, 2009 by Tim Althaus

Watching this video was pretty much the highlight of my day. It also makes me want to see a live Black Milk show more and more. Watch this video as he completely destroys his set and tears it up for the fine city of Machester. He starts off the set with one of my favorites from Tronic, “Long Story Short”, and then follows with “So Gone” which was a track from Popular Demand. I love when Black jumps on the MPC and starts playing around with the beat for “The Matrix”. This guy has some serious skills and there’s no reason you shouldn’t check this. If you haven’t picked up Tronic yet I don’t know if there’s any hope for you…

Black Milk is having “Dreams”

Posted in Downloads with tags , , , , on Monday, March 23, 2009 by Tim Althaus

artist_blackmilk-realdMan it seems like the year that Black Milk has been having can only happen in a dream. He released (in my opinion) the best album of last year, and is coming out with more deadly venom this year with a wide array of projects (Random-Axe, Tracks on the new Slum Village, working with KRS on a track).

This track “Dreams” is a web exclusive that Black Milk released and it sounds much like anything else he has done in the past, fire as hell. The beat starts out with a hard hitting bass to snare and fades to a nice piano and synth loop. Continue reading

Black Milk Talks Hip-Hop, The D & J Dilla

Posted in Video with tags , , , , , , , on Tuesday, March 3, 2009 by Tim Althaus

Vodpod videos no longer available.

I love being able to hear about any news that pertains to Black Milk. As I’ve said numerous times in the past, this guy is a phenom and he’s “Putting the “D” on his back like a shirt that he bought”. He’s been coming out with some of the most consistent Hip-Hop for the last few years with two critically acclaimed albums. I also gave his album Tronic which came out last year the nod for album of the year.

This is a really good interview that was put on by Carter Cartel and it’s very in depth. The interview rings in at almost 12 minutes long, but I think it’s totally worth it. There are a lot of issues that get discussed here. Black talks about performing to a crowd full of white kids in Boulder, Colorado, who he would work with now (dead and alive) and that Random Axe collabo that’s going to be absolutely ridiculous. Random Axe is a super group composed of Guilty Simpson, Sean Price & Black Milk. Not to mention that Black Milk will be doing production for the entire album. Black Milk also brings up, of course, the late great J Dilla and what it was like working with him as well as how much of an influence he is on Black Milk.

All in all a great interview. Make sure you watch the video and watch out for Random Axe dropping sometime this year.

Video: Black Milk, “Losing Out” (Featuring Royce Da 5’9″)

Posted in Video with tags , , , , on Thursday, February 12, 2009 by Tim Althaus

Man, today has been an insanely good day for me as far as posting is concerned. Videos were released for two of my favorite songs from the last year. The first one was “For Whom the Bell Tolls” by Evidence, and now “Losing Out” by Black Milk. This song was a clear stand out on Black Milk’s album Tronic. The beat on this song is absolutely amazing (the sample is incredible, I heard the original song while riding around with my dad weeks ago) and Black Milk & Royce Da 5’9″ destroy every bar on this track as if it was their sole mission. I can’t tell you enough, if you haven’t picked up Tronic yet you should be kicking yourself in the ass. Make sure you watch out for Royce’s album Street Hop due out soon!
