Audio Mix: Hybrid, Transitions Mix

Hybrid, the electronic brainchild of UK’ers Mike Truman and Chris Healings, remains one of my favorite techno/ electronic groups to date. Their stylish mix of trance, progressive house, and their inventive drum breaks cement their reputation as a very solid DJ act. Their debut LP “Wide Angle” came out in 1999, and although I didn’t discover it until a few years after the release, their amazing mix of electronic beats and live string arrangements pulled me into the diverse world of techno, and broke ground for a future love of all things electronic.

Their distinctive style has evolved into something all their own, but comparisons can be drawn from such powerhouse electronic acts such as Massive Attack, Portishead, John Digweed, and Underworld. Many live trance acts mar their performance (in my opinion) with unnecessary vocal samples, often in the flavor of a female vocalist voicing shallow philosophy or heartbreak, but Hybrid uses a more opera style female vocals very tastefully, and not as a main aspect of their live mixes.

Their latest live mix, which debuted on Transitions (Kiss 100) in the UK (DJ’d by John Digweed) last October, draws from a great list of remixed tracks:

These tracks flow effortlessly into each other, creating a great mix for a late night dance party or as a soundtrack to any other activity: Driving, gaming, or smoking. Starting with the more chill Wainwright, and transitioning into the next track, this mix gains steam, eventually building into the deep trance, low frequency beats I love Hybrid for.

Mind Inversion’s Sound Immersion 02/09 (Vol. 1)

The time has finally come for us at Mind Inversion to come together to release our very first of what promises to be a very long line of monthly playlists to rock your body and soothe your weary eardrums. After some friendly prodding from our trusted pals over at PerfSpot (wink), each of our current contributors crept out from the shadows to put in their two cents about what they’re listening to this month. As any consistent reader of our site might hope, this sampler presents you with the kind of unbelievable variety that I don’t think you can find anywhere else. When listening, keep this in mind.

It is also important to remember that most of the people contributing to this list have been stranded in the subzero temperatures of Minnesota for more than a few weeks. Clearly, there is an heavy air of reflection throughout this simultaneously uplifting and introspective wintery mix. Meanwhile, a couple of our contributors are transplanted out West right now, displaced from their familiar Midwestern surroundings; Eddie for school, and Dan on an extended journey of self discovery. Dan’s camera captured the magnificent image you see as the album cover above during his ongoing trip through California and Oregon.

Audio Mix: MIXHELL, Mishka presents Keep Watch Vol. 5

Iggor Cavalera and Laima Leyton have a very busy life even when he’s not out on the road with his brother Max in the Cavalera Conspiracy. Ever since he left Sepultura in 2006, he and his wife have been working as the brilliantly creative Brazillian electro-duo MIXHELL, touring the world and gaining much praise within underground beat circles for their MPC/turntable/drum-driven beat heavy ruckus. Oh yeah, and they’ve got FIVE young children (who just so happen to operate MIXHELL’s blog – cute!). It’s a very hard task to make a serious leap from the metal community to the djing world, but with some good friendships (such as their association’s with James Murphy or Justice) and some awesome music, anything can happen. …Even while raising a family.

Last week, our favorite overseas electronic connection posted a superb mix that MIXHELL completed for Mishka‘s Keep Watch! series, and it deserves a mention here. Just listen to the opening Metallica “For Whom The Bells Tolls” Intro! How are these guys NOT playing sold out shows in big American clubs? They need to get on a good tour sometime soon, because something tells me that if American electro/dance fans got wind of MIXHELL, they’d storm the scene.

New Audio: Camera Obscura, “My Maudlin Career”

“I just want a good tune and a melody, and if somebody says it’s good, I guess I get a lot from that” remarks Camera Obscura’s Tracyanne Campbell in an interview for Under the Radar magazine. The first track from their highly anticipated release on 4AD records, due out April 20th, was released on the band’s website earlier today, and I’m happy to report that it’s exactly what Campbell aimed for. It’s a good tune, nothing mesmerizing or great, but a very good tune. The melody is there, though often muffled by the airy guitar and echoing snare hits.

“I don’t think it will be much different, I don’t think we’re the kind of band that will all of a sudden start doing wacky things like dance tracks. We do what we do. We’re five or six people, and we play the instruments that we play, and sometimes we’ll bring folks in to play the things that we can’t” – Tracyanne Campbell

It’s definitely not a deviation from any Camera Obscura release in the past, which gives me high hopes for their upcoming album, entitled My Maudlin Career also. The emotion is still there too, the lyrics are great and the way the song is arranged, much like their other material, the happiness of the music itself is juxtaposed against somewhat pessimistic lyrics. I have to say though, the piano keys are very catchy, and a terrific addition to the track.

Dilla Day Mix by Alteezimo

I know most of you have probably heard these songs at sometime or another, but I just wanted to highlight my favorite tracks by my idol. Live Audio Bootleg: Jaylib, Live at the Henry Fonda Theater, 4/2/04

Here it is folks, the first Jaylib show with Dilla and Madlib. I decided to check out Stones Throw‘s website figuring that they may have some current news about Dilla on this gracious day. It turns out that they posted the first ever Jaylib show from 2004. This set was spun by J Rocc (of the World Famous Beat Junkies Crew) and features Melo-D (also of the Beat Junkies) on commentary and a special guest appearance from Common. This show was actually for the celebration of the Madvillain release party. Make sure you check this one out, there is no way that it can dissapoint. Two of the greatest minds of their time on one stage, shut shit down.

FREE Album Download: Iron Thrones, Visions of Light

Iron Thrones is a band that truly embodies their name in several aspects. Not to be too corny, but the band hails from our own iron-rich state of Minnesota, and (despite their relatively short time playing together) you can easily consider them to be one of several crown jewels that the currently burgeoning and heavily varied Minneapolis metal scene has to offer. This is an epic progressive death metal quartet (though, on the lookout for another guitarist) that could easily find resonance with fans of Opeth, Death, Between the Buried and Me, Converge or even maybe post-rock like Mogwai. That’s not to say that Iron Thrones really follows in any of these bands footsteps though, as they have begun to perfect their own unique focused sound. Even on this debut, Visions of Light, the band achieve a rare and organic balance of naturalistic melodies and brutal shred. The album is the embodiment of yin-and-yang, a dense atmospheric album to one man and a nuanced progressive headbanger to another. Right now, it’s doing wonders for my ears.

Clearly the band knows how to treat its fans, as well. As such, these guys have posted their entire new album, Visions of Light, online for download. The cool thing is that they’ve gone the Radiohead way of things and made it available for free, “donation” through Amazon, Itunes, etc., or as a hard copy purchase. I’ve never heard how this model has worked out for a local underground metal band (as opposed to juggernauts like RH and Rez), and there’s no word when their $500 quadruple gatefold limited pressing with an optional commentary becomes available, but I really don’t see how it could hurt. There’ll still be many opportunities to support them and purchase hard copies when you’re seeing Iron Thrones in the live setting. They’ve got these area shows lined up, including a performance in Burnsville tomorrow:

Audio: Big Business premiere “Gold and Final”

Big Business got back from their tour with the Melvins not so long ago, and in the meantime they’ve finished up recording sessions for their latest album, Mind the Drift. The ever-reliable Hydrahead Records will be putting out this third full-length of lumbering, cerebral, retro-stoner metal in April 2008. It’s notable that it’s the band’s first release to feature their new guitarist and third member Toshi Kasai; the mix on this one sounds stronger than any I’ve heard from them yet. Listen in!

Audio: Radiohead vs. M.I.A., “Surprise Paper Planes (ComaR Mash)”

So, maybe everyone on the planet has heard Maya’s “Paper Planes” in one form or another; either in its original smash hit form or one of the millions of remixes that sampled the song over the course of the last year. The song was so well played that it even inspired the mock Grammy category “Best Use of M.I.A.’s “Paper Planes””in the most recent issue of Wired (issue 17.02, p. 48). However, courtesy of ComaR and MN’s own Above the Fold, we are proud to present an awesome mashup of Radiohead’s ‘No Surprises’ and M.I.A’s ‘Paper Planes’. Whether you wanted to hear this song again or not, I strongly suggest you follow the link and listen in.. this late into the game, and it might be one of the better one’s to be released yet.
