Mr. Gaspar does the mash with Daft Punk and Boys Noize

Posted in Audio, Downloads with tags , , , , , , , , on Monday, February 23, 2009 by Erik Burg

mr-gasparI’m kind of disappointed in myself for not posting more remixes and mashups on here, seeing as I listen to them non-stop in the car or on my way to class. So yeah, I’ll try and get more of those out to you loyal readers. Here is a nice start, Mr. Gaspar, who’s remixed everyone from Katy Perry to The Cardigans along with some original material of his own, has yet another remix floating around the interwebs lately. This one mixes up Daft Punk’s classic “Harder Better Faster Stronger” with Boys Noize’s intense electro jam “Lava Lava”. It’s not perfect, and it’s nowhere near what a mashup is possible of doing as far as how it create new and nostalgic feelings all at the same time, but this track is a nice treat for anyone interested in both of the featured artists. It’s a grimmy and rough track in the end, but I love it all the same, what can I say? I’m a sucker for a good mashup. check it out for yourself, enjoy!

Swan Lake get all creep and crawly on their new single

Posted in Audio, Downloads, Music News with tags , , , , , , , , on Monday, February 23, 2009 by Erik Burg

March 24th marks the release of Swan Lakes newest album Enemy Mine (on Jagjaguwar records), but a few tracks have already been released in anticipation of the album. The newest single, entitled “Spider”, is a short romp in line with other Swan Lake material, from this album and their debut effort as well. It’s a hard-to-describe whirlwind of a track that, unless you kind of know what you’re getting yourself into, can be a complete turnoff upon first listen. Like most of their work, “Spider” is a herky-jerky (I’m an amazing writer) track that spills over with vocals and heavy rhythmic drums. The synthesized keys in the background add for a nice twist, especially in the chorus when they wind and swerve with the vocals, complimented by Spencer Krug‘s small vocal part toward the end of the song, “Spider” is a splendid track. Along with the other singles already released, Enemy Mine is shaping up to be an amazing album. Check out the mp3 below along with the album artwork (some of my favorite of 2009 so far).

New Audio: Friendly Fires, “Skeleton Boy” (Air France Remix)

So this was pretty much amazing news for today. Two of my favorite new bands that I discovered in 2008 getting together for the forthcoming Skeleton Boy 12″ due out March 3rd here in the US. Friendly Fires have been hot on the remix trail, with their Aeroplane remix for Skeleton Boy also getting tons of play lately. Which is a great thing, hopefully it’s turning people onto their amazing self-titled debut and the group gains more and more momentum heading into their sophomore release. Lending a hand to “Skeleton Boy” this time is Air France, the outstanding and dreamy Swedish pop duo. Their 2008 release, No Way Down, took a long time to hit the states, but when it finally did it was extremely well received. Filled with massive landscapes and sprawling synths, the vocally sampled album is still on repeat on my iPod.

Don't worry, these boys don't burn

Don't worry, these boys don't burn

The result of this two greats is well… great, of course. Air France completely takes the song over and makes it totally its own. Added are the airy spaces that Air France is so fine at crafting, taken away are the Cut Copy like 80’s new wave bass lines. So yeah, it’s a really fun track, and definitely a great takeover for Air France, holding me over ever slightly until their next album. Enjoy!

New Audio: Swan Lake, “A Hand at Dusk”

Okay so here is the deal, I’m in class right now so I haven’t listened to this yet. BUT, I’m sure it’s amazing, seeing as Swan Lake’s debut album Beast Moans was great and Spencer Krug’s track-record is nearly spotless. March 23rd is the release date for their next album, Enemy Mine. So yeah, check out the track below and enjoy!

New Audio: High Places – “Anyango”

A good start to a friday, if I’ve ever had one. A new High Places track from their upcoming album Thank You Very Quickly was released this morning, delighting listeners of their amazing afro-american infusion music. I’ve been digging tunes like this lately, whether it’s Very Best, El Guincho, or The Ruby Suns, I’ve been loving worldy influenced music. “Anyango” delivers a strong punch, and is a great start to their new album. Funky bass lines and amazing drumming heavily influenced by the African members of the group, “Anyango” is definietly worth checkign out if you haven’t heard anything by High Places yet. Enjoy and happy friday!

New Audio: Spoon – “Well Alright”

This new track comes via the Dark Was the Night compilation, like just about anything leaking out these days. The album compilation drops next Tuesday, Feb. 17th. on 4AD records. Get more info HERE

This cut though, from indie heavyweights Spoon, is a bit of a let down. Sorry guys, but this fast fasted and confusing song doesn’t remind me of anything Spoon has done in the past. At first I wanted to tap-my-toe along to “Well Alright” but eventually I just wanted to turn it off. But I suppose if there is any place to take the band in a different direction, this would be the place to do it. Oh well I guess, everything else I’ve heard from Dark Was The Night has sounded pretty much amazing, so I’ve still got high hopes and anxious nerves running through my veins for this release. Grab the mp3 below and see what you think. Enjoy!

New Audio: Black Lips – “Trapped in a Basement”

Posted in Audio, Downloads, Music News with tags , , , , , , , on Wednesday, February 11, 2009 by Erik Burg

While I’m not, by any means, a huge fan of the Black Lips, usually one or two from each album usually gets my attention enough to put on repeat for a while. Their third album, due to drop the 24th of this month, entitled 200 Million Thousand has been getting some play around the blogosphere as of late. This cut comes courtesy of the great people at I Guess I’m Floating. “Trapped in a Basement” is a bit of a change from their other material, but for me at least, it’s a welcome change. Shifting from the sound that makes me want to smash an empty beer bottle over my friends head, “Trapped” takes it down a notch while still remaining interesting. The lo-fi production remains, the scratchy vocals remain, but along with this track comes the lingering feeling that these guys would have fit in perfectly with the Doors, Yardbirds, and other classic rock groups.

It’s definitely worth a look, and it’s definitely going to put some people off, but in the end I believe it’s a great step forward for the psych-rock-grunge band. Keep your eyes out for this release on the 24th on Vice Records. Enjoy!

NEW AUDIO: Cage – “Nothing Left To Say” (Produced by El-P)

Cage on the left

Cage on the left

So this pretty much made my night, I happened to stop by Pitchfork one more time before I went to bed to see if I missed anything interesting today, and look what I found! A new Cage track, but not just any Cage track, this one is produced by El-P (my favorite hip-hop artist). “Nothing Left to Say” is slow to take flight, the first minute or so is essentially a Cage monologue, ranting about the usual life problems and lessons that he seems to touch on. But then lift off, after that first part the track grabs the listener immediately, blasting off into outer space. The production of El-P stand out on this cut for sure, thanks to the various different parts that contribute to the killer beat. Various loops all come together and bang throughout the entire track, coupled with NYC driven lyrics that are dark and dreary, as though Cage would have it any other way, ha. But yeah this is an absolutely sick track, give it a listen for sure.Hip-hop is alive and well y’all, Enjoy!!!

Mixtape: RP3 Present J Dilla – “Midnight Snack”

Posted in Audio, Downloads, Music Reviews with tags , , , , , , , , , , on Wednesday, February 11, 2009 by Erik Burg

So there seems to be an endless amount of J Dilla material out there, and by “seems to be” I mean, there is. Whether it’s original material leaking out, Dilla mash-ups, Dilla collaborations, or what I’m about to discuss at length, Dilla Mixes.

Mmmmmmm....

Mmmmmmm....

The newest Mix to hit the Dilla enthusiast circuit, Midnight Snack, is a unique blend of jazz influence and smooth hip-hop from Dilla’s long and storied catalogue. Running just over an hour, this mix is the perfect treat for that “midnight snack” that we all crave. It’s mellow and calm, yet it doesn’t bore the listener at all. The entire mix flows so well, mixing in various vocal sample, my favorite being from the lady who adorns your glorious voicemail.

I might be over-matched trying to review this tape, seeing as I’m not the biggest Dilla fan in the world, or even on Mind Inversion. But I think it’s nice to have news about the guy coming from someone who doesn’t absolutely worship him. So yeah, with a level head and an honest conscious I can say without a doubt that any lover of music will enjoy this mix. You don’t have to appreciate Dilla, you don’t have to have a ph. d. in hip-hop, just sit back, turn the lights low, work on some homework maybe, and enjoy this awesome awesome stellar mix of beautiful music from a legend.

WAVVES live at the Market Hotel NYC 2/6/09

Posted in Audio, Downloads, Music News with tags , , , , , , , , , on Wednesday, February 11, 2009 by Erik Burg

wavves-nyctaperSo there is this band called Wavves floating around out there. If you’ve been following music at all lately it’s likely that you’ve ran across his name. But his music you ask, what’s it all about? Ummm…. I don’t have an answer, not at all, I can’t make up my mind on Wavves. Whether I like it, hate it, don’t care about it, etc. I’m leaning towards hating it though, which, though upon first sight may seem like a bad thing, is probably a sign that I’m going to grow and come to love it. Seemingly every band I listen to today I’ve hated at one point or another (animal collective, jens lekman, broken social scene) so maybe this backlash is a good thing. Who knows, but what I DO know is that NYC taper captured another great concert, it’s Wavves obviously, playing some new tracks along with older cuts from his self-titled debut. Set list and more info about Wavves below, Enjoy!

01 Weed Demon
02 California Goth
