After Joe Budden dissed Method Man’s lyrical abilities, Inspectah Deck released a song in retaliation and here at Rock the Bells ’09 in DC, Deck and Raekwon talk about their beef with Joe Budden. Personally, I don’t think this is the way to handle the problem, complaining about him on stage after quesitoning Budden’s “manliness” for not confronting them in person. After the stage performance, Raekwon sits down with undergroundhiphop.com to discuss the beef.

Album Review: J Dilla, Jay Stay Paid
Posted in Music Reviews with tags Black Thought, Donuts, Havoc, J Dilla, Jay Stay Paid, Ma Dukes, Nature Sounds, Pete Rock, Raekwon, The Shining on Thursday, June 4, 2009 by Tim Althaus
J Dilla’s latest ethereally epic release may be one of my favorites that I’ve heard from his catalog. Jay Stay Paid is a hybrid if you will, the vast majority of it plays out like beat tape, but in between are tracks that feature blazingly blistering emcees. Ma Dukes & Pete Rock put a lot of tender love and care into this album, and it really shows through. They both did a great job of arranging the tracks on this album into a graceful and gorgeous mosaic. It sounds so authentic that you would think that Jay produced the album himself. Continue reading
Album Review: Method Man & Redman, Blackout! 2
Posted in Music Reviews with tags Bink, Blackout 2, Bun B, Ghostface, Mathematics, Method Man, Pete Rock, Raekwon, Redman on Saturday, May 30, 2009 by Tim Althaus
The original Blackout! album came out 10 years ago, I picked that shit up when I was 12 years old, and I’ve been playing it ever since. To me Blackout! will always be a classic. Blackout! 2 has Method Man & Redman sticking to the same formula as an incredible two man duo with great production and witty ass rhymes. I am pretty surprised at how mediocre the reviews have been for this album because I personally think it’s an incredible album, and it should hold up as one of the contenders for album of the year. I could pretty much sum up this entire review with one mathematical equation: Method Man + Redman x DOPE beats = one hell of an album. Continue reading
Havoc of Mobb Deep Talks J Dilla
Posted in Media, Video with tags Havoc, J Dilla, Jay $tay Paid, Nature Sounds, Raekwon on Wednesday, May 27, 2009 by Tim AlthausAs many of you know J Dilla’s new album, Jay $tay Paid comes out this Tuesday on Nature Sounds Records. Havoc of Mobb Deep is one of the cats that is rapping over Dilla’s treats on the record. Havoc shows a great deal of respect for Dilla talking about how good he was at flipping samples, “It’s not what you sample, it’s how you sample it”. Havoc also talks about the first time that he heard Dilla (on a Tribe project), the fact that he would put Dilla in his top 10, how he chose the beat he rapped over on Jay $tay Paid & working with Raekwon.
J Dilla X Black Thought = One Hell of a “Reality Check”

I figured I would start off my posts today with a track that is worth hearing on 4/20. This track comes to us from the fine people over at Okayplayer. As I mentioned in a post a while back, Ma Dukes and Pete Rock are going to be putting out an album via Nature sounds on June 2nd entitled Jay Stay Paid. This is the first track that we have the pleasure of hearing, and it features Black Thought, one of the best emcees in the game. As usual you can expect a great beat from one of the all-time greats, and Black Thought rips through this beat like paper, all while making it seem so effortless.
This album sounds like it’s going to the spectacular, according to the article I read at OKP, Jay Stay Paid is going to contain mostly instrumentals (which I am totally okay with) but will feature an all-star cast of emcees. What emcees can you expect to hear on the ablum? Illa J, DOOM, Black Thought, Raekwon, Havoc, Blu & MOP. I don’t need to say a whole lot more about this album other than that if you don’t pick it up on June 2nd you are crazy.

Rock The Bells 2009

Ummm wow. That was my initial reaction when I saw this post at Hip Hop DX. With the initial artist lineup, this looks like (to me) that this is going to be the concert of the year. I know for sure that I am going to be trying like hell to make the Chicago show, because this is something I definitely don’t want to miss. This looks like the most studded Hip-Hop lineup I’ve seen for a show this year, and there are still more to be announced. If you get a chance to get tickets, please do not pass up your chance. Rock The Bells (Guerilla Union) has been putting together some of the finest Hip-Hop shows for the last 5 years and apparently they are looking to follow suit very strongly. To be honest I would probably pay one hundred dollars to see The Roots or Reflection Eternal. That means that even if tickets are one hundred (we don’t know as of yet) that this concert is absolutely killer for price. If you are able to make it to one of these shows, you are going to be catching the best Hip-Hop shows of this year.
Make sure you stay tuned for dates and ticket prices, as well as any updates that have to pertain to this series because we will let you know right away.
Review: DOOM, Born Like This
Posted in Music Reviews, Reviews with tags Born Like This, doom, Ghostface Killah, J Dilla, Jake One, MF Doom, Raekwon, Thom Yorke on Tuesday, April 7, 2009 by Tim Althaus
As if MF Doom (sorry DOOM) had to make it any more confusing, he added yet another moniker to the seemingly endless list of names. Born Like This is his first outing under the alias known as DOOM (yes, it has to be ALL CAPS). It’s always been hard for me to put a term on how I feel about MF Doom’s music, it’s great, but I just don’t know where I sit with it. If there’s one thing for sure, he never fails in making me laugh my ass of. DOOM is one of the funniest and quirkiest emcees I’ve ever heard, I love the way that he rhymes and the things he spits about.
With the information above being said lets start by saying that the production on this album is nothing short of amazing. With the majority of production being handled by DOOM himself (DOOM has always been a great fucking producer), the rest of the production is handled by Jake One, J Dilla & Thom Yorke (only on the iTunes purchase) . By the names already mentioned, you should have a pretty good idea that the beats on this album are going to be pretty close to off the charts. Continue reading
Jadakiss, Ghostface & Reakwon? Get the hell out…
Posted in Downloads, Media with tags Cartel Gathering, Ghostface, Jadakiss, Only Built For Cuban Linx 2, Raekwon, The Last Kiss on Tuesday, March 31, 2009 by Tim Althaus
I started seeing this track everywhere and I had to put something up about it, because it is just that good. I’ve been feeling Jadakiss since his days back in The Lox with Sheek and Styles. His last album, Kiss of Death was a raw ass record and I still bump that shit hard to this day. I don’t even really need to give introductions for Ghostface or Raekwon, so you can imagine just how sick this track is.
The track is called “Cartel Gathering”, and the beat is pretty much ridiculous. All of these emcees showcase their top effort, and Ghost is the first to take off, “Don’t be afraid of the New York Street talk/I switch gear all day bro, like you do in your peach Porsche”. Rae follows suit very nicely, “…That was the 90’s/Chef era take over America/bag Ugly Betty up and make her Ms. Ferrera”. Continue reading
