Stones Throw x Ed Banger = Pure Insanity

Here is some awesome video footage from the recent tour that Stones Throw and Ed Banger have embarked on. Each of the labels brought out some of their new talent and toured the fine continent of Europe. Stones Throw brought James Pants, Mayer Hawthorne, Dam Funk & label owner (as well as bomb ass DJ) Peanut Butter Wolf. Who was repping for Ed Banger you might ask? DJ Mehdi, Busy P (also known as Pedro Winter (Ed Banger Label owner)) & DSL is the answer. If you watch the video, you can tell that every one of these shows looks like a non-stop party. I wish I could say that I was fortunate to be in Europe and see these two labels team up. No dissapointments here. Make sure you have your dancing shoes on because after watching this one you may have the urge to get down.

Northern Outpost Ep. 8, The Nina! The Pinta! perform and get interviewed

Posted in Video with tags , , , , , on Sunday, April 12, 2009 by Ryan Buege

The final episode of the debut season from the local Twin Cities-oriented music TV show Northern Outpost is now online, and for this week’s episode they’re in the Owl Recording Studio in Uptown dishing the dirt with The Nina! The Pinta!, a post-hardcore band that I was fortunate enough to personally see last Wednesday at Fucked Up’s Triple Rock show. Among the other bands that opened for F’d Up’s immense set, The Nina! The Pinta!’s punchy, abrasive, post-hardcore clearly stood out. Contrasted against the other openers lo-fi punk, TNTP’s the sounds muscular set were as catchy and danceable as they were dissonant and pissed off. On this episode of Northern Outpost, we get to hear some of their rock n roll and get introduced to the faces behind the music as they talk about how they fit into the local scene, what kinds of shows they find themselves playing, and the band’s motivation continue to play punk rock in front of the local bar crowds. Watch it all unfold below!

Also, if you haven’t heard, Northern Outpost has planned a first season benefit show featuring some of the band’s they’ve featured which will take place at the Hexagon Bar next Saturday at 9pm.  For this completely FREE show, The Absent Arch, Bouncer Fighter, Andy Elwell, and The Yoleus will play live sets while videos from throughout the season are broadcast on the white screen between sets. And for those of you who can’t get enough of these bands, there’ll be DVDs for purchase available at the show;  please click the flyer for complete info.

The Crinn plan to enter Signature Tone Studios to record Nuclear Blast debut in May

Posted in Video with tags , , , , , , , , , , on Sunday, April 12, 2009 by Ryan Buege

St Paul’s  technical/jazz metal wizards in The Crinn, recent signees to the prestigious international Nuclear Blast metal label, have checked in with a new update from the rehearsal space where they’re working to prepare their forthcoming NB-label debut Dreaming Saturn. As the guys said in a post at their blog, it’s been quite a while since they’ve “posted anything & played anywhere”, but just because we haven’t heard many new songs doesn’t mean The Crinn isn’t hard at work. They’ve finally finished the writing stage and are now ready to move to recording. The guys will move their operation to Signature Tone Studios in Minneapolis on May 15th to begin tracking with Adam Tucker with Zack Ohren at Castle Ultimate in Oakland, CA doing the mixing and Alan Douches at West West Side in New York doing the mastering. While we’re waiting until October 9th (the official release date) to get our hands on the album, the band was kind enough to post several videos from their writing sessions to give us a taste. We’ve posted the most recent one below for your viewing pleasure. Enjoy!

Kanye is a “Gay Fish”

This video is straight up hilarious. Apparently Matt Stone & Trey Parker thought that Kanye would be the best celebrity to go after next. For all of you who didn’t get the chance to see this, here it is folks the full episode. When I watched this I was pretty much crying I was laughing so hard, “Kanye you like to eat fish dicks!”. What did Ye have to say about the episode? “I GOT A LONG ROAD AHEAD OF ME TO MAKE PEOPLE BELIEVE I’M NOT ACTUALLY A HUGE DOUCHE BUT I’M UP FOR CHALLENGE”. All I have to say is good luck Kanye, I think it’s gonna be harder for me than anyone for you to convince.

And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead unveil new music video, “Isis Unveiled”

…And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead are back at it this month with a new music video from their album called The Century of Self (released in February), and while they’ve left the major label behind for this one, they still clearly haven’t forgotten the breathtaking bombast that made their subtle psychedelics so appealing to the majors in the first place. On their new music video for “Isis Unveiled”, the Texas sextet charges through an epic, noisy prog-rocker as Conrad injects his sneering, the rhymthmic vocal delivery over the majestic orchestration. Aided by the simple and straightforward psychedelic imagery that they are known for, the visuals on this video extremely haunting in their delivery, with Conrad’s cold stare delivering some immediate bone-chilling realism. Not a really return to form, this is moreso a restatement that about the great aspects of the Trail of Dead that never really left. The Trail of Dead are clearly sick of being kicked while their down, and now that they’re back standing on their own feet (aka independet label), I doubt they’re going to be letting anyone knock them back over anytime soon. If my music senses are still working correctly, I’d say that this band still has a few classics on their hands…

Concert Review & Video: Wavves and Vampire Hands @ 7th Street Entry

Posted in Concert Reviews, Video with tags , , , , , , , on Monday, April 6, 2009 by Erik Burg

My third concert in as many nights (Friday: Junior Boys, Saturday: Friendly Fires) came down to two bands that I either knew little about, in the case of Vampire Hands, or was slightly pessimistic about after hearing their album, see Wavves. I knew the concert had great potential though, critics have raved about Wavves on and off the record and countless number of acquaintances have told me how great Vampire Hands are live. So hope were yet again high.

After a ridiculous two and a half hour wait for local favorites Vampire Hands to come on, the triumphant and overly (if there is suchwavves-cassette-cover a thing) drunk band played an awesome set of some of their best tracks. “I’m going to jail Mom! Just kidding, my parents are out there tonight” the keyboard/drum/vocal extraordinaire pronounced before the first song. The charismatic front man also had a bit of a malfunction half way through the set, with the legs to his drums falling off, boldly claiming after the song was over that “fuck it, I don’t need them.” A big thanks to everyone who suggested these guys, as their music an antics lived up to any and all hype.

And speaking of hype, has anyone been more highly touted this year than Nathan Williams, otherwise known as Wavves. I’ve been hard pressed to really get into either of his two albums, but his newest effort Wavvves had been growing on me. The San Diego native, and owner of this year’s award for best hair started the set with the awesome “Beach Demon.” One of his more upbeat tracks, the song sprung the crowd off the ground and into the air as Nathan and his buddy on drums rolled through some of the best California garage pop has to offer. He had to tease though, “So we’re gonna play a song that we have never played live” Williams says, only to turn around to find the drummer shaking his head in disapproval. So it never happened, but hey, everything they played I loved. Everything this night promised, delivered. If this guy is playing any festivals this summer or a date in your area be sure to check it out. Enjoy the video and photos as much as I enjoyed the show!

The Soul Brother #1 Talks Influences

Posted in Media, Video with tags , , on Thursday, April 2, 2009 by Tim Althaus

peterock21 Pete Rock is the guy you look to constantly for the most consistent and great Hip-Hop you will hear. There’s no denying that Pete Rock is one of the greatest producers of all time. There is a whole lot of emcees and producers that will make the same statement. I haven’t heard much about Pete since his album NY’s Finest dropped last year, so it’s a breath of fresh air to see this video over at Crate Kings.

In this video Pete Rock talks about his major influences as far as the game was concerned when he was coming up back in the day, as well as who he looks to now as being the best in the game. Pete gives a huge shout out to J Dilla saying that if Dilla was still around he would still be the greatest to have made the beats (I feel the same way). It’s great to hear what the thoughts are from the mind of a genius, make sure you check out the video to learn some lessons from one of the greatest in Hip-Hop.

The Foreign Exchange in Miami Parts 1&2

Posted in Media, Video with tags , , on Thursday, April 2, 2009 by Tim Althaus

I found these videos over at Nicolay Music the other day when I was browsing the site. Let me tell you that Phonte is one of the funniest motherfuckers I’ve ever seen on video. In the first video he talks about what the fans have enabled Foreign Exchange to do, and makes an allusion to slavery. In the second video he talks about how sometimes, you just have to forget everything else and reflect. I love how Te informs you but adds a humorous twist to it. Follow me after the jump to watch part 2. Continue reading

Atmosphere Brings You To “Your Glasshouse”

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Here is the new video for the song “Your Glasshouse” off of Atmosphere’s latest effort When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That Shit Gold. I am happy to see that Slug & Ant are keeping the campaign going for the album that came out last year. This video has great cinematography and has an interesting theme to it (as most of the Atmosphere videos have as of late). Make sure you check out the video, and if you haven’t go out and cop When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That Shit Gold.

Evidence goes to the far left once again

Posted in Downloads, Media, Video with tags , , , on Wednesday, April 1, 2009 by Tim Althaus

ev-2 Here we are with another straight fire laced track by Evidence featuring Fashawn and Alchemist. As you may recall, both of these two emcees complimented Evdience on the original “Far Left“, and “The Far Left 2” is no different. I have to say that out of the three emcees on this track (with no disrespect to any of them) Fashawn steps up his game the most. Fashawn is one of those cats that you are going to be hearing me talk about quite a bit (especially when Boy Wonder drops) in the future.

All of these cats have new projects coming out this year so make sure you watch out for those because every single one of these albums is going to be top fucking quality. “The Far Left” is taking over Hip-Hop this year it seems.

You can download the track here.
