Terrorizer posts new 2009 demo track online

Jesse Pintado may have passed on a few years ago (R.I.P.), but that doesn’t mean that the genre-defining grind lords of Terrorizer have been stopped in their tracks. The band just posted their first recording since Jesse died in 2006 from liver failure, and it’s obvious that they are not softening up due to age or sadness. This release may be a little bit too soon for those still mourning Jesse, but I for one think its fantastic return and an appropriate continuation of the legendary groundwork begun by Pintado. One word: KILLER!

Album Review: Power of 2, Power of 2

Posted in Music Reviews with tags , , , , , , , , , on Thursday, June 4, 2009 by Ryan Buege

From my point of view, there are only two reasons why any instrumental rock band would choose to remain vox-less these days: 1) they are Power of 2frightened that vocals would destroy the aesthetic they’ve developed, or 2) they don’t have time for a fucking vocalist! ¶ Power of 2, a Minneapolis based prog-rock band featuring Max Becker on drums and Joe Clark on guitar, clearly falls into the latter school, as evidenced by the new self-titled album of driving, explosive, ball-bustin’ rock ‘n’ roller coaster rides they’ve nailed down for release on Friday.  It’s a guitar centric album (vocals finally make an extremely brief appearance on the final track, “Eight Chupacabras”)  that simply has no room for a third wheel to disrupt the charging energy that pulses between the two, one jperson seemingly acting as a anode and the other as a cathode . Album Review: J Dilla, Jay Stay Paid

Posted in Music Reviews with tags , , , , , , , , , on Thursday, June 4, 2009 by Tim Althaus

Jay Stay PAid J Dilla’s latest ethereally epic release may be one of my favorites that I’ve heard from his catalog. Jay Stay Paid is a hybrid if you will, the vast majority of it plays out like beat tape, but in between are tracks that feature blazingly blistering emcees. Ma Dukes & Pete Rock put a lot of tender love and care into this album, and it really shows through. They both did a great job of arranging the tracks on this album into a graceful and gorgeous mosaic. It sounds so authentic that you would think that Jay produced the album himself. Continue reading

URB Magazine Features James Murphy In The Studio

Posted in Media, Video with tags , , on Thursday, June 4, 2009 by Tim Althaus

James Murphy was gracious enough to give URB an inside look during a recent LCD Sondsystem studio session. It’s only a brief 40 second clip, but as you can see James Murphy feels right at home with his synthesizers. Erik, I know you are feeling this one. In my opinion, James Murphy is pretty much a god among men.

*Note his badass word “moogmerized”

MosDef Here is a top quality track off of Mos’s new album The Ecstatic which will be dropping this coming Tuesday. The track features Talib Kweli (the other half of Black Star) and is produced by the legendary J Dilla. As many of you know, Mos & Kweli on the same track usually makes for some pure magic.

I don’t know about you readers out there, but I am definitely going to be at the store on Tuesday picking this gem up. Mos is due for another classic album, considering Tru3 Magic was an epic fail. Follow me after the jump for the track download. Continue reading

The Brothers Thornton are Down With Vimby

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Your favorite duo of brothers, Malice & Pusha (otherwise known as Clipse) sat down and talked to Vimby during their show at Webster Hall in New York. This is making me fiend for these guys album like the hard tan that they used to bake in the kitchen. According to the video interview, the new album is going to sound a lot like Lord Willin’ which is a great thing to me, because I think it was better than Hell Hath No Fury. It sounds like we are in store for a great album from the Thornton Brothers here real soon, stay posted for more news.

Wild Style Wednesday Review: Rjd2, The Horror EP

Posted in Wildstyle Wednesdays with tags , , , , , , on Wednesday, June 3, 2009 by Tim Althaus

RJ horror Rjd2 is one badass dude, he released Deadringer in 2002 (one of my favorite albums of all time), and roughly one year later he released this ten track gem otherwise known as The Horror EP. Don’t get me wrong, Deadringer is a multi-level musical masterpiece but I think The Horror EP is a little better. This EP has ten top tier tracks, revisits some of the best moments of Deadringer and further more, it features some of Rj’s best beats. I feel as though if this was the only material that you owned by Rjd2, you would still be listening to his best music. Continue reading
