The Cool Kids release two new tracks in anticipation of new mixtape

Posted in Audio, Downloads, Music News with tags , , , , , , , on Friday, May 1, 2009 by Erik Burg

The indie friendly hip-hop stars Mikey Rocks and Chuck Inglish have been busy since their stellar Bake Sale EP release in 2008. With the release of the That’s Stupid Mixtape the same year in conjunction with a tour, and now they’re working on their second studio album When Fish Ride Bicycles slated for release later this year. But they’ve got another project ready to drop this week. The Gone Fishing Mixtape will be released Monday May 4th on Cake Recordings.

The tape was produced and performed along side their long time friend Don Cannon, and the two singles that they leaked today display some of their best work to date. “Champions” shows some of the Cool Kids most interesting production to date, adding tons of fuzzed out and over the top bass lines to the usual snare kicks that they’ve perfected by now. I absolutely love this track, the way that the chorus bangs is absolutely unreal. Maybe it’s not quite as smooth as some of their other material and a little bit more of what some people would call “mainstream” but it’s still awesome. The other single, “Popcorn” is a lot more in line with their other material. Some really good samples and some really smooth vocals. It’s always a good mix for Mikey and Chuck.

Shouts to the homie Shake over at 2DopeBoyz. This track is absolutely killer, and I hope it gets you guys as excited for Blackout 2 as me. The beat on this track is super dirty and Method Man & Redman completely kill it like Ted Bundy. Make sure you check out this bomb ass track and cop Blackout 2 when it comes out.

Sunday Metal Song: Pestilence, “Devouring Frenzy”

Pestilence is back in action (kind of) with a new video for “Devouring Frenzy” from the band’s newest album, Resurrection Macabre – their first album since Spheres was released in 1993. Death metal fans will be happy to know that even 15 years out of the game the band hasn’t lost any fire; in fact, “Devouring Frenzy” indicates the dudes are only getting more vicious with age and new recording advances. Still as technically progressive as I remembered them, “Devouring Frenzy” has extra muscle where it matters. This is sure to be just one of many great many brutal death metal releases this year (Nile, Behemoth – I’m looking at you) and this Sunday Metal Minute acknowledgment is my effort to ensure that this one doesn’t get overlooked by young ones..

Reflection Eternal rocks Skidmore College (and cancels U of M show)

I was really upset when I found out about Reflection performing at the University of Minnesota way to late (Ryan: which, unfortunately for EVERYONE in MN, he ended up cancelling late last night anyway. No word whether it will be rescheduled, but considering it was planned exclusively for the U’s Spring Jam festivities, it’s doubtful). These guys put on one hell of a show, as you can clearly see from the video. The sound quality isn’t the absolute greatest, but you can tell that the show is sick as hell. Kweli tears it up as he rolls through the set, make sure you check this one out. Kwe performs his verse on Kanye’s “Get em’ High”, The new Reflection track “Back Again” and Kweli’s always classic “Get By”.

The Bronx shred in (cyber?) shark-infested waters on “Knifeman” music video

Posted in Video with tags , , , , , on Thursday, April 23, 2009 by Ryan Buege

The Bronx recently passed through the Twin Cities with Trash Talk for a Triple Rock gig to support their new album The Bronx (III), so it’s presumable that we won’t be able to see them here in person in Minnesota for a while. Thankfully, the best hard-rock album of 2008 is getting some more video accompaniments to be broadcast around the globe, with Justin Enright and Tyler Ford directing a video for the band’s infectious groovy hardcore boot-stomper “Knifeman”. What seems to be a casual under-water shred-fest quickly turns into a bloodbath as the rockers struggle to outswim the agile (cyber?) shark that somehow infiltrated their pool…  Enter the pool with these punks, if you dare to tempt the virtual spawn of Jaws.

Of Montreal debut two new songs, continue covers rampage

Posted in Audio, Music News, Video with tags , , , , , , on Thursday, April 23, 2009 by Erik Burg

kevin-barnes Of Montreal continue their romp through the world of covers. Though my favorite to this point is either “Day Man” from It’s Always Sunny or “Melody Day” by Caribou, this cut of The Beatles White Album classic “I’m So Tired” is pretty great.

Check out their entire cover archive at You Ain’t No Picasso

Performed in-studio for 90.7 WFUV, Kevin Barnes and friends strip the song down just a little bit but build to an ending that’s just as sentimental as the original song. I’ve been a huge fan of nearly all OM’s acoustic studio tracks in this nature (including the awesome tracks they did for The Current here in Minneapolis). Barnes’ unique voice and styling has a way of shining even more than on record in this format which is pleasing to note, along with his awesome scarf-glasses combo which he probably has patented by now.

And if you missed it earlier in the week, Of Montreal played a few new tracks at the Music Hall of Williamsburg as well. It’s live, so yeah the audio isn’t perfect, but what is for certain is that OM hasn’t missed a beat since Skeletal Lamping. The tracks are little bit more rock-ish than anything they’ve done to this point, but it all seems a natural progression if you listen to their last two or three albums. They can do no wrong for me, especially after seeing them on their off-the-wall tour this fall. Enjoy!

Of Montreal – “Like a Tourist”

My favorite alt. rockers are back with some new noise, and I’m happy to report that it sounds very much like the Sonic Youth I love! “Sacred Trickster” is the first song to see a release from their latest album The Eternal, their follow-up to Rather Ripped, which hits stores on June 9th via Matador.. Tune in..

The Sunday Show, Episode 4 “The Ski Episode”

Posted in Media, The Sunday Show with tags , , on Wednesday, April 22, 2009 by Tim Althaus

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Here is the 4th episode of “your favorite show about nothing in particular”, The Sunday Show. The topic in this episode is skiing (note the beautiful Mind Inversion banner in the beginning of the episode). They also talk a little bit about snowboarding, but all three guys predominantly ski so that is the bulk of discussion. Another thing that I didn’t mention that I love about this show, is that they talk about what beers they are drinking on every episode. I am the type of guy that loves to try new brews, and this is a perfect place for suggestions. They discuss their ski trip up north, and some of their favorite places to ski in North America. Make sure you check out this episode and go over to sundayshow.tumblr.com to check out all the previous episodes and the latest news.

Cause We’re All Human After All

Talk about a rare opportunity to see a band live. Here is an awesome (and truly beyond rare) video of Thomas Bangalter of Daft Punk playing a nearly 30 minute Dj set in France in 2005.

Awesome would be an understatement. The man spins not only his own material but a plethora of different club bangers as well (Prodigy?!). It’s a must see for any fan of Daft Punk or for any fan of electronic music. I’ll stop talking so you can go watch.
